Background/History:
He was born in San Diego, a mutant with shapeshifting abilities. They manifested
in a theatre when he and a friend were watching a special screening of the
original Lon Chaney ‘Phantom of the Opera’. After the umasking scene, he
turned to his friend who screamed and ran from him because Steve looked exactly
like the Phantom. No one took his friend seriously, so he was able to keep it
secret. He practiced with his power in private, telling no one. He left home at
sixteen to deal with his teenage angst, depending on his powers to get by. He
traveled east to New York and decided to use his abilities as a private
investigator, but his heart was not in tracking deadbeats or cheating spouses.
Seeing Soundwave and Speed inspired him to become a super-hero and he joined
them when they formed the Protectors. He was a happy-go-lucky, secondary member
of the team and was content for awhile. He became infatuated with Energy Woman,
who was involved with Archer, and that led to Mask becoming less tolerent of
Archer’s swashbuckling manner and Speed’s irreverent attitude. He decided he
had outgrown the Protectors and moved back to California to join the Freedom
Brigade replacing Archer who moved back to New York after marrying Energy Woman.
The move to California worked out very well as he used his powers to become a
successful stuntman in Hollywood. He reconciled with his parents, letting them
in on the secret of his identity.
Personality/Motivation:
After his somewhat extended adolescence and not being able to quite fit in with
the Protectors, he has matured nicely with the Freedom Brigade and found his
place in the world in California.
