Give Me One Reason

Captain Picard returned to the Enterprise after a ten day leave to a archaeological conference on Telis 3. His "vacation" fit in perfectly with the Enterprises scheduled maintenance layover at Star Base 12. He arrived a little later than he wanted to, so he had to make a beeline for the briefing in the conference room.

Upon entering through the doors, he immediately took his seat at the head of the table. Looking around he noticed an empty seat. "Where is Dr. Crusher?"

As he looked to the faces of the officers present, no one was able to look him in the eye. And most were fidgeting uncomfortably in their seats.

Looking to his First Officer, "Number One, is there a problem?"

"Uh...well, Sir...I meant to brief you before the meeting, but you were late. And...well", Will Riker stammered, wishing he didn't have to do this.

Getting just a little upset, the captain urged him on, "Well what Will? Is the doctor ill or something?"

"No sir she..."

Just then the doors to the conference room opened, and a man entered. "Sorry I'm late Captain. I guess I lost track of time getting acquainted with the sick bay," the man walked over to the captain and extended his hand, "Cmdr. John Ansarn."

Captain Picard took the man's hand hesitantly. Seeing the confused look on the captain's face, the commander continued, "Dr. John Ansarn, you're new chief medical officer."

Beverly Crusher, former CMO of the Starship Enterprise, sat in her quarters on Star Base 12, and fumed. She was supposed to be out of here by now, and would have been if that hunk of crap called a transport hadn't had engine trouble. Jean Luc was sure to have returned by now, and she defiantly did not want to run into him. Just thinking about him caused her to flush red with suppressed anger.

<begin first flashback here>

Dr. Crusher made her way down the corridor to the Captain's quarters for their daily ritual, breakfast. Beverly was in a happy mood this morning, as evidenced by the noticeable bounce in her step. She decided it was due to the fact of their impending shore leave once they reached the star base. Jean Luc had mentioned in passing several weeks back that she should make plans for them to do something there, and she was excited about the prospect of their upcoming time together.

"Come" the Captain replied to the chime at the door.

"Good Morning Jean Luc" the red head greeted him, and proceeded to help herself to some coffee, and croissants. Sitting on the couch opposite the captain she continued, "So, when are we due to arrive at Star Base 12?"

The Captain set his cup down with a gleam in his eye. Beverly noticed his apparent enthusiasm, and couldn't wait to tell him of her plans for them. But before she could say something, he began to speak "We're due to dock at 0800. And I'm not ashamed to say this, but this is one of the first times I am actually looking forward to some time off (Beverly's heart leapt at the admission). I'll barely have enough time to get things squared away here before my transport leaves for Telis 3."

Beverly heart fell, "Telis 3? But I..."

Jean Luc interrupted her, not noticing how his announcement had disturbed her "Yes, it's quite exciting. They are having an archaeological symposium there. But they have also discovered a new Telisian settlement on the northern continent. I've been invited to assist in the dig." The captain finished, and went to take a sip of his drink.

Beverly saw how excited he was about being able to do something in one of his favorite hobby's. 'I guess I could change my plans'. Then she remembered something about Telis 3, "Isn't Telis 3 subject to severe climatic conditions?"

"Yes it is, but there has been a Star Fleet research team there, and they are supposedly trying to get a weather grid going. There shouldn't be any problems."

Before Beverly could talk to him about the plans she had made (he obviously forgot all about them) his communicator chirped.

"Riker to Captain Picard"

"Go ahead."

"Sir, we're a little ahead schedule here. We'll be docking at Star Base 12 in 10 minutes."

"On my way.." The Captain got up to leave, "Beverly, hope you have a good leave. I probably won't see you again til I get back. Goodbye,,," And he was out the door before she could say a word.

<end first flashback>

* * * * *

That was ten days ago, and the unresolved anger still burned deep within her. Jean Luc better just consider himself lucky she left, because if she saw him again she was gonna...well, she was sure she could think of (and had) several very painful scenarios.

If the scene in the Captain's cabin had been heartbreaking, what she saw later that morning had shattered her.

<begin second flashback here>

*Screw him!* Beverly thought as she stomped around her cabin getting her stuff ready to go. *I can have just as good a time without him.* She decided not to cancel the plans she had made. She would just be going solo. Which was fine with her. Since she didn't think anyone would want to be around her right now.

Beverly beamed to the central pad at the star base. It was the hub of activity. Everyone was trying to get somewhere, be it a transport off base, or down to the planet below. She looked around momentarily, just to get her bearings, when she saw Jean Luc across the quad. She decided to go over, and give him a little piece of her mind (and maybe her hand as well). When he turned slightly, and she saw who he was standing with...Nella Darren.

Her heart stopped...or it felt like it had stopped. And she stopped also, staring at them. She laughed, and touched him on the arm. He made a gesture with his arm, and she went to walk with him. Beverly couldn't help it, but she followed.

*That rat bastard! I can't believe he would lie to me about what he was doing.* She followed them for a few minutes as they walked to their destination. *Please, don't let it be what I think...* And then, Jean Luc Picard and Nella Darren got on the same transport ship together.

<End second flashback here>

* * * * *

The captain stared at the man, his mouth slightly ajar. Realizing his position, Jean Luc pulled the Captain mask on again. "Number One, do you mind explaining to me what happened to Dr. Crusher?" *She left me. Again...*

"Well Sir, I'm not really sure how exactly it happened." Riker was stalling.

"Try...hard." The captain was not happy, and everyone in the room knew it.

"At approximately 1400 the day we got into space dock, Admiral Bradenton issued orders for Dr. Crusher to report to Starfleet Medical on Earth. Dr. Ansarn was assigned to us 3 days later. I tried to find out why, but the Admiral wasn't exactly forthcoming. Something about Fleet needs coming first."

*What the hell is going on here* the Captain thought to himself.

"How can they just yank her off the Enterprise like that. It's not exactly standard procedure. I didn'tmrequest a transfer, and Beverly didn't either." Before he could figure it out, they received a call from the bridge.

"Bridge to Captain Picard"

"Go ahead"

"Sir, Star Base 12 has relayed a priority one message. Should I transfer it to the conference room?"

"Yes, pipe it through.."

The face of Commodore Sten appeared on the screen. "Captain Picard, there has been a natural disaster at the Tranor colony on Valtus 1. There are reportedly hundreds of casualty's. As soon as extra medical personnel from the base are beamed over, you are to go there immediately." The Vulcan commander said without a trace of emotion.

"Of course sir. Picard out." The captain turned to the officers around the table.

"Well Dr. Ansarn, seems like you're to be initiated early as the CMO. Better go meet your people, and get sick bay ready."

"Yes sir." He said as he hurried out the door.

Looking around at the remaining officers "Well, the rest of you know what to do."

They all got up, and left. No one said a word to him. The Counselor gave him a small smile of comfort, but left also as she saw he was unresponsive.

* * * * *

Beverly Crusher was in the last place in the universe she wanted to be. Instead of on a transport to Caldos, she was on the Enterprise. Some medical emergency got her drafted (against some vehement arguing on her part) by that insufferable (and unflappable) Vulcan base commander. Not even an appeal to her buddy Admiral Bradenton could get her out of this.

Upon materializing with the other "draftees", Beverly was met by the darkly handsome face of an old friend of hers,

"John, how are you?"

A big smile came to his face as he came over to clasp her hands gently, "Beverly, I didn't think I would be seeing you again so soon. Having second thoughts about leaving the Enterprise?" He inquired with a sly grin.

Beverly had been the one who recommended him for the CMO position.

"Defiantly not. This is the last place I want to be at the moment," her temper flared with her words.

"Gee, thanks Bev. And here I thought you liked me." Dr. Ansarn put on a sad (but transparently fake) face.

"Oh quit it John (she playfully jabbed him in the side). You know you have nothing to do with it."

John Ansarn was one of her oldest medical school "buddies". And yes, he indeed knew of her dilemma. Had known ever since a certain hot tempered (and dare he say it...fickle) medical cadet was caught between the attraction she felt for two men at the same time.

* * * * *

<prepare to leave on another flashback. a little bit further this time. approximately 25 years back>

Beverly entered the common area of the quarters she shared with 3 other medical cadets.

(A whistle of appreciation comes from a form on the couch) "Wow Bev, you look great. Jack doesn't know what he's in for tonight."

A doubtful grin comes across her face, "And how do you know Jack will like it. It's not like you would know."

"Ah, you wound me (he dramatically clutches his chest). Just because I would rather jump Jack's bones instead of yours...or for that matter, how about that sexy Captain. He's definitely my style." John finished with a lecherous grin on his face.

*My style too* Beverly thought to herself. "John, you keep your paws off Jack...and Jean Luc."

"Well, I wish you would pick one. So I can have the leftover."

