Mortuary (Pacific
side adjacent to Gorgas Army Hospital)
Concurrent with the transfer of
the Gorgas Hospital Complex from the Canal Zone Government's
Medical Bureau to U.S. Army Medical Department Activity-Panama (MEDDAC),
the mortuary was transferred to the Army (at that time, the 193d
Infantry Brigade (Panama), later U.S. Army South) because Army
MEDDACs do not operate mortuaries.
USE BY PANAMA:
| It continues to be used as a
mortuary now by the Panamanian Government's Institute of Legal
Medicine (Panama's coroner). |

Corozal
Cemetery (Pacific side
-- adjacent to Gaillard Highway between Corozal and Fort Clayton)
| 42 acres of the original
58-acre cemetery was
transferred to Panama in early 1980s for Panamanian citizens,
many whom had been buried there before the transfer.
| Since then, the remaining
16-acre U.S. sector (where nearly 5,100 U.S. veterans and
dependents are buried) was
administered by the American Battles Monuments Commission (ABMC),
which administers all U.S. military cemeteries overseas. |
| Since 1999, ABMC continues to
administer the U.S. sector under a special agreement between
the Governments of Panama and the United States with the U.S.
Embassy providing oversight. Under special agreement
with the Government of Panama, the U.S. flag is flown over the
cemetery, as done at other cemeteries abroad administered by
ABMC. |
