Background/History:
Denton and Aubrey were vacationing in Chile. Due to her pregnancy, Aubrey could
not accompany Denton on their scheduled mountain climbing excursion. During the
climb, there was a horrible avalanche and the entire party fell to their deaths,
except Denton. He was discovered by Dr. Schmidt’s robots and taken to his
secret laboratory hidden deep inside the Chilean mountain. Schmidt had been
kidnapping hapless victims and stealing their brains to put in his robots. He
had invented a device that enabled him to control their minds creating robots
with an ability to think and react, rather just do programmed functions. He
removed Denton’s brain from his shattered and dying body, placing it into his
latest robot prototype. Schmidt returned the corpse to the accident site and no
one suspected a thing. Aubrey returned to the US mourning her husband. Pleased
with his success, he waited over a year until the retirement ceremony of his
hated foe, All American, to reveal his newest weapons of destruction. In
attendance with All American were The Circle of Justice and the Justice
Avengers, so Schmidt brought an army of his ‘Destructoids’ and he was in his
giant robot battle tank with the intention of wiping out all the heroes at once.
When Scribble phased through the giant battle tank to get to Schmidt, he
disabled the mind control device and the ‘Destructoids’ were freed from his
control. While the other robots were panicking, Denton came to his senses and
remembered that the reason they were called ‘Destructoids’ was that if
Schmidt were beaten, as a fail-safe, the robots would explode. Denton quickly
removed the explosive packs from himself and the rest of the robots and flew
high in the air, flinging the bombs away to explode harmlessly. As a result of
the damage to Schmidt’s control unit, a surge of energy arced through the
remaining ‘Destructoids’, literally frying their brains. Denton who had
flown high enough to be out of the unit’s range was the only survivor. Having
seen Denton take off with the bombs, the heroes gave him the chance to explain
himself and suggested that he contact Dr. Solomon to see if there was anything
that could be done for him. Solomon modified the robot shell, so that mind
control would not work on him again. Denton went to his wife and daughter to
explain what had happened. All sides realized that there could be no hope of a
normal family life, but they still kept in touch. Becoming a hero full time
using his codename, Destructoid, he eventually joined the Attack Legion and was
content into the 1980s. After nearly 25 years, Denton was becoming less pleased
with being trapped in the metal shell. The Attack Legion was asked to
investigate a strange gem that had fallen to Earth. The man who had been first
on the scene, oddly enough, wore an actual coonskin cap. He had picked up the
green glowing gem with it and the police transported it that way, promising to
return the cap. The next morning, there was a raccoon in the property room with
the gem and the authorities called the Attack Legion. Unsure of the effect of
the gem on humans, Destructoid brought it back to their headquarters to study.
If the gem caused a raccoon skin to regenerate back to a living creature, could
it have the same effect on the living tissue of his brain and grow him a new
body? Secretly, he opened the case which held his brain in life giving fluids
and placed the gem inside. The next morning, a young Denton Moore with a green
gem in his forehead greeted the team. That night, Destructoid woke up, still in
his shell, thinking the attempt had been a failure. After sorting out the
bizarre situation, the young Denton body had been inhabited by the soul of Kirk
Lynch, who had died nearly simultaneously with the creation of the new body.
Denton was still Destructoid. There was some serious friction toward Lynch, who
used the codename, New Man, as he mastered the abilities of the gem by Denton
who resented his existence. Eventually, New Man successfully used his gem to
clone a new body around Denton’s brain, aged it to his proper chronological
age, and they figured out a way to allow Denton’s astral form to control the
Destructoid body. So, Denton was able to have a normal life with his family and
continue being Destructoid.
Personality/Motivations:
Basically a nice guy before his accident, seeing the evil of Schmidt gave him
the impetus to turn his anger at being a robot into being a force for good. It
served as a sort of therapy for missing the life he should have led with his
wife and family. After over 20 years, he became somewhat bitter, but New Man
creating a new body for him gave him peace of mind as he could have the life he
had longed for and still continue fighting for good.
