The New Tale SpinsVolume VI-IIFebruary 2002 |
Boston 2 in
2002 is upon us. Can you believe it! Great
news! Prices for several
events have been lowered. Be sure to note carefully when reading the
details and sign-up sheet. We
have planned, what we hope will be a relaxed, leisurely, stress free few days
together with friends who have become a large family. There are
activities, meals together and plenty of free time – time to spend
reminiscing, in a beautiful hotel with wonderful public areas, private
corners, places to relax alone or congregate with friends, a very large
"ready room" for our use exclusively and the rates are
incredible...... The
Westin/Waltham is easy to get to, just off Rte 95 in Waltham – no Boston
city driving. – accessible to shopping or the subway to Boston. A quiet,
pleasant restaurant in the hotel for meals. There are other facilities
in the area, within walking distance. A shopping mall is just up the
road (taxi). Eastern
Massachusetts is an area with no end of historic and scenic vistas – a place
you never get tired of – so much to see and take part in. For
further details, see the enclosed description of our events and the Sign-up
Sheet you must return by May 1, 2002..........
Now, on to news of our members and doings: For those of you who knew Carl Hermes (ground personnel) who was a Radar
Technician for VPB102, word has come from his daughter, Barbara Hermes
Hannegan, that he has died. Typical of the correspondence we are
receiving more and more often, he never talked about his experiences and
brushed aside any interest on the part of his family. Now, they are
searching, wanting to know more about who he was. Don't wait – give
them the history they crave. WWII was the greatest single event of our
history until 9-11. You were a part of it. They want to know. Walter Ficek Marshall has a new address – 1010 American Eagle Blvd, Sun City
Center, FL 33573. He has moved to the Freedom
Plaza retirement center. Copies of all of your memories, which you have sent to me over the years, have
been sent to Stephen Ambrose, the famous historian. He is writing a new
book about the men who served in the Pacific in WWII. Office of Stephen Ambrose, PO Box 1713, Helena, MT 59624 "And" to me, Louise Thoman, 86 Driftwood Lane, Trumbull, CT 06611. My copy will be added to the Squadron Memories books that are a part of the history of your Squadron. If you have tapes. Send them along too. He and I are looking for ANY memories, good, bad, combat, just plain daily life – memories that will be lost forever if not put on paper or tape. |