(John artfully dodged a comb thrown in his general direction). John really knew how this was upsetting Beverly. She had met Jack several months ago, and the man was hopelessly in love with her. He suspected that she loved him too. But then, the Captain showed up. Some French guy (with an English accent. Go figure), who had completely swept Beverly off her feet.

."John...I wish I knew what to do..." She faltered slightly, and John came over and enfolded her in a hug.

"It's going to be ok Bev. You'll see. Just follow your heart. So, what are you and Jack doing tonight." John tried to lighten the mood before his friend started to cry.

She tried to be so tough on the outside, but he knew she was torn on the inside. Torn between safe, and some all encompassing love. He knew she was afraid to lose herself, her control.

Straightening herself up, "Well, we're supposed to be going on a double date with one of his best friends. He fixed up one of the people he works with him".

"Oh no. Not a blind date...I hate those. (the door chime interrupts) I'll get it Bev. Why don't you go freshen up"

 The door opens revealing Jack Crusher, and a gorgeous blond female "Hi Jack, and..."

Jack allows his companion to enter, "Hi John...this is Sarah Chandler. Sarah, this is John Ansarn. One of Beverly's roommates (they shake hands). Where's Beverly?"

"Ah, she's just finishing up. She should be out in a second."

As if on cue, Beverly comes out of her room. Jack takes a minute to look at her, his mouth slightly open. "Bev, you look...you look great." Jack comes over and kisses her on the cheek.

"Beverly, this is Sarah Chandler. Sarah, Beverly."

Beverly looks around, "Where's her date Jack?"

"Oh, um... we'll be meeting him at the restaurant. (Looking at the chrono) As a matter of fact, we better get going. Don't want to be late. "

Beverly grabbed her bag, "See you later John. Don't get into too much trouble."

With a wicked grin, "I won't, if you won't".

* * * * *

The restaurant was full of old world charm and ambiance. It was French. Or so Jack told her. His friend had recommended it. The host showed them to a dark romantic corner of the restaurant. He informed them that their guest was already here.

Moving towards their table, Beverly was preoccupied with the thought of something else that was French. The memory of the kiss they had shared the night before made the color in Beverly's cheeks rise. Consequently, she didn't notice the man at the table they were approaching. However, Jack's voice brought her out of her libidinous thoughts.

"Jean Luc, there you are. I'd like you to meet Sarah Chandler." Jean Luc took her hand in greeting, but was a little shocked to see the other woman. "And this (gesturing to a frozen Beverly) is the love of my life, Beverly Howard. Beverly, this is one of my best friends, Jean Luc Picard."

Jean Luc took her hand, and immediately felt the electricity he always felt when he touched her.

"Ms. Howard, it's a pleasure to meet you." His hand lingered a second longer than necessary before he released her hand.

"Like wise Jean Luc." Jack went to pull a chair out for Beverly, while Jean Luc took care of his "date".

*Oh my God* both Jean Luc and Beverly thought in unison. Jean Luc ended up next to her at the round table. His leg touched hers as he slid under the table. *If he touches me again, I don't think I'll be able to handle it. God, he makes me...*

A waiter interrupted Beverly's train of thought as he asked for drink orders.

"Jean Luc, why don't you order some wine for us. Jean Luc's family has a vineyard in France." (Jack said in explanation to the ladies at the table).

"Of course. Can you bring a bottle of the Picard Chateau 44'."

Jean Luc ordered a quality wine, not the vineyards best, but good. However, his mind was on the red head seated next to him. *She told me about someone else, but I had no idea it was Jack. He's so in love with her.."Jean Luc's heart seemed to drop at the thought.

Trying his best to ignore her (even as her perfume assailed him), Jean Luc turned to his date. He was determined not to let Jack know about his acquaintance with "his" girlfriend. And soon to be fiancee'. Jack had informed him earlier (when he badgered Jean Luc into this blind date) that he intended on asking Beverly to marry him.

Everyone at the table was making inconsequential small talk when the wine arrived. Jean Luc tasted it, and approved it for the table.

Sipping their wine, Jack said "So, Jean Luc, is the Stargazer going to ship out on time? I know they were having a problem with the engine refit."

"Yes. We're still on schedule to leave space dock in two days." He finished, and looked at Beverly over his glass. He couldn't help but look at her. The sight of her distracted him to no end. All he wanted to do was...*Stop it Jean Luc. She's not yours. Thank God I'm leaving in 2 days.*

*He's leaving. He never told me.* Beverly thought, feeling a sudden sense of loss. Loss for something that she would never have. *Maybe it's all for the best, but god... look at his eyes. All I want to do is...*

Again, her thoughts were interrupted by a communicator beep. Actually, two beeps. It was Star Fleet requesting Jack and Sarah to report back to headquarters for some undetermined reason.

Jack looked apologetically at Beverly. "I'm sorry Bev. Duty calls. Jean Luc, would you mind showing Beverly a good time tonight (He gave Beverly a quick kiss on the cheek). Oh, and if this is what I think it is, don't wait up for me. I'll probably end up going off planet for a couple days. (Looking to Jean Luc). Sorry about this Johnny. I was hoping that we all could spend some more time together before you left (he grabbed Jean Luc's hand). Who knows, maybe I'll get assigned to the Stargazer."

A tense silence fell on the table after Sarah and Jack left. Beverly quietly drank her wine waiting for something to happen.

"Would you like some more wine?" Jean Luc asked Beverly, seeing that her glass was empty.

"Yes. Thank You." Beverly held her glass out for Jean Luc, trying her best not to look him in the eyes. She'd be lost if she looked into those hazel depths.

Jean Luc continued to study Beverly as she drank her wine. Thinking about the situation between them made him angry. He finished his wine with a gulp, and went to pour another before finally speaking. "Why the hell didn't you tell me about Jack?"

*Nice one Johnny. Not to accusatory.*

Beverly was a bit stunned at the anger in his voice, but she also noticed a hint of hurt. "I did tell you Jean Luc. I just didn't give you some of the details."

A slightly exasperated sigh escaped his mouth, "Some of the details? Beverly, Jack oves you. And from the way he talks, the feeling is reciprocated."

What should she say. Yes, she loved Jack, but that was nothing compared to the way Jean Luc made her feel. But alas...in two days only Jack would still be here. And as her Grandmother would say, "one in the hand, is worth two in the bush". However, that cliche' didn't seem to help her at the moment. She wanted nothing more than the man across from her to make her pick him. *Make me Jean Luc. I would do so willingly if you would just make me...*

Instead, she answered him with an uneasy silence. Seeing she was not going to answer, Jean Luc downed his glass of wine, and poured another. *If Jack wasn't one of my friends Beverly...I would take you in my arms, and ...but..he is my friend. He will never know how much I..."

The waiter came to their table to ask for their orders, interrupting the silence. Jean Luc looked to Beverly, "Well...have you decided yet? I know what I want..."

Beverly pretended not to understand the full implication of his question as she answered, "Hmmm...I'm not sure," *two can play this game*, "why don't you choose Jean Luc. I'm sure I'll like whatever you order."

*Nice return Beverly. But the nights not over yet*. "Of course."

* * * * *

Along with their entrees', came another bottle of wine. Beverly noticed that Jean Luc was drinking the lion's share of that. As they talked, the tension from earlier seemed to melt away. They discussed his upcoming mission on the Stargazer, and of her research. Both careful not to mention Jack or the previous nights kiss.

Jean Luc was relating a tale from one of his last away missions. One that was fraught with danger. Beverly suddenly reached across, and grabbed his hand. "Jean Luc, promise me you'll be careful."

At first, Jean Luc was electrified by the warmth of her hand, but then he was suddenly angry again. Abruptly, he took his hand away. "Why the sudden concern Beverly?"

Jean Luc got up from the table, and left. Leaving a very confused Beverly staring after him. She sat momentarily, trying to figure things out. *What the hell was that about? Well, if he thinks he can just leave like that, he has another thing coming*

Hurrying out of the restaurant after him, Jean Luc Picard was about to be introduced to the Howard temper.

* * * * *

Outside, Jean Luc was nowhere to be seen. *Now, where is he?* Beverly decided to look for him the only place she knew, his quarters. Walking the couple kilometers or so to his place gave her plenty of time to work herself up.

Jean Luc had just finished cracking the bottle of bourbon Walker had given him a couple days back, when the door chimed. "Go away" he yelled to the caller. He knew who it was, and he couldn't stand to see her again.

Her red hair, her blue eyes...

"Let me in..."(no answer). *OK Captain. I'll play* Then Beverly used her emergency medical override to get in.

Jean Luc was surprised when the doors opened. "Get out! I didn't give you permission to come in here."

Hands on her hips, Beverly prepared to give him a piece of her mind. "Permission or not, here I am. What was the meaning of leaving me alone like that? Not only was it embarrassing, but..well, it was rude!"

