The following has been collated by Bro. Robert A Taylor ROH. PPGP
from old directories of the West Cornwall Province.

The West Cornwall Province first opened as a Primo Lodge in 1912. Its meetings were held in the Star Hotel in Penzance on the second Monday of each month. The District Primo Secretary at that time was Bro. J. Aikin, Shades Bar, Penzance.

The lodges forming the primo lodge were the First & Last Lodge No. 1531 meeting at the Star Hotel, Penzance on Tuesday nights. The Loyal Alexandra, meeting at the Union Inn, Newlyn on Friday nights and the General Wolfe meeting at the General Wolfe Hotel, St. Austell on Wednesday nights.

In 1913 the record show that the District Primo Secretary was Bro. Jack Aikin Union Inn, Newlyn. Further the 3 original lodges had been joined by the One and All Lodge No.1646 who met at the Union Hotel in Truro on Thursday evenings.

In 1914 the District Primo Secretary changed to Bro. James Edgar Bice KOM, 8 Coulson Place, Penzance. And the One and All lodge had disappeared from the records for this year leaving the 3 original lodges only.

In 1915 Bro. J E Bice was still the secretary, however the Primo Lodge increased to 5 Lodges with the addition of the Royal Lodge No.1945 who met at the Par Station on Thursdays and the White Hart Lodge No. 2008 who met at the White Hart Hotel, Hayle on Wednesdays (Fortnightly).

In 1917 the Secretary had changed to Bro. Thomas C Matthews KOM, 8 Moorland Terrace, St. Austell. At this time the Primo Lodge met in various locations in and around the St. Austell and Par area. The records for 1917 shows that only the General Wolfe Lodge, Royal Lodge and the White Hart Lodge were in existence within the Primo Lodge.

1918 and 1919 showed no changes to the set up of the Primo Lodge.

The next set of records shows that in 1922 the East Cornwall Province was formed. The lodges forming the Province were the General Wolfe No. 1594 St. Austell, Royal No.1945 Par, One and All No. 2015 Torpoint, Fountain No.3466 Liskeard, Albert Bartlett No. 3493 Fowey and the Sir George Cook No. 3676 Torpoint. The P G Secretary was Bro. William J Short KOM, 38 Par Green, Par Station.

The West Cornwall Province was formed 18th January 1923. It met at the Wodehouse Hotel, The Moor, Falmouth The Province consisted of 5 lodges. The P G Secretary was a Bro. F. J. Bryant CP, Wodehouse Hotel, Falmouth.

White Hart No.2008, White Hart Hotel, Hayle.

Basset No.3372, Basset Arms, Pool. Carn Brea.

Sir Lionel Jacobs No.4266, Wodehouse Hotel, The Moor, Falmouth.

Victor Roderick No.4351, Three Tuns Inn, Penryn.

Loyal Britannic No.4433, Britannic Hotel, Quay Street, Truro.

The Grenville Lodge joined the Province later in 1923. They met in the Grenville Arms, Troon, Camborne.


1924 showed no changes to the Province set up or meeting place.

In 1925 the PGL met at the Star Hotel, Truro and the records show that a further 6 lodges joint the West Cornwall Province. They were.

In 1926 the PGL met in the Marine Hotel, Falmouth on the first Wednesday in each month. The P G Secretary was Bro. A G Cummings, 48 Richmond Hill, Truro. The Basset Lodge No.3372 was shown as the Loyal Basset Lodge No.3372. The lodges were joined by the

Trewergie No.5460, Bullers Arms, Redruth.

The Loyal Alexandra No.5654, Star Inn, Newlyn, Penzance.

Royal No.5760, Kings Arms, Paul, Penzance.

In 1927 the PGL met at The Plume of Feathers Hotel in Pool, Redruth on the first Wednesday in each month. The P G Secretary was still Bro. A G Cummings KOM. The First & Last Lodge No.1531 joined the Province and the Royal Lodge became the Royal Cornubian No.5760.

In 1928 the PGL met at the Oxford Hotel, Redruth. The P G Secretary still being Bro. A G Cummings KOM. The lodges were joined by the Oxonion Lodge No.6332. The Province now consisted of the following lodges.

In 1929 the PGL met at the Kings Arms Hotel, Penryn. The P G Secretary was now Bro. C F Tiddy, 13 Old Hill, Falmouth. The Province lost 3 Lodges during the period. The White Hart No.2008, Roseland No.5350 & Royal Cornubian No.5740.

In 1930 the directory showed that the place of meeting of the PGL was to be decided and the Election of the P G Secretary was due to take place. During this period the Province loss the Oxonion Lodge No.6332. There were now 11 active lodges in the Province.

In 1931 the PGL met at the Plume of Feathers, Pool, Redruth and the P G Secretary was again Bro. A G Cummings KOM. 48 Richmond Hill, Truro.

In 1932 the PGL still met at the Plume of Feathers and the P G Secretary was still Bro. A G Cummings KOM. The Lodges were joined by the Trelawney Lodge No.7074, Star Inn, Crowlais, Long Rock, Marazion.

