Notes:

May have served in American Revolutionary War

Author of Old Gammon Families (Rev. Gammon) - feels that the name Richard started in England - That a Gammon or Gammond served with Richard I (Richard the Lion Heart) and this Gammon may have been John or George named one of his sons after Richard I - This has not been proven.   Reliable official records of Botetourt County VA has the record that Richard Gammon married Sarah Gamble 11/23/1781. There appears to be reliable statements that Col. David Looney befriended Richard in helpful ways in his first in America. It is likely George Gammon a brother may have come with Richard but returned to England.  After moving to Sullivan County TN, This Richard became a Chief Leader in government reform. Richard took part in a conference at Knoxville, TN which formed an improved government for the state of TN after the state of Franklin. He helped to select the site of the 1st court house of Sullivan County.   Richard with the families of Anderson, Fains, Maxwells and Rheas established the 1st educational institutions in Sullivan County. He was a successful merchant store in his home town and a chain of stores in other towns. He also had a large farm on the Holston river named "Egypt's Plantation", and he was a member of the State Legislature. It is believed he served in the American Revolutionary War.  Richard it appears was related to Rev. Hannibal Gammon who was Mayor of London, England about 1651. Hannibal was a member of Westminster Assembly