The captain sat down dejectedly in a chair. She was right of course. It had been terribly inconsiderate of him to just leave her there. *But God damn it! What did she expect?* In two days, he would be gone. And she would more than likely be engaged to Jack.

Something in the way he looked caused Beverly's heart to melt just a bit. "Jean Luc, I know this situation was kind of a surprise, but I didn't lie to you. Well, not intentionally anyway. (remembering something) And if anyone should be mad it's me. You never told me you would be gone in a couple of days. What was I going to be (temper and voice rising again) just a fling while you were here? A girl in every port, eh Jean Luc?"

His head snapped up to look at her. "It was never..."

"Save the excuses for the next one. At least Jack..."

Jean Luc jumped up off the chair, and caught her to him violently, "At least Jack what Beverly?" He said in a low, dangeroussounding voice.

His breath hot on her face. "Does Jack make you feel like this?"

And he brought his mouth down on hers hard. She tried to pull away, but he grabbed the back of her head, forcing her to accept his kiss.

The fight, although strong at first, left her as his kiss burned her mouth. The fire traveled south. Then it seared her soul. She reached behind and held him tightly. He momentarily broke contact to look into her eyes, and saw a passion equaling his own. No words were said as he picked her up and carried her into the bedroom.

* * * * *

Beverly woke up to find herself in a warm embrace. She did not move, lest she wake up the man beside her. Her thoughts drifted to the situation. Last nights lovemaking with Jean Luc had been wonderful. Searing and passionate at first then tender and considerate. She had never felt the like before. *And that's the problem. At least with Jack I can be somewhat objective. Jean Luc, well...that's a different story. He's leaving in two..no make that tomorrow now. (sigh) He has a life to lead too. There's no way he'd want to be tied down.* With that thought, Beverly came to a realization, and took action.

She carefully slipped from the bed, and gathered her clothes. Before heading out the bedroom door, she glanced back one last time at the figure in the bed. *I'm doing this for both of us Jean Luc. I hope you'll understand.* A single tear escaped down her cheek as she made her escape out of his life.

* * * * *

Beverly kept herself hidden away all the next day in an obscure lab at school. She didn't want to see anyone, especially him..And that's exactly where John found her a 2000 that night.

"There you are! I've been looking all over for you."

She turned to look at him, her face drawn and sad. "I had some work to do, and I guess I lost track of time."

Seeing his friend like this caused the day's events to fall into place. "You know, I'm not the only one who's been looking for you. That Captain Picard has left at least a dozen messages, and he even came over and insisted on checking to see if you were in."

"I'm sorry John. He didn't pull rank on you did he?"

"Oh, I wasn't home. But he scared the shit out of Kat. I guess he can be pretty scary when he's angry. (Seeing the tears start to well up in her eyes) What the hell happened last night?" He asked as he put his arms around her, and listened to her story through the sobs.

"It'll be all right Bev." He said as he stroked a tear from her cheek. "Now why don't you go get cleaned up, I know exactly what you need."

She looked up to him questioningly, and noticed the mischievous glint in his warm eyes. "Oh no...I don't think..."

He cut her off with a playful shove, "Sorry Bev, future doctor's orders. You shall have fun tonight. You know what they say, "The blues ain't nuthin' but a good woman feelin' bad".

  <end third flashback>

* * * * *

It would take 18 hours at warp 7 to reach Valtus 1, so Picard did a little research in his ready room to try and figure out what happened to his "former" CMO. The first order of business was to find out exactly where Beverly was now. He learned that she received permission for three weeks leave en route to her next assignment, Star Fleet Medical on Earth.

So, next he searched transportation off of Star Base 12. *Hmm..there it is... a transport ship with a stop at Caldos. And with a B. Crusher listed as a passenger. Good, at least I know where she is. Now to find out who snatched her away from me.* Jean Luc absently ran his hand over his head as he sipped some tea.

"Picard to Data"

"Go ahead sir."

"Data, I need to talk with an Admiral Badenton at Starfleet Headquarters. Put it through to my ready room when you get him."

The captain of the Enterprise sat back, and prepared himself to give a piece of his mind to the person responsible for taking away "his" CMO.

"Data to Captain Picard. Sir, I have Admiral Bradenton."

"Send it in Data" Picard turned to the view screen on his desk as the image of Admiral Bradenton appeared. He didn't know the admiral personally, only by reputation.

"What can I do for you Captain Picard?" asked the graying admiral.

"First of all, sir, I'd like to know why Star Fleet headquarters decided to re-assign my Chief Medical Officer without even discussing it with me or her first?" the captain asked with barely disguised anger.

The admirals eyes squinted slightly, as if he was holding back "I think you should discuss this with Dr. Crusher first Captain Picard before you..."

Picard cut him off, "I can't discuss it with her because she's on some transport to Caldos. And she had no control over where HQ sends her, but..."

"Captain Picard, Star Fleet headquarters had nothing to do with initiating your former CMO's transfer. She requested it. And to tell you the truth, I was more than happy to grant her request to come back here. Secondly, she is not on that transport ship, she's on the Enterprise. And believe me, she did everything in her power not to be there. But with this situation at the Tranor Colony, it couldn't be helped. Now, if you'll excuse me Captain. Bradenton out."

Picard sat back in his chair trying to assimilate everything the admiral had said. *Beverly requested a transfer...but why? Why didn't she talk to me? (anger rising within him) God damn it! (he shoved a PADD off his desk)*

"Computer, location of Dr. Crusher"

"Dr. Crusher is in sick bay."

Captain Jean Luc Picard left his ready room, a man on a mission.

  * * * * *

The new and the former CMO of the Enterprise were busy with preparations for the coming mission. John silently deferred to Beverly since she was still better acquainted with the sick bay, and it's staff. And in all reality, John Ansarn was not getting too comfortable with his new position. Not that he really minded, he loved Beverly Crusher. She was a dear friend. *But you can be so stubborn sometimes, my dear.*

John realized a long time ago, that Beverly Crusher (then Howard) would one day have to deal with the man that was Jean Luc Picard. She had been running for 25 years. She ran into a marriage with Jack Crusher. She ran to her work. When confronted with him in person, she ran into a comfortable "friendship". Quite frankly, there was nowhere else to run to. *Well, there is one place left to run to. But she'll probably go kicking and screaming the whole way there.*

The sick bay doors opened, and a "quiet fell across the land". John looked up, and thought *Think of the devil...*

"Dr. Crusher, I'd like to talk to you in your office. Now." The captain asked (more like commanded).

"I don't have an office here any more Captain. If you remember, I'm no longer chief medical officer." She answered with a spark of flame that was classic Beverly.

"Dr. Ansarn, do you mind?"

"Uh, no sir. Go right ahead." John gave Beverly a silent plea of support as she headed into "her" office. The captain close behind.

* * * * *

Picard didn't even give her a chance to turn around before he laid into her. "You want to explain to me why the hell you thought it necessary to transfer off the Enterprise behind my back?" He said through clenched teeth, his anger clearly evident.

Commander Crusher assumed a classic military stance, feet apart, and hands behind her back (lest she decide to smack something) before she replied, "Captain Picard, I am under your command for this mission, and this mission only. I will follow your orders *within reason, of course*. However, the decision to leave the Enterprise was a personal one. And quite frankly, none of your damn business...Sir."

Fury permeated his being, he could feel his control slipping. He turned away, and used several calming techniques before he dared to speak again. He turned to look at her, and decided that maybe a different tact was in order *She can be so damn hard headed*. He tried to talk as gently as he could, "Beverly..."

She cut him off, "Is that all Sir?"

He reached over and grabbed her shoulders, his fingers biting into the flesh. "No that is not all. (She avoided his gaze as his hot breath brushed her cheek) Look at me. Did you think you could just walk out of my life again? Did you think I would let you? Talk to me, Beverly." *Oh god, please talk to me...*

She shrugged out of his grasp, eyes flashing. "I tried to talk to you ten days ago. Now, if you'll excuse me captain, I have a lot of work to do before we get to Valtus 1." And she slipped out without waiting for an answer.

* * * * *

Beverly strode out of her office, and looked around to find John. Everyone was avoiding looking in her direction. Spying her friend, "John, let's get down to cargo bay 12, and see how things are going."

Not waiting for an answer, she exited through the sickbay doors.

It took John a couple seconds to catch up to her, "Well?"

"Well, what John?"

e let out an exasperated sigh, "What happened back there? He looked pretty pissed off."

She didn't answer until they were safely ensconced in the turbo-lift. "Fuck him! He has the nerve to sit there and act like I was the one who was in the wrong. When he was the one who went running off with that...that bitch! And to top it all off, he lied to me about it. "

Beverly was on the verge of tears. Whether they were tears of anger, or hurt (probably both), he didn't know. John stopped the lift, and enveloped his friend in a hug. John listened sympathetically as she told him the tale of ten days ago. Once finished, he made sure she was presentable before resuming their journey to the cargo bay.

