“A.J., I have something to tell you,” Victoria whispered in his ear as they were dancing in the circle of people, showing of their moves. He kissed her cheek, “Anything.” “I'm pregnant,” she murmured, smiling against his ear. “What?” He said shrilly, “How the hell did that happen?” “Well I would think you know how it happened!” She stepped away from him, as more people started to look at them. “Baby, don't cause a scene,” he tried to grasp her shoulders and look into her eyes, but she pushed his arms away, “No! I'll cause a fucking scene if I want to! You're the one who freaked out, you asshole!” “Well what do you expect me to do? Jump for joy? I don't want a kid! I told you this already!” “Then you don't have to have one,” she turned and ran out of the club. Beth was sitting at the bar with Nick, just talking, but when the yelling had started they had both watched intently. It angered Beth that anyone would think that it was okay to treat people like that. Maybe it wasn't her place to say anything, but she did any way. She walked right up to him and said, “Where the hell do you get off yelling at her? She just told you something that was very hard for her to say. It has to be even more difficult for her now, knowing that a child that you made together is growing in her belly, unwanted by you. I've never met someone as pig-headed and insensitive as you are,” she slapped him hard across the face, “I hope you're happy, asswipe.” She walked out of the bar with her head high, proud that she had stood up for Victoria. Maybe this trip was going to be good for her. “Hey Beth, wait up!” She heard a voice behind her. She turned around with a smile on her face, seeing Nick, “Hi.” “That was the most awesome thing I think I've ever seen. Where'd you get the guts?” He took her hands in his. “I don't know. She had barely known this man for a month. Let's just stay where we are and let everything work itself out, okay?” She followed him to the door. He opened it, and she stood on tiptoes to kiss his chin lightly, “Thank you, I'm very flattered. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?” “Okay. He had been thinking about Toy, and about the baby inside her, his baby. He was going to have a baby. She was going to get beautifully round and constantly ask him if she looked fat, and he was going to feel the baby kicking in her stomach. Pregnant. Music in his ears. He knocked on Toy's door, then waited for her answer. “Who is it?” Jen's voice asked. “Aj, can I talk to Toy?” “Go away Aj, she doesn't want to talk to you.” “Come on Victoria, I'm sorry; you know I'm sorry.” “Go away, asshole, I hate you,” her tear-filled voice came through the door. “Baby, don't say that.” The door swung open and Jen met him with sympathetic eyes, “It would be best if you just left. Maybe tomorrow, okay?” He nodded and she shut the door. At that moment the realization came to him that he had nowhere to sleep. Toy and him had been sharing a room. He decided that he would just room with one of the guys that night.
