The New Tale SpinsVolume V-IIJuly 2001 |
For those who are not aware, NAS Fallon, Nevada, Van Voorhis Field, is named for Bruce A Van Voorhis, Commanding officer of VB-102, Medal of Honor recipient and a native of Nevada. It is now the home of “Fightertown USA” and the Top Gun school.
Our other Medal of Honor
recipient, John Finn, was honored with an invitation to attend the
premier of the movie “Pearl Harbor” aboard the John C Stennis CVN. The
Stennis cruised to Hawaii for the grand premier of the movie. John is the oldest
surviving Medal of Honor winner. John has been featured in several books and
periodicals.
The following messages were
found in our Guest Book on the VPB-102 Website.
“My Father, Nelson
E Harris was attached to VP-14 Squadron in Kaneohe Bay during the attack on
Pearl Harbor. I am trying to get some information about any of his squadron
mates who are with the VP14/102 Assn. Dad is in very poor health and I would
like to help him contact some of his buddies from so long ago.”
Edward (Ted) Harris: E-Mail enh@bellsouth.net
ALSO: Bob Kirk received a
message from son Ted, saying that hearing from any of his VP-14 Squadron mates
very soon would be the best medicine Nelson
could have. I he is in the late stages of the cancer he has been fighting
for many years. Anyone who knew him - a note or quick call would be really
appreciated. Phone & Address are in the mailed copy you received.
Another message was: “My Bop was in the Futrell crew and I
want him to know (if he reads the guest book) that I love him lots and I am very
very proud! Submitted by Kathleen Egan E-Mail: egan965@earthlink.net
We truly appreciate the
heartfelt messages that are left in our guest book. They are great tributes to
the love of family, the concern for loved ones who gave much to save our
freedoms. It would really mean a lot to these families and the Veterans
themselves, if you would let them know what you may possibly know about their
loved ones. The very sad fact is that we don’t realize what we are losing
until it is almost too late and then we reach out to find it. Please take a
minute to help if you can.
More news from our friends:
Harold
(Hair) Warnimont sent a message, to Bob Kirk, that Phyllis has been in
National Jewish Hospital Research Center, Denver, CO (Room 235, Bed A, 1400
Jackson, Denver, CO 80206) because of serious lung problems. Doctors there are
trying to identify two “bugs” and have not been successful as of this
writing. She would love to hear from her friends via cards and letters.
Betsy Marshall would like to say thank you to all who sent cards and
letters during Ted's illness. Through all the years and the painful struggles
after Ted’s near fatal accident, Ted and Betsy missed only “1” reunion. We
all wish her well.