"Beverly, I don't know what to say. I can understand why you wanted to leave."

The lift doors opened, and cut off any further "personal" conversation. For the next 12 hours they were so busy with the coming emergency relief effort, that no one had any time to think about their personal problems.

* * * *

The senior officers were gathered in the conference room waiting for the CMO, and the pre-mission briefing to start. Dr. Ansarn walked in followed by Dr. Crusher. No one said anything, but the tension in the room became so thick that you could cut it with a knife.

The captain said nothing to the former CMO, but instead he watched her through veiled eyes as she came and sat next to Dr. Ansarn (who had taken her once customary position, beside him).

Tearing his eyes away from her, he started "Mr Data, would like to update us on the condition at Valtus 1?"

The android filed away the peculiar reactions he had witnessed the past few seconds for later analysis, "Certainly Captain. The Tranor Colony on Valtus 1 is a basic agricultural venture with a population of 2544 humans, alatians, and danaans. Approximately 20 standard hours ago, the colony suffered a severe earthquake measuring 9.1 on the Richter scale. Since the colony is mostly based on the coast of a southern hemispheres' ocean, it has been hit by several Tsunami's. Before we lost contact 12.34 hours ago, casualties were estimated at about 50% (a gasp was heard from Beverly). We are due to arrive at Valtus 1 in 34.23 minutes."

The captain turned toward the two doctors to his right, "Dr. Ansarn, do you have enough medical personnel to handle the injured."

"We'll have to Captain. We could also use crew members for basic triage, and movement of patients." Dr. Ansarn answered.

"Number One, coordinate with the CMO and make sure he has all the crew support needed. Mr. Worf, you'll take security to the planet to make sure everything moves along as orderly as possible. Counselor, I would also like you to go to the planet, and help anyway you can. I'm sure they'll be a lot of scared people down there. Data, are there any special precautions that our people need to take while down on the planet?" The captain swivelled his head slightly to look at the second officer, but his gaze was for the red haired doctor who sat next to the android.

Beverly met his gaze briefly before turning to look at Data as he started to answer the captain's question. "Valtus 1 was considered a geologically stable planet. However, I was reviewing some of the background data on some of the projects that were underway, and I discovered that the small research center located at the Tranor colony was investigating thermal energy located in the mantel of the planet. A thermite charge detonation, common in that type of research, theoretically could have caused a shift in the tectonic plates. Statistically, the risk is small. I do not think the away teams will be in danger from another earthquake, but there is a risk of more tidal waves."

Beverly talked for the first time since entering the conference room, "There will also be risk of transmittable diseases associated with the breakdown of basic functions such as water and sewage. But I think we can handle that. There is also the problem of the colony's non-human residents. Alatians are a water species, similar to earth dolphins. One of our medical teams will have to don suitable environmental suits to treat them if necessary. Danaans can be a problem when they are sick or injured. They are canid in appearance, and have a wicked set of sharp teeth which they tend to use under duress. Hopefully, the Danaan healer is still alive so we'll be able to coordinate with her on treatment."

"Alright everyone, we have about 28 hours until the medical ship Lamarck gets here. So we're it until then. Data, I want you to monitor the planet surface for signs of tidal surges. Does anyone have anything to add?... Let's get to work then." The captain finished, and watched while everyone got up to go. His eyes stayed on the retreating form of one person. *As soon as this is over Beverly, we are going to have a talk, you and I*.

* * * * *

Along with security, the medical teams were there first to arrive planet side. And in keeping with tradition, the CMO (both of them) were members of that team. Dr. Ansarn and 3 med techs were designated as the alataian unit (due to the fact of significant underwater experience), and headed off towards the harbor (what was left of it).

Beverly called after her friend, "Be careful".

John looked back with a smile, "I will, if you will."

Beverly scanned the immediate area, and her heart sank at the apparent total devastation of the colony. There seemed to be several chasms in the streets that had filled up with water from the tidal waves. Her team was already triaging the visible victims. It looked as though there were several dozen strewn haphazardly about in plain view. The speed at which most of them were passed by told Beverly they were beyond a doctor's help.

A call came from a nearby building that was on the verge of collapse, "Dr. Crusher!"

Beverly ran towards the voice of one of her team members. Inside the doorway, she saw Nurse Ogawa squatting near the body of a danaan. Beverly quickly assessed "her" condition. "It looks as though she's unconscious due to a blunt force trauma to the occipital region." She adjusted the hypospray from her medkit, and injected the danaan. "There...that should bring her around. Alyssa...you better back up a little. Danaans can be..." And before Beverly could finish, a furry flash came and bit her on the arm that had been resting on its chest.

Beverly quickly snatched her arm away from the sharp teeth, and held it tightly to staunch the flow of blood that was welling up from the puncture wounds. Nurse Ogawa came over and kneeled down near her as more of a protective gesture, than to try and tend her wounds. The two women watched warily as the danaan crouched in a corner, a low growl emanating from its throat.

"It's alright...we're here to help. I'm a doctor..." Beverly tried to calm the danaan.

It slowly blinked its eyes in response to Beverly's voice. Then it stood slowly, and opened its mouth to speak. "Healer..." It said in a low voice similar to the growl it had been issuing earlier.

Sighing a little in relief, "Yes, we are healers..." Beverly stopped as she saw the creature shaking its head.

"No...I am healer." The creature looked at the blood flowing from Beverly's arm, and walked over with its paws out. "Sorry...may I?"

Seeing that it wanted to help her, Beverly nodded her head. As the danaan came over, and started to inspect the damage, Beverly asked, "What is your name?"

"I am Mrrrla. And you?"

Beverly tried not to flinch as Mrrrla started to lick the bite marks. She had read that this was part of the danaan healing method. Their saliva contained a strong antibiotic that was considered one of the best. Especially for wounds inflicted by its members.

"I am Beverly Crusher, and this Alyssa Ogawa. We're from the starship Enterprise. Do you remember what happened Mrrrla?"

"The earth shook. Then the water came. I was helping people, and then there was blackness."

Finished, Mrrrla inspected her handiwork. She turned to Nurse Ogawa, "You may use your instruments now."

Alyssa came over to close up the punctures with the protoplaser. Beverly looked to Mrrrla, "I'll have you beamed aboard. You need further..."

"No. I am the only healer. They need me. You need me." Mrrrla protested.

Beverly smiled inwardly. She knew that if she were in the same position, she would have said something similar. Not to mention, they did need her for the other danaan survivors. Beverly didn't really want to repeat the bite experience again. "Alright Mrrrla. I understand. But if you start to feel dizzy, or nauseous I want to know. You got hit pretty hard on the head..."

 "Danaans have hard heads Beverrrrly," she answered with what Beverly interpreted as a smile.

"Let's get to work then." And they headed off to help the hundreds of others.

* * * * *

Captain Picard entered the bridge late into beta shift. The rescue effort was proceeding as smoothly as possible, considering the vast numbers of casualties. So far, there had been 412 reported dead, several hundred wounded, and plenty of colonists still missing (mostly the aquatic alatians). Picard thought of how hard Beverly was working to make sure the death count didn't rise. *Beverly*. Along with the thought of her, something else occurred to him.

Inquiring with the computer (manually, of course), Picard tried to ascertain how long she had been on duty. He couldn't quite believe the information that scrolled before him. *If this is right...she hasn't slept since we left star base. And if I know Beverly, it's not bloody likely she'd been napping down on the planet either*.

Just as he was about to have Data contact the surface, the second officer turned around, "Captain, I am detecting a tidal surge on the planet surface."

Alarmed, "How long till it makes land fall?"

"Due to the unique geography of the region of ocean the colony is located at, it will only take 2 minutes and 24 seconds to reach the mainland."

The captain rose out of his chair, "Evacuate all personnel immediately!".

The pale skinned android turned around, "Captain, with the number crew and colonists still on the planet, it would be impossible to get them all off in time. And we can not contact the medical team that is in the ocean because of the refractive nature of the water."

"Get as many as you can Data."

Jean Luc Picard sat down heavily in the command chair, and waited. He listened to transporter room reports of what teams we're being beamed aboard. Colonists first, then Enterprise personnel. He paid special attention to the medical teams, of which only one had beamed aboard so far. *Not Beverly's*. The captain squirmed slightly as the time raced by.

"Mr. Data?" he asked.

"The wave should reach the colony...now."

"Did we get everybody on board in time?"

*Please...please be safe.*

"No Sir. Med teams 1 and 2 did not beam up in time."