In 1933 there we no changes except Bro. Cummings was now a ROH. and a PPGP.

In 1934 the PGL met at the Western Hotel, Redruth and the P G Secretary was still Bro. A G Cummings ROH. He had now moved to The Laurels, Penwithers, Truro. The Lodges were also joined by the Lafrowda Lodge No.7171, Commercial Hotel, St. Just in Penwith, Penzance. Held on Saturdays.

In 1935 the PGL again met at The Plume of Feathers, Pool, Redruth. The P G Secretary was now Bro. D C Whittle ROH. Ventonraze, Illogan, Redruth. The Province by now had lost the Loyal Alexandra Lodge No.5654. The Province now consisted of the Following Lodges.

In 1936 the only change in the Province was the address of the First & Last Lodge No. 1531. They moved to the Fountain Tavern, Penzance.

1937 showed no changes in the Province.

In 1938 the records show that the Knights Chapter No.161 met at the Barley Sheaf Hotel, Truro on the third Sunday of the month. The Loyal Britannic No.4433 had moved to the Globe Hotel, Truro. The Bell now met at the same pub but renamed The Lanner Inn. The Trewergie No.5460 now met at Clinton Passage, Redruth.

In 1939 the records show that the only changes were. The Knights Chapter now met at the Lanner Inn, Redruth on the third Sunday of the month.

In 1940 the records show that the PGL met on the last Sunday in January, April, July and October. Also the first Sunday in December at the Plume of Feathers, Pool, Redruth. The P G Secretary was still Bro. D. C. Whittle. The Province had by now lost the Trewergie Lodge No.5460. The following lodges were still active in the Province.

No directory records are available for the years 1941, 1942, 1943 or 1944.

In 1945 there were no changes from 1940 with the exception that the PGL met at the Plume of Feathers Hotel at Pool on the first Saturday in February, April, June, July, August, September, November and December.

The First & Last 1531 had moved to the Fountain Tavern, St. Clare St. Penzance.

Victor Roderick No.4351 had moved to the Red Lion Hotel, Penryn.

John Harris No.5147 had moved to the Marine Hotel, Lower Quay St. Falmouth.

In 1946 the records show that the PGL met on the first Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth. The P G Secretary was still Bro. D. C. Whittle.

The Victor Roderick Lodge No.4351 moved to the Fifteen Balls Hotel, Penryn.

The Grenville Lodge No.4936 moved to the Vestry Hall, Camborne.

In 1947 the records show that the PGL met on the first Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth. The P G Secretary was still Bro. D. C. Whittle.

The Knights Chapter No.161 moved its meeting place to Fifteen Balls Hotel, Penryn.

The Grenville Lodge No.4936 moved to the Tyacks Hotel, Camborne.

The Penlee Lodge No.7821 joined the province for the first time. They met at the Star Inn, Newlyn, Penzance.

There was no directory issued for 1948

In 1949 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth. The P G Secretary was still Bro. D. C. Whittle.

The Knights Chapter No.161 moved its meeting place to Globe Hotel, Truro, meeting on the third Sunday of the month at 6.30pm.

The Grenville Lodge No.4936 moved to the White Hart Hotel, Commercial St. Camborne.

The Province lost the Trelawney Lodge No. 7074 sometime during 1948.

In 1950 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth. The P G Secretary was still Bro. D. C. Whittle. The Cornubus No.8100 joined the Province during the last year. The Province now consisted of the following Lodges. The Knights Chapter No.161 met at the Globe Hotel, Truro on the third Sunday at 7pm.

In 1951 the records show that the PGL still met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth. The P G Secretary had changed to Bro. L. A. Amess. Under Thuel House, Perranporth, Cornwall. The Sir Lionel Jacobs Lodge No.4266 now met at the Gyllng Hall, Gyllng St. Falmouth on Monday evenings. The John Harris now met at the Commercial Hotel, Lower Quay St. Falmouth on Thursday evenings. The Cornubus No.8100 had now changed its name to the Cornubia No.8100 and now met at the Cornish Arms, Hayle on Tuesday evenings.

In 1952 the records show that the PGL met on the third Sunday of the month in each month at the Lanner Inn, Lanner, Redruth at 7pm. (I think this must be incorrect as the Knights Chapter meets at the same time in Truro.) The P G Secretary was now shown as Bro. E. T. Roberts, 53 Mount Pleasant, Hayle, Cornwall.

The First and Last No.1531 now met at the British Legion Club, Chapel Street, Penzance on Wednesdays.

In 1953 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was still Bro. E. T. Roberts, 53 Mount Pleasant, Hayle, Cornwall. The Knights Chapter had moved to the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool and met on the third Sunday at 7.15pm. The records show that during the last year the Floral Lodge No.8469 had joined the Province. They met at the Star Hotel, Helston on Tuesdays at 7.30pm.

The Victor Roderick No.4351 now met at the Seven Stars Hotel, Penryn on Fridays of each week. The Loyal Britannic No.4433 had now moved to the William 1V Hotel, Truro and continued to meet on Thursdays.

