TIMELINE

Often our past dictates our present actions to achieve the future that we want to attain. As a result, we welcome you to discover the history of Asian Pacific Americans.
  • In 1940, Bruce Lee was born. This Asian American actor had the charisma, skills, passion and talent to have been a superstar for many years before he died.

  • In 1990, a Laotian man (with 2 White women) is attacked by two White suspects.

  • In 1943, Madame Chiang Kai-shek's speech at the Hollywood Bowl motivates Congress to repeal the Chinese Exclusion laws. This opened the doors for Chinese immigrants to finally have the ability to legally become citizens, own property, have families, etc. Despite the battles won, the struggle is far from over.

  • In 1990, a Laotian man (with 2 White women) is attacked by two White suspects.

  • In 1862, six Chinese district associations in San Francisco form a loose federation to impose a police tax of $2.50 a month on every Chinese.

  • In 1903, the Korean Methodist Mission Church was the first Korean church planted outside of Korea. Today, the congregation is made of Korean Americans - along with people from the Japanese, White, Filipino, Vietnamese, Black, Arabic, Hawaiian and other nationalities that reside in Hawaii.

  • In 1902, the Chinese Exclusion act was extended another ten years.

  • In 1903, the first group of Korean workers arrived in Hawaii. They also formed the Korean Evangelical Society.

  • On August 30, 1973, Lisa Ling, from ABC's "The View" is born.

  • 15 Japanese American baseball players from the WWII days were honored at Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1998.

  • In 1892, the Geary Law, renews the exclusion of Chinese laborers for an additional 10 years.

  • Spain ceded the Philippines to the U.S. in 1898, as the result of the Treat of Paris that ended the Spanish-Ameircan War. The outcome of the war was not accepted by the citizens of the Philippines that saw great attrocities committed by the US soldiers.

  • In 1923, Francisco Guilledo, a Filipino American boxer, became the World Flyweight Champion.

  • In 1943, the Supreme Court ruled that the curfew law imposed on Japanese Americans during WWII was constitutional.