Picards heart sank. *NO! Not another one...* The captain rose to make his way off the bridge, and down to the planet when the turbo lift doors opened to reveal Riker and Worf. The pair definitely looked the worse for wear. Worf sported a wicked set of scratch marks on his chest and face.

Picard issued a simple command, afraid to say more than one word at the moment. "Report."

Riker gave a side glance to the security chief before he ventured to say anything. He didn't want to tell the captain why Beverly Crusher was still on the planet. But...he had to. "Sir, all personnel were beamed up except for Drs. Ansarn's and Crusher's medical teams plus one danaan healer."

Captain Picard knew he wasn't saying everything. "I understand why Dr. Ansarn's team couldn't be beamed up, but what about Dr. Crusher and the danaan?"

Will Riker took a deep breath, but before he could answer Worf spoke. "It was my fault sir."

<begin mini-flashback here. planet surface minutes before the tidal wave is supposed to hit.>

Beverly was taking a short break after just beaming up her last patient. She was wolfing down a sandwich and drink when Mrrrla came over. "You need rest Beverrrrly."

The red head smiled. She liked Mrrrla. She reminded her of herself. "I will if you will".

Mrrrrla made a noise that Beverly had come to associate with laughter (even if it did sound like a cross between growling and purring).

"I guess all healers are the same, no matter who or what they are." The danaan said through her "laugh".

Mrrrla liked this human doctor. Liked her enough to consider her a pack mate.

All of a sudden, Beverly felt dizzy and nauseous. She held on to wall as she swayed slightly. Concerned, Mrrrla placed a pawed hand on her for support. "Are you well Beverrrrly?"

The dizziness passed, "Yes, I'm fine Mrrrla. I must've waited too long to eat. I'm all right now."

Just then, Riker and Worf came over. "Dr. Crusher, there you are, we must evacuate immediately. There is a tidal wave due here in less than 2 minutes."

"What! OK Will, let's start evacuating the wounded."

"We're doing that now doctor. Enterprise personnel is next, now come on."

A thought occurred to Beverly, "What about Dr. Ansarn's team?"

Riker got a regretful look on his face, "I'm sorry doctor, but the communicators won't work through the water on this planet. Something about the metallic content diffracting the signal. He'll have to fend for himself." He gently touched her to get her to move the way he wanted.

Beverly jerked her shoulder away from his push, "No Will! I'll go down and tell him. I won't leave them here. I should have enough time to..."

"There is not enough time Dr. Crusher. Enterprise 4 to beam..."

Before Riker could move, Beverly tore the communicator off her chest and turned to run when Worf caught her in his grip. And just as quickly, Mrrrla tore into the large Klingons face and chest to get him to release her pack mate.

Worf was momentarily surprised by the attack, and consequently released the doctor. Giving her and Mrrrla enough time to run towards the harbor. But before he could respond, he and Riker were caught in the Enterprises transporter beam.

<end mini-flashback>

Picard looked at Worf, "It's all right Mr.Worf. I know better than anyone that Dr. Crusher can be...somewhat difficult at times. Now, let's see if we can't find them."

Riker and Worf nodded in confirmation, and proceeded to plan the rescue effort.

* * * * *

Beverly didn't even think about what she was doing when she tore her communicator off, and twisted out of Will's grasp. She just knew she had to warn John, somehow. As she ran, she was aware of another presence keeping stride by her side. She looked, and saw Mrrrla. Beverly nodded in grim acceptance of her new found friends help.

It was dark out side, with the only light coming from the single moon hung low in the sky. Beverly realized a little too late that she would not be able to get to the harbor in time. They were farther away than she had thought. She saw the 20 meter wall of water rolling in, and barked out some instructions to the danaan healer to find something to hang on to...quickly.

The next thing Beverly knew, she was desperately fighting the enormous white water of the wave that had crashed ashore. She tumbled over, and tried to come up for breath. Suddenly, there was something against her head. Then, nothingness...

* * * * *

Beverly's mind was slowly working its way from the murky depths of unconsciousness. It was desperately trying to interpret the sensory information that the periphery nervous system was sending. Cold was the one thing she could process. That she comprehended. However, it was the sensation of floating, a weightlessness if you will, that was forcing her conscious mind to awaken. She decided she had to employ more of her senses to see where she was.

Cautiously, she opened her eyes. She barely had enough time to see the black sky above her before salt water splashed into her eyes. That's when a realization hit her...she was in the water! Reflexively, she tried to roll over...*what the hell am I on anyway!* She thought in frustration.

*You are on us* came a thought into her head. A thought that wasn't her's.

"Us...well, I guess that answers all my questions." she said out loud to the voice in her head.

She heard a lyrical sound that reminded her of laughter. *Fire human. The temper matches the hair.* Us thought into her mind.

Able to look at where she was, Beverly saw that she was being buoyed up by the ocean, and two creatures that resembled Dolphins. *Alatians. That's what you are. How did I get here?*

*We were in a cave waiting for the large water to pass, when we 'heard' you're struggles. You were caught in an undertow, and we brought you to the surface.*

"Thank you. You didn't happen to see anybody else with me did you?" Beverly asked hoping that Mrrrla was ok.

*No. You were the only one. Except for the others that are already here.*

Beverly's heart leapt, "Others? Humans you mean, Where?"

*They were also in the cave waiting for the big water to pass. But since they are not the best swimmers, we came to help. They should be here soon.*

As if on cue, the water near where she was floating started to bubble. A few seconds later a helmeted head broke the surface of the ocean. It swam over to her. Beverly saw through the face plate that it was John, and she smiled brightly at him. He took off the breathing apparatus, and returned the smile. "

You didn't keep our bargain Bev. (seeing her puzzled look, he continued) I was careful."

Beverly nodded her head in understanding, remembering the last thing they had said to each other. Again, Beverly was hit with a dizzy spell, swaying slightly. John immediately ran a medical tricorder over her. A slight grimace came over his face.

"What is it?" she asked.

"Well, you have a slight concussion, a couple bruised ribs, and you're running a fever of 39.8 degrees celsius." He answered.

Beverly thought about his diagnosis, "Why would I be running a fever?"

*Sure could explain why I'm cold in a tropical ocean* she thought.

He shook his head, "I was wondering the same thing Bev. We better get you back to shore, and up to the ship."

The alatians took her as far as they could, but Beverly had to manage the last 20 meters to shore. John helped her out of the water, and started to take off some of his gear when Mrrla came running up to them.

"Beverrrly! I was worried about you. I couldn't smell you anywhere. Are you hurt?"

Beverly was about to reply when a strong wave of dizziness hit her once again. However, this one was followed by blackness.

* * * * *

"Anything on the sensors Mr. Data?" Picard asked trying not to let his voice intone the worry he was feeling.

"Sensors pick up one life form on the surface, but it appears to be danaan. As you know, Dr.Crusher discarded her comm badge in her ..."

Captain Picard cut him off, "Yes, yes Data. I know about the doctors escape tactics. Is there anyplace else she could be that the sensors haven't swept yet?"

"There are two possibilities sir: Dr. Crusher is in the planets ocean. In which case, the sensors have the same difficulties as communications. Or she is dead.

Picard rose from his seat, and headed to the turbo lift. "I'm beaming down to the planet."

Riker gave him a brief look, but decided against objecting. He knew it wouldn't do any good. So, he gave Worf a brief nod. Worf acknowledged, and followed the captain.

* * * * *

Picard stood on the transporter pad thinking only one thing: the safe return of Beverly Crusher. He refused to believe there was any other possibility. *She's too damned stubborn to die...Don't be dead Beverly. That's an order, doctor.*

As the pair materialized on the planet, Captain Picard took a moment to look around. He noticed the total devastation of the quake and subsequent tidal waves. That's when he heard a voice a few hundred meters away yell Beverly. Both men ran off in that direction.

Jean Luc's heart was beating rapidly as he ran. Not just from the physical exertion, but from fear. Was the voice calling out in distress? The planets moon had set, so it was hard for him to make out the figures he saw down on the beach. As he got closer, he saw a tint of red on one of the forms, and his heart jumped. Then it fell just as fast as he saw that same figure collapse.

Picard came running up, and knelt by Beverlys unmoving form. He gently swept a hand across her forehead to move some of the wet hair away from her eyes, and noticed how hot she was. "She's burning up." He said to no one in particular.

Dr. Ansarn once again swept the med tricorder over her. "Oh my god. Her temperature has risen to 41.5 degrees celsius. I don't know why this is happening. She only had a concussion and some bruised ribs. But we have to get her up to sick bay. Now."

Jean Luc picked her up in his arms as Worf called for a beam out. Once aboard the Enterprise, the captain carried his former CMO all the way to sick bay. No one said a word to him as they silently trailed behind.

Once at his destination, the captain gently laid her on a biobed so Dr. Ansarn could work on her. Picard drifted back slowly, but didn't leave. Wouldn't leave until he knew she was ok.