In 1954 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was now Bro. R. T. Reed, 5 Meadowside Road, Swanvale, Falmouth.

The John Harris Lodge now met at the R.A.O.B. Club & Institute, 15 Market Stand, Falmouth on Thursdays.

In 1955 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was still Bro. R. T. Reed, 5 Meadowside Road, Swanvale, Falmouth. The Knights Chapter had moved to the William 1V Hotel, Kenwyn Street, Truro and continued to meet on the third Sunday at 7.15pm. The St. Eia Lodge had joined the Province during the last year meeting at the Castle Hotel, Fore Street, St. Ives, Cornwall.

In 1956 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was still Bro. R T Reed, 5 West Rise, Swanvale, Falmouth. The Knights Chapter had moved to the Seven Stars Hotel, Penryn. The Point of Watch Lodge No.8732 had now joined the Province, meeting at the Trewellard Hotel, Pendeen, Near Penzance, Cornwall. The Sir Lionel Jacobs had moved to the RAOB Club in Falmouth.

The Province now consisted of the following lodges.

In 1957 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was still Bro. R T Reed, 5 West Rise, Swanvale, Falmouth. The Knights Chapter now met at the William 1V Hotel, Truro. During the past year the Golden Acre Lodge No.8961 meeting at the Goldstreamer Hotel, Gulval, Cornwall on Thursdays had joined the Province. The Joseph Oldham Gunning Lodge No.4798 had moved to the Globe Hotel, Truro.

In 1958 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was still Bro. R T Reed, 5 West Rise, Swanvale, Falmouth. The Knights Chapter now met at the Lanner Inn, Lanner, Redruth. The Victor Roderick Lodge now met at Tresooth Lane, Penryn. During the last year the St. Uny Lodge No.9046 joined the Province. They met at the Bullers Arms, Falmouth Road, Redruth on Sundays.

In 1959 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was still Bro. R T Reed, 5 West Rise, Swanvale, Falmouth. The Knights Chapter now met at the RAOB Club & Institute, 15 Market Strand, Falmouth. Meeting on the third Saturday at 7pm. During the year the Sir Henry Irving Lodge, who met at the Halsetown Inn, Halsetown, St. Ives on Mondays.

In 1960 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was still Bro. R T Reed, 5 West Rise, Swanvale, Falmouth. The Knights Chapter now met at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth, on the third Saturday at 7pm. The Joseph Oldham Gunning Lodge No.4798 now met at the Swan Hotel, Truro.

The Loyal Britannic No.4433 now met at the Barley Sheaf, Old Bridge Street, Truro and the Grenville Lodge No.4936 now met at the Unicorn Hotel, Church Street, Camborne on Fridays.

In 1962 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was still Bro. R T Reed, 5 West Rise, Swanvale, Falmouth. The Knights Chapter No.161 now met at the Plume of Feathers Hotel on the second Saturday at 6.30pm. The St. Eia Lodge No.8651 now met at the Labour Rooms, St. Ives on Thursdays. The Golden Acre Lodge No.8961met at the Victoria Inn, Market Jew Street, Penzance and the Sir Henry Irving Lodge met at the R.F.C. Club, The Stennack, St. Ives. During the last year the William Cooms Lodge No.9351 joined the Province. They met at the Britannia Hotel, Chacewater, Truro on Fridays.

In 1963 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was still Bro. R T Reed, 5 West Rise, Swanvale, Falmouth. The Loyal Britannic No.4433 had now moved to the London Inn, Pydar Street, Truro, Still meeting on Thursdays. The Lafrowda No.7171 now meet at the Commercial Hotel, St. Just in Penwith. The St. Eia Lodge No.8651 moved to the RFC Club, The Stennack, St. Ives and the Sir Henry Irving Lodge had moved to the RAOB Club, Halsetown, Halsetown, St. Ives.

In 1964 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was Bro. R T Reed, 5, 5 West Rise, Swanvale, Falmouth. But during the year changed to Bro. K G Gilbert, Little Beside Manor Farm, St Day, Truro.
The First & Last Lodge No.1531 moved its meetings to the Victoria Inn, Market Drew Street, Penzance. The Loyal Britannic Lodge No.4433 moved to the Star Hotel, Castle Street, Truro. The Cornubia Lodge No.8100 moved to the Royal Standard Inn, Penpol Terrace, Hayle. The Floral Lodge No.8469 moved to the Star Hotel, Helston and changed their night of meeting to Tuesdays of each week. The St. Eia Lodge No.8651 moved to the R.F.C. Club, The Stennack, St. Ives. The Sir Henry Irving Lodge No.9079 moved to the new Buffalo Club, Towednack Road, Helesveor, St. Ives.

In 1965 the records show that the PGL met on the second Saturday in each month at the Plume of Feathers Hotel, Pool, Redruth at 3pm. The P G Secretary was Bro. R T Reed, 5, 5 West Rise, Swanvale, Falmouth. But during the year changed to Bro. K G Gilbert, Haldene. Poldice Lane, Crofthandy, St. Day, Redruth.
