Arnold, Captain Henry "Hap" H. (Army Signal Corps-retired-deceased) -- One of America's first military aviators (and trained by the Wright Brothers), Arnold was assigned to the Panama Canal Zone in March 1917In February 1917 Arnold went to Panama to organize an air service there (the 7th Aero Squadron equipped with Curtiss JN4 aircraft and Curtiss Flying Boats) which he commanded until May 1917. Cockle, Colonel Dale (Army–retired) – After graduating from U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1958 (on appointment from the Canal Zone Governor) and service schools, his first assignment was in the Canal Zone 1959-1962 as second then first lieutenant, first as Assistant Communications Officer with the 1st Battlegroup, 20th Infantry (Sykes Regulars) as a Platoon Commander of the Signal Area Support Platoon and later the 3rd Signal Platoon at Corozal (which later became the 252nd Signal Company). His last assignment before retiring from the Army in 1981 was Chief of the Army Section of the Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) in Madrid, Spain. (Cockle, who had attended Balboa Junior High School in 1950 and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1954 in the Canal Zone, attended West Point while Lieutenant General Blackshear Bryan was its superintendent 1954-1956. Bryan had served in the Canal Zone as Chief of staff of the Caribbean Command at Quarry Heights 1948-1951 initially under Lieutenant General Matthew Ridgway. Cockle and General Bryan’s son Robbie were classmates at Balboa Junior High School and at West Point. (George Cockle, listed below, is Dale Cockle's older brother.)

Cockle, Lieutenant Colonel George (Army-retired) – After enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1947 (after graduating from Balboa High School same year), attended basic training at Howard Field/Fort Kobbe and then served in the 91st Reconnaissance Squadron at Howard Field and France Field in the Canal Zone and Waller Field in Trinidad.  After re-enlisting in the Army, he was selected as enlisted aide to General Blackshear Bryan, Chief of staff of the Caribbean Command at Quarry Heights 1948-1951. He then attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Riley, Kansas. He retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel in 1970 after serving in infantry and aviation assignments. (George Cockle is Dale Cockle’s older brother.)

Grigore, Julius Jr., Captain (U.S. Navy Reserve, Retired) – Upon recall to active duty with the Navy 1968-1972, Grigore served as Officer in Charge of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair at Fort Amador, Canal Zone. During that period he was also senior Navy technical advisor to the Latin American navies, commander of U.S. Naval Industrial Standby Facility – Balboa Shops, and Salvage Officer for Commander, 15th Naval District. Before recall to active duty in 1968, he was Assistant Chief/Acting Chief, Industrial Division, of the Panama Canal Company’s shipyard complex. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the University of Detroit, and Harvard Business School, Advanced Management Program. He has authored numerous articles for the National Transportation Journal, Military Engineer, Panama Canal Review, and Explorer’s Journal. He has written seven books and published 57 others as reprints (with update material) about Panama, the Panama Canal, and the Panama Railroad (more on the books at www.cz images.com).  He is a founding member of the Panama Historical Society.

Judd, Leo D. (rank unknown) (Army - deceased) – Assigned as a cook in Company E, 33rd Infantry Regiment 1916-1920 at Camp Empire on the West Bank of the Panama Canal (when the 33rd was activated in the Canal Zone July 6, 1916). Judd supposedly arrived in the Canal Zone 1915, probably assigned to the 5th Infantry or the 10th Infantry both already in the Canal Zone. Personnel from those two units were part of the nucleus of the newly formed 33rd Infantry Regiment. Inscribed in his bible was August 1917 Gatun Canal Zone  [Source: His grandson Scott Bicksler, 30 March 2008]

Landron, Sergeant First Class Manuel (Army-retired) – Served three assignments with the Army in Panama: 4th Battalion (Mechanized), 20th Infantry at Fort Clayton (1974-1977); Company B, 3rd Battalion, 5th Infantry at Fort Kobbe (1977-1980); and HHC of Headquarters Command serving at Rodman Ammunition Storage Point (1984-1990). After retiring in 1991, he has been living in Panama since 1994 where he is active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) chapter in Panama as commander of VFW Post 3822. Lehnert, Major / Colonel Michael R. (U.S. Marine Corps) -- Assignments with Southern Command in 1988-1990 as a major in the J-3/ Operations Directorate as Chief, Central American Exercise Branch including participating in Operations Just Cause and Promote Liberty; returned to Panama in 1999 as Chief of Staff, Joint Task Force Panama to oversee the final turnover of the Panama Canal and the remaining military bases   [For later assignments GO TO]

Lejeune, Major John A. (U.S. Marine Corps-retired-deceased) -- In the fall of 1903 Major Lejeune was dispatched to Panama as commander of the Marine battalion when conditions had become critical through the revolution against Colombia and departed Panama December 21, 1904.  He returned to Panama three years later to command a battalion of Marines May 29 - July 6, 1906 at Camp Elliott in the Panama Canal Zone as detached duty, after which he was ordered to the Philippines.