Mrrrla was by Beverly looking at the readouts above her head. "I know what is wrong with her. (John looked at her expectantly). She is having an allergic reaction to danaan saliva."

Captain Picard decided to interject, "How the hell did she come into contact with danaan saliva?"

Mrrrla looked sheepish (well if it's possible for a "dog" to look sheepish) "I bit her when I was coming out of an unconscious state. Then when I cleaned the wound..."

The captain looked confused, and was about to say something when Dr. Ansarn jumped in. "Captain, danaan saliva has a very strong antibiotic in it. It's molecular structure is the basis for one of the federations most effective antibiotic treatments. However, danaan healers still use the traditional method of delivery."

"Which is what doctor?"

"Well, they lick the affected area. Allergic reactions are not common, but are severe if and when they occur."

As if to make that point, Beverly Crusher went into a seizure.

* * * * *

Jean Luc Picard was sitting in the CMO's office. Nurse Ogawa had "suggested" that he rest a little bit in there while waiting for word on Beverly. At the moment, he had his head in his hands on the desk, but he was not asleep.

His thoughts drifted to the last time they were in this office together. It hadn't exactly been a smashing success. He wanted to throttle her for leaving (again) without telling him. And when he grabbed her, he wanted to kiss her so hard. Hard enough to force her to stay. Then a memory flitted by of one of the last things she said to him before heading out the door. He was so angry before that it didn't really register in his conscious mind, "I tried to talk to you ten days ago..."

All of a sudden he understood. "Merde..."

* * * * *

Both John and Mrrrla looked down at the still unconscious form of Beverly Crusher. Her fever had broken and they were just waiting for her to wake up. The danaan looked to the room where the captain had retreated, then back to Beverly before she spoke.

"Should we tell her mate that he can see her now. He seemed worried." Mrrrla looked at him with tired eyes.

John was momentarily confused by her reference. "Her mate?...oh...you mean Captain Picard. (he smiled) They're not mates if I understand the way your using the word."

Now it was Mrrrla's turn to be confused. "Are you sure?" she said to him in all innocence.

"No. I'm not. I don't even think THEY are sure. Go get some rest. I'll tell the captain."

Mrrrla did not argue this time. She was exhausted, and it wouldn't help anyone if she collapsed. She touched Beverly's hand, and headed out the doors. John looked to "his" office, and let out a small breath. *Mates, huh? Wait til I tell Beverly that one.*

* * * * *

Jean Luc was sitting at the desk thinking about how he would go about apologizing to Beverly for forgetting about "their" leave plans. They had totally slipped his mind. And when the opportunity to go on that archaeological dig came by almost at the last minute. Well...Then he was so excited, and in a hurry that morning before he left, he didn't even realize what Beverly was trying to tell him. *What an ass I've been. I'll just have to make it up to her..somehow.*

John Ansarn entered his office looking very tired. The captain immediately got up, and moved around from behind the desk "How is she?"

John eyed him for a moment before answering. He was debating on whether or not he should give him a piece of his mind or not. But finally decided against it. Whatever the captain may have done to his friend, he was apparently worried as hell right now.

"The fever has broken, but she is still unconscious. I'm not really worried about that though. She had gone for quite some time without any sleep."

"40 hours" the captain said softly.

"What?" John asked.

"Nothing. Can I see her?"

"Sure, but only for a little bit. You look like you could use some rest yourself."

Bristling a little bit, "I'm fine Doctor."

"I can make that an order if you like..." John's stern words didn't match the expression on his face.

Picard softened a bit, "Have you been taking lessons from Dr. Crusher?" He didn't wait for a reply as he walked out the door to go see Beverly.

John smiled at the retreating back of Jean Luc Picard. *How the hell did he know she was up for 40 hours? Hmm...not really the actions of a man who didn't care. Now...what was the name of that woman...Netta...no...Nella. Nella Darren.*

And with that, John went to do some investigating on his computer.

* * * * *

Jean Luc gazed down at the form on the biobed. She looked much better than she did on the beach when she was sopping wet and feverish. In fact, she appeared to be asleep...like she could wake up at any minute. He brought a chair over, and sat down. He gently took one of her hands, and held it with both of his. It seemed cool, so he gently rubbed it.

"Beverly...I'm so sorry." He laid his head down where their hands were at, and closed his eyes. He would stay just a few minutes. Just..a...few...min...

* * * * *

John emerged from his office three hours later tired from all the investigating he had been doing. But it was worth it. That's when he noticed the captain asleep beside Beverly. He shook his head, and sighed. *I guess I should've checked. Wonder why the nurse didn't tell me he was still here?*

He walked over a gently shook the captains shoulder. "Captain Picard?"

Jean Luc woke up instantly. "Is she awake?"

"No sir. Not yet. She'll probably be asleep for quite some time yet. Why don't you go to your quarters. I'll call you when she wakes up." John said as reassuringly as possible.

Picard assented, and got up to leave. He released his hold on the hand he still held, and with one last look, headed out the doors. He would go to his quarters, but not to sleep. It would be for a quick shower and change, then up to the bridge. Alpha shift would be starting soon, and he had already slept a couple hours.

* * * * *

The Lamarck was right on schedule, and Picard and the senior officers were almost finished briefing their staff on the situation. A total of 534 dead, all of which consisted of humans and danaans. It seems the alatians were spared serious injury from the quake because they live in the water. And when the tidal waves hit, they just stayed in some underwater cave system. Most of the survivors wanted to stay on Valtus 1, so they were in the process of beaming the healthy ones back down. The injured were being transferred to the Lamarck for convalescence and eventually would end up back on the planet. The Lamarck would now be responsible for helping the colony, but the Enterprise was to stay around a few more days to help with some of the engineering problems.

As the meeting concluded, and officers started to file out, Captain Picard motioned for Dr. Ansarn to stay. "Dr. Ansarn, how is Dr. Crusher doing?"

*Uh oh...well you knew this was coming*

"She's fine captain." John replied, but offered no further information.

The captain waited a second before he realized that was all the doctor was going to say. "Is she awake yet?"

*Might as well just get it over with* "Yes Captain. She woke up a half hour before the briefing." He finished, and mentally braced himself.

"Why the hell didn't you inform me! I could have come down to..."

John interrupted him, "Captain Picard...permission to speak freely sir?"

Picard considered a moment, "Go ahead."

"Beverly didn't want to see you. You are my commanding officer, but she was my friend a long time before that. To be quite frank sir...I am quite aware of your "relationship" with Beverly Crusher. In fact, even when she was still a Howard. You have no idea how you have hurt her, and I really don't blame her for not wanting to see you." John paused a moment to see the impact his words had made.

 Jean Luc Picard was stunned. *Who was this man anyway? And how did he know about...wait a minute...did he know about...no..he couldn't, could he?* Instead of counter-attacking, Picard confirmed part of John's accusations. "Dr. Ansarn, I realized last night the reason for Beverlys abrupt departure. But I still think she overreacted a bit to my forgetting our plans to spend shore leave together. I'm sure she'll understand when I..."

Again, John interrupted him. "You think she left the Enterprise just because you forgot about spending leave with her? Do you know how much trouble she went to arrange the plans she made? Believe me Captain, you don't know Beverly Crusher too well if you think that wasn't enough to make her mad enough to leave. However, the fact being, that wasn't enough to make her leave. Mad as hell, yes. Leave, no."

Jean Luc was confused. "Well then, what made her leave?"

"Seeing you board a shuttle with Nella Darren."

Jean Luc thought he understood before, but now...now was a revelation. "Oh...no wonder she's so mad. But it's not what she thinks. Nella just happened to be on the same shuttle I was. She was part of the team Star Fleet was sending to Telis 3 to set up the weather grid. She and I are old friends, and..."

John held up his hand, "Captain Picard, You don't have to explain anything to me. I figured most of that out already. I just wanted to be sure. I love Beverly, and I want to see her happy. She's deserves that after waiting 25 years."

"Waiting 25 years for what?"

John smiled, "Why, for you of course.

Now, we need to work something out. Beverly isn't going to be as easy to convince of your "innocence" as I was. I don't know if you noticed, but she has a little bit of a temper."

Jean Luc laughed at that, "What do you have in mind doctor?"

* * * * *

 It had been one day since the Lamarck showed up, and everything was working out. Beverly had been released from sick bay the night before, and John had given her strict orders to get some rest. But true to form, Dr. Crusher showed up the next morning for duty.

John greeted her as she entered sick bay, "Good Morning Dr. Crusher. And to what do we owe the honor of your presence here today?"

"And a good morning to you Dr. Ansarn. I seem to recall that there was some sort of medical emergency on a colony around here somewhere. Quite recently in fact. And since I do happen to have some medical training, I thought that I could "help out" here in sick bay." Beverly said with an "innocent" smile upon her lovely face.

