DECEMBER 2003 NEWS
It
is our heartfelt hope that your holiday season has been
filled with joy and good cheer for you and loved ones
during these tumultous times. It is, however, during difficult
times where one must count and treasure the blessings
that one has in one's life.
As
2003 ends, we would like to highlight some of the past
entertainment pioneers that have often been unfortunately
forgotten by the American and Asian American communities.
FEATURED
ARTISTS & LEADERS
ANNA
MAY WONG
Her
complexion was described as "aa rose blushing through old
ivory;" she was beautiful, tall (5'7"), slender, and Chinese-American.
The last fact kept her from attaining the highest echelon
among Hollywood's pantheon of stars, but it did not affect
her popularity, nor keep her from becoming a household name.
She was Anna May Wong,
nee Wong Liu Tsong, a name which translates to "Frosted
Yellow Willows," and she was born, appropriately enough,
on Flower Street in Los Angeles' Chinatown on 3 January
1905, above her father's laundry.
DALIP
SAUND
Congressman Dalip Singh Saund as the first among Asian
Americans and also the first
Indian American to be elected to the US Congress.
Thus
far, he is the only Indian American who has been elected
to this honorable position.
He
was first elected in 1956 from 29th congressional district
comprising of Riverside and Imperial Counties of California
and was re-elected twice.
He
did set a precedent for many Asians
to follow in the U.S. Congress. He remains a beacon
of hope and an example for many Indian Americans to
succeed him.
BRUCE
LEE
The
man, the myth and the legend? It is an incontestable
fact that Bruce Lee was a great martial artist. His
on and off screen persona oozed with charismatic flair
making him one of the most popular action hero's of
his time. In death, his popularity seemed only to grow
as legends.
Bruce
had goals and ambitions that drove him to levels of
physical agility, strength and flexibility that none
have been able to compare to as of yet.
