The Canal and all military properties were transferred to Panama over a 20-year period 1979-1999 at no cost to Panama as stipulated by the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977.

The physical legacy to the people of Panama, including all the military installations and the Panama Canal, will remain as part of the United States’ rich contributions to the cultural heritage and economy of Panama.