"I guess I could overlook you disobeying a direct order from the CMO of the ship (she cocked an eyebrow at him)....for a price of course" John said, trying to sound serious.

"Are you asking for a bribe, sir?" Beverly was having fun now.

"I most certainly am."

"What's your price?"

"I'm having a party in holodeck 2 tonight. Sort of an "end of mission" wind down get together." John tried to act nonchalant as he made his request.

"Get together John? Since when do you ever have "get togethers"?" She eyed him suspiciously.

A big smile crossed his face, and he spread his hands out. "Busted. You know me too well Bev. OK...a blowout. You know I could never just have a small party." He looked at her expectantly, giving her his best puppy dog eyes.

Beverly stared at him a minute. "Alright. I'll come. And don't think giving me the big eye had anything to do with it... Anything in particular I should wear?"

John came over, and put his arm around her shoulder. "You know what they say Bev, "The blues ain't nothin' but a good woman feelin' bad".

"Oh no..." was all she could say.

* * * * *

Jean Luc stood outside the quarters of Beverly Crusher debating whether or not to activate the door chime. He knew he shouldn't be here now, but he just couldn't wait til later. It had been killing him to be away, to talk to her, to tell her how sorry he was, to...

Before he could make up his mind, the door swooshed open and Beverly, not seeing him, ran into him. Jean Luc grabbed her in an effort to keep them from falling in a heap right there in the corridor. Standing firmly again, Jean Luc made no effort to release the hold he had on her waist.

Beverly was momentarily stunned, but soon realized his hands were practically burning into her sides. She shook herself mentally, *Not now Beverly*, and said to him in an even voice, "Do you mind removing your hands?"

He searched her face for a moment, and decided not to wait til later like John had planned. "Yes... I do mind." Not removing his hold on her, the captain turned her around, and "guided" her back through the doors. "We need to talk Beverly"

As soon as the doors closed, Beverly twisted away. *I'll be okay as long as he doesn't touch me* "Do I have choice?"

"Not this time. Beverly, I know why you left the Enterprise. I know I forgot that we were supposed to spend leave together. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I forgot." He looked to see if it was melting any of the ice she had built up.

She listened to his apology, but it didn't affect her. Him forgetting leave had hurt her, but seeing him with Nella Darren had pissed her off. "Thanks for the apology. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a date."

She turned to leave, but he grabbed her arm, spinning her around to face him. "I'm not finished yet. I also know that my forgetting about leave was not the reason you left. You saw me with Nella, and I just wanted to say that..."

Beverly jerked her arm away from him, her temper rising exponentially. "I don't give a damn what you do with your personal life. If you want to..to fuck Nella Darren...well, that's your own business. But when you lie to me about what it is your doing, when we were supposed to do something together, then you can just go to hell Jean Luc Picard."

Jean Luc opened his mouth to explain further, but Beverly turned and fled out the doors before he had a chance to try and stop her. *Damn. That went well.* Jean Luc slowly left Beverly's quarters, and made his way to the holodeck for round two.

Beverly strode down the hall toward the holodeck. She was almost glad that John had roped her into this. It provided the perfect opportunity for an attitude adjustment, and although she used to grumble about going to his bashes, she always ended up having a hell of a good time. Not to mention kill a few million brain cells in the process. *Fine with me. Maybe they'll be the ones with memories of Jean Luc. Like the smell of his cologne when they danced...Stop it! He's an insensitive asshole, and you're better off without him.*

Arriving at the entrance to the holodeck cut off any more thoughts about a certain Starfleet captain. She checked the program to be sure, and entered. As the doors opened, Beverly's senses were assailed by some old, but familiar smells. She sniffed the air. *Yep. John can't have a part without a little herbal smoke. Not to mention alcohol.*

John saw his friend at the entrance, and walked over to meet her. He handed her a drink. "Hope you still drink screwdrivers. It's the real thing. None of that synthehol crap."

Beverly drank the whole thing. "Yep. I still drink em'. Now, what's that smell. Seems familiar to me."

John laughed. "Well, I guess I won't have to get you in the party mood tonight. Come on over here, I was just explaining the finer points of drug deliver methods with Data."

John took her to a table that had most of the senior staff sitting at it. They were in the middle of passing a perfectly rolled white cylindrical object that was on fire (ok, a joint). Beverly had to keep from laughing as Will Riker inhaled, then started to cough.

"Here...give me that Will." And Beverly took it from him, placed it to her mouth, and inhaled. She handed it to John while holding the smoke.

"I see you haven't forgotten. (he took a quick drag, and passed it to Deanna)"

Beverly exhaled. "Some things you never forrget. Now, where can I get a refill."

Riker offered to refill everyones drink. Beverly sat down, and got a chance to look around. It looked like the same Blues & Rock club that they used to frequent back in San Francisco. There was some music in the background, but the band wasn't playing yet. John was probably waiting for everyone to get here first, and have a few drinks (or whatever) before they started. The holodeck was pretty crowded. She noticed people here from all sections. Suddenly, there was a furry hand on her shoulder.

Beverly looked up into the face of the danaan healer. "Mrrrla! I didn't know you would be here." She offered her the seat next to her. "Would you like a drink?"

"Good evening Beverrrly. No thank you, danaans don't drink alcohol. How are you feeling?" Mrrrla asked her friend. She had only seen her for a brief period after she had woke up from her fever.

"Oh...I feel fine. In fact, I'm starting to feel a whole lot better."

John looked around, but didn't see the captain anywhere. Guess I'll just start without him. "I think its time for a little dance music, don't you, Bev?"

"I was wondering when we were going to get to that. Are we going for wild or raunchy tonight?" John had a tendency to pick songs that were...well, shall we say...suggestive. *But they're damn fun to dance to.*.

John got up to leave, "I think...both."

Will returned with the evenings second round. Beverly took hers. "Thanks Will. So, what do you think of John's party?"

A big grin spread across his face, "I haven't been to a party like this... well, let's just say it's been a long time. I'd like to know where he got all the..um...party favors."

"John has his sources."

* * * * *

The people at the table looked up as John went onto the stage. "Is everyone ready for the band? (cheers) You probably don't know it, but I have a liking for late twentieth century earth music. All types...And I have worked on this holodeck program for years adding different types of music. So...let the party begin."

The band members took their places, and began to play. True to his word, John started off with dance music that was both wild and raunchy. Beverly decided it had a good beat, and started to finish her drink. *I definitely need a buzz tonight* she thought.

Unseen by Beverly, Jean Luc had entered the holodeck, and was presently making his way to where she was sitting with the rest of the senior staff. Deanna spotted him first. "Captain, won't you join us?" She offered him an empty seat next to her. Consequently giving him a view of Beverly across the table from him.

For her part, Beverly did not even acknowledge his arrival. She just turned in her chair to observe the dancing, and sucked down the rest of her drink. Realizing she was running on empty again she turned to the table, "Who needs a refill?"

Of the original table members, it appeared that only Will was keeping up with her. "Rum and Coke for me Bev." He handed her his glass.

She turned to leave when another deep voice spoke, "Scotch, neat."

Without looking at him, "Gotcha". And headed off in the direction of the bar.

Deanna and Will looked at one another and thought simultaneously, *Uh Oh*.

* * * * *

Beverly returned to the table with the drinks, and was waylaid by John. "Come on Bev, our song's coming up." She barely had time to put the drinks down before he pulled her away to the dance floor.

Geordi turned to the others, "She's gonna dance to this stuff?"

* * * * *

John had learned a long time ago that he had to program virtual dancers into this program. The reason being that people weren't familiar with the music, and didn't really know how to dance to it. But once they saw others, and had a few drinks (or whatever), most tended to join in. That's when the fun began.

John had introduced a reluctant Beverly to this when they were in med school. However, the dancer in Beverly soon shined through. He found that she liked the freedom to dance how she pleased. *All those repressed sexual desires. Better look out tonight Captain.* A small laugh escaped as the next song began.

Beverly found that she was excited to be here. It had been a long time since she had danced to this stuff. Normally, she wouldn't have indulged in front of people she worked with. *What the hell. I'm not the CMO anymore. Might as well give them an eyeful.* A small laugh escaped as the song began.

'How can I put this in a way so as not 2offend or unnerve

But there's a rumor going all 'round that you ain't Been gettin' served

They say that you ain't u know what in baby who knows how long?

It's hard 4 me 2 say what's right when all I wanna do is wrong

Get off- 23 positions in a one-night stand

Get off- I'll only call u after if u say I can

Get off- let a woman be a woman and a man be a man

Get off- if u want to baby...here I am'

Jean Luc, along with everyone else at the table, were certainly getting an eyeful. Beverly and John were doing some of the most seductive dancing to that song that he had ever seen anyone do (besides Orion slave dancers). But damn him if it wasn't exciting as hell. The captain looked to the other people sitting at the table, and could tell they thought so too.

