Special End Area Inspection

Due to the mechanical limitations of equipment and the distortion of Magnetic Fields at the ends of Pipes , It is nearly impossible to inspect by automated techniques these critical areas. This is normally done by a process called as Special End Area Inspection (SEA).

Special End Area Inspection covers upto eighteen inches at each end of pipe and is normally inspected prior to threading or after threading but before couplings are bucked-on.

This inspection is done in a bi-directional method in which initially a magnetic field is applied to the end in a Longitudinal direction. This is to detect for Transverse imperfections. The second stage is carried out by application of a Circular Magnetic Field. This is used to detect Longitudinal Imperfections.

The circular magnetic field is applied with a central conductor placed in the pipe capable of shooting a current of 10,000 Amps at 75 volts. This would then magnetize the pipe in a circular direction. The intensity of the field is measured with a 'Castrol Strip'.

The Longitudinal Magnetic field is applied with a DC Coil with a fixed number of turns and currents as high as 30 Amps.

The actual inspection is carried out by the Wet Magnetic Particle Inspection Method in which a Fluorescent Magnetic Particle in a liquid substrate is sprayed over the magnetized pipe ends. This is then inspected with a Ultra-violet Lamp to check for remenence of the particle in the imperfection.

The inspection process is highly subjective and is dependent upon the skill of the inspector and the specifications of the equipment.
