“Listen, I just wanted to let you know that I felt really bad about
saying what I did last night, Somer. I know it must have put a lot of
pressure on you to do the right thing, and I'm sorry that I had to be the one
doing that...”
“Listen, Kev, I understand, but I can't really talk right now, okay?”
She ran out on stage.
“Okay,” he answered, though no one heard him. He spent the half hour of
her concert just watching her, knowing that what he had said the night before
was true, but still not knowing if it had
been the right thing to do. It was tough for him to decide whether to tell
her he was just joking or to tell her that he was being completely honest and
hoped that someday she would feel the same way.
After her show he tried to avoid her; he didn't want her thinking he was
some kind of crazy person or stalker. Aj tried to grab Toy as she walked by,
but she wouldn't let him touch her. She was still really upset, but he knew
what she found in the dressing room would make her feel much better.
She walked in and saw a package sitting on the dresser, wrapped in white
paper faintly patterned with pink hearts and baby rattles, “Aj, what did you
do?” She smiled to herself.wing that he had done the right thing.
Somer...” He said quietly, studying her face. Something passed between
them that neither understood, but Somer felt her spine tingle in awareness of
his proximity. Without coherent thought she stood on tiptoes and pressed her
lips solidly to his. He pulled her body flush against his, never wanting the
moment to end.
“Whoa!” Toy and Aj pronounced as Kevin parted her lips with his tongue.
Somer broke it with a huge smile on her face, leading him into her
dressing room, not thinking about any of the people watching them.

“Beth, will you talk to me?” Nick appeared at the door to her hotel room.
“What do you want to talk about?”
“I think you know,” he stepped closer to her.
“What's there to talk about, Nick? We had sex, that's all,” she turned
her back to him, starting to close the door in his face.
“No, it's not, Beth. We shared something so amazing that I don't think
I could ever share with anyone else.”
“That's all very nice to say, Nick. Really, it is, but I just can't
talk right now, okay?” She shut the door in his face.
“Goddammit,” he said to himself, running a hand through his hair,
“Beth!” He started to pound on the door.

“Should we do this?” Kevin asked, breaking a kiss breathless.
“Positive,” she started to pull his shirt off.
“Wait a minute,” he held her hands in his, “I really wanna do this,
Somer. Really I do,” he placed a light kiss to her fingertip, “But I don't
think you're ready.”
“Oh, I'm ready,” she smiled, circling his neck with her arms.
“No, you're not,” he shook his head, unwrapping her arms and holding her
hands in his again, “When and if this happens between us I want it to be the
most phenomenal experience of your life, not something you'll regret in the
morning.”
“It won't be, Kevin, really.”
“Can you say you love me?”
“I love you,” she said nonchalantly, putting her hands up as if
surrendering.
“Can you mean it?”
She looked deep into his eyes and knew she couldn't say the words and
mean them, no matter how desperately she wanted to.
She turned her face and let go of his hands.
He tried to touch her face but she turned it away. He took that as a
hint to leave, and stood up. Before he opened the door he turned and looked
at her, “I'll wait, Somer. As long as it takes you.”
She didn't respond, and he left the room.
Aj spun her and she came right back. He put his hand on the back of her
neck, pulling her head to his, “Kiss me.”
She did as he asked, twining her arms around his neck, “I love you,
Daddy,” she whispered.
“I love you too,” he pulled her closer as a slow song started. As he
heard the words he softly started to sing in her ear, “Bright Lights Fancy
Restaurants Everything in this world that a man could want I gotta bank
account bigger than the law should allow Still I'm lonely now Pretty faces
from the covers of the magazines From their covers to my covers want to lay
wit me Fame and fortune still can't find Just a grown man runnin' outta time
Although it seems I have everything I don't wanna be a lonely fool All of the
women, all the expensive cars, all of the money don't amount to you So I can
make believe I have everything, but I cant pretend that I don't see That
without you girl, my life is incomplete...”
She smiled, feeling tears of joy slide down her cheeks. She heard him
clear his throat, then he quietly said, “I want to make you an honest woman,
Victoria Ganzales. I want to be there when my baby is born, and I want to be
able to say, `This is my wife, Toy,' so,” he got down on one knee in front
of her, “Will you marry me?”