"I never realized Dr. Crusher was such a...good dancer" geordi uttered the night's understatement.

"You can say that again" Will said as he leered at the red head. Deanna kicked him underneath the table. "Ow!"

* * * * *

Jean Luc was on his fourth scotch. He had just politely turned down the offer of some object that appeared to be smoldering. He had no idea what it was, even though he had seen Beverly and John with one earlier during one of their rare breaks from dancing.

He had not had a chance to talk to Beverly all evening. He didn't like the music that had been playing, but watching Beverly dance was worth it. His thoughts were interrupted by a new band coming on stage. It seemed that Dr. Ansarn was to play. Jean Luc looked around for Beverly, but he hadn't seen her since she last danced.

The band started to play, and Jean Luc decided that this music was totally different from the 'thumping' stuff that was played before. He tried to recall where he had heard it before, when Riker answered the question for him.

"Blues. Now there is some real music."

  * * * *

Beverly returned just in time to see John start his set. She had spent the last several minutes in the bathroom freshening up. Frankly, she was sweating profusely from a combination of dancing and alcohol, and she needed a little bit of a break. She stood on the periphery of the dance floor where she was afforded a good view of the stage. She was content in just relaxing a minute, but was interrupted by a tap on her shoulder.

"Would you care to dance Dr. Crusher?" Data asked her with that innocent expression he always seemed to have.

She contemplated saying 'no', but he continued. "I have been watching all evening, and I think I understand the basics on how to dance to this music."

"I would love to Data."

Unbeknownst to Data, the music that was being played now was a little bit different than before. It took Beverly a few minutes to get him into the correct rhythm. *Good thing Data's a fast study*.

They danced for a couple songs, and were starting to dance to a third, which happened to be a slow song, when they were interrupted. "Mr. Data, do you mind if I cut in?" came a deep resonant voice from behind Beverly.

"No sir," and Data released his partner to the captain.

He took her in his arms, but she stiffened and didn't allow him to pull her too close. "I've been waiting all night to dance with you."

She looked directly at him the first time that evening, "What stopped you?"

Feeling her loosen slightly, he pulled her across the distance that separated them so their bodies were touching. "I've been waiting for an...appropriate song."

Beverly couldn't think straight. He was too close. *Damn him. Why did he have to come over here? Why can't you just leave me alone*.

Jean Luc leaned in close, his lips by her ear. "I've missed you."

Her knees went weak as his warm breath washed over her ear and neck. Moving her head closer she gave in to the urge to smell his cologne. Realizing what she was doing, she abruptly jerked back. But he held tightly, not letting her go. "What the hell are you trying to do to me Jean Luc?" She managed to say, hoping no one else but him could hear her.

He leaned in again, mouth by her ear *God I wish he wouldn't do that*. "Same thing you've always done to me Beverly. What's it like... to be close to someone, to want them...then to have them be with someone else?"

Beverly caught her breath as her heart constricted. Was that what he felt when she was with Odan...Ronin...even Jack? Well, it's not like he's been a monk the last 25 years. "Let me go," she said as she tried to pull away.

Again he held her tightly to him. If she wanted to leave, she'd have to make a scene. This time he looked her in the eye when he spoke to her. "I didn't sleep with her."

Beverly halted her effort to escape his grasp, "What?"

"You left before I had a chance to explain. I didn't go to Telis 3 with Nella Darren. We just happened to be on the same shuttle. She was assigned there to set up the weather grid," he looked to see how his explanation had affected her. *At least she's not trying to pull away anymore.*

It took her a few milliseconds longer to process what he had told her than usual. *He didn't sleep with her...* Further exposition was interrupted as John spoke from the stage. Something he said caught her attention.

"Come on Bev." John was waving her up, and most of the crowd was cheering her on.

It took her a moment to realize what was happening, and she started to shake her head. "Oh no John..."

People around her were gently pushing her up towards the stage.

"You see everyone, along with being an exceptional dancer, Dr. Crusher can also sing. Get up here Bev." She was still trying to get out of it, even though she had already been "pushed" up on the stage.

John leaned over and whispered in her ear, "There's no use fightin' me Bev." He stepped back, and ran his hand over the strings of his guitar.

Beverly was left at the microphone, *Great, might as well get it over with.* She thought for a second, then turned around and told John the song. He smiled in approval, and cued the rest of the band.

Beverly scanned the crowd as the music started, she was looking for one face. Her cue came as she found it. She started to sing looking into his hazel eyes.

'Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around

Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around

Because I don't want to leave you lonely. But you got to make me change my mind

Baby I got your number, oh and I know you got mine

You know that I called you I called too many time

You can call me baby. You can call me anytime

But you got to call me

Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around

Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around

Because I don't want to leave you lonely. But you got to make me change my mind

I don't want no one to squeeze me They might take away my life

I don't want no one to squeeze me They might take away my life

I just want someone to hold me, oh..and rock me through the night

This youthful heart can love you and give you what you need

I said this youthful heart can love you and give you what you need

But I'm too old to go chasing you around wasting my precious energy

Give me one reason to stay here.. yes and I'll turn right back around

Give me one reason to stay here..oh and I'll turn right back around

Because I don't want to leave you lonely. But you got to make me change my mind

Baby just give me one reason..oh give me just one reason why

Baby give me one reason. Give me just one reason why I should stay.

Because I told you that I LOVED YOU and there ain't no more to say'

Jean Luc was mesmerized as he listened to Beverly's voice. He had no idea she could sing. It was a moment before the words she was singing started to register. She looked at him as she sang, it was like she was singing the song for him. Was she trying to tell him something?

When she finished, the crowd erupted in wild applause. Jean Luc made his way toward the stage, and up to her. *I'll give you a reason*. And there, in front of everybody, the Captain of the Enterprise pulled the "CMO" into a passionate kiss. This time, she didn't try to get away. The couple were barely aware as the decibel level rose significantly.

* * * * *

Beverly was surprised at first, Jean Luc kissing...in public. But coherent thought was lost as her heart pounded so loud she couldn't hear herself any longer. Reluctantly, Jean Luc broke the kiss, and looked into her eyes. "Come on. I think that was enough of a public display for this evening, don't you?" He took her by the hand, and led her off the stage.

Another song started, and Jean Luc turned to her "Would you care to dance?"

This time she took him by the hand, "In your quarters." And led him out of the holodeck.

* * * * *

No conversation was attempted as they made their way to the captain's quarters. Once inside Jean Luc asked her "Was my reason good enough?"

She came forward, and ran her hand down his chest. A shiver ran down his spine at the contact. "I think I'll need more than one 'reason'."

No more words, no more excuses, no more talk...Jean Luc enfolded Beverly in his arms, and kissed her. Soft at first, than with more fervor. He snaked his tongue out, and she happily opened her mouth to receive him. They were contented to taste each other at first, but he soon left her mouth to trail hot kisses around her neck to her ear. He gently grabbed a lobe with his teeth which elicited a low moan from Beverly's throat. He smiled at the response, and trailed soft bites down her throat to her breast, nibbling through the fabric.

For her part, Beverly was helpless in the hands of the man she had fought against loving for so long. His kisses electrified her nerves, and the hand he had placed between her legs was rubbing an ache she had had for years.

Jean Luc could feel her need as evidenced by the hot moisture working its way through the fabric of her pants to his hand. He raised his head, and captured her lips again. Then, he turned her around, exposing the back of her neck to his attack.

Beverly moaned out loud, and ground her rear into Jean Luc's hardness as he kissed and bit the back of her neck. She reached back, and with her hand rubbed the length of his shaft through his pants. It was his turn to moan now.

A devilish thought occurred to Beverly, and she broke free of Jean Luc's hold. He was surprised at the abrupt disconnection, and breathed out "Beverly..."

She held a finger to her lips, and started to unbutton her shirt. All the buttons undone, she just left it open to allow him to see the skin of her stomach, and bra. Then she undid the fasteners of the pants she wore. Slowly, she slid them off, along with her underwear. She looked up to see his eyes burning with lust and desire, but she wasn't finished yet.

She removed the rest of her clothes. Now, completely naked, she approached him. He went to grab her, but again she waved him off. She knelt down if front of him, and rubbed him through his pants. She reached up with her other hand, and undid the fasteners enough to free his engorged member from its confines. She took a second to look at him. It was everything she remembered, long, thick, and delicious.

She flicked her tongue across the tip causing it to jump slightly at the stimulation. Then she slid her mouth over the head and as far as she could go down the shaft, licking and sucking every inch. Jean Luc wound his hands in her red hair as his head rolled back on his shoulders. While the woman on her knees in front of him did magical things. He knew he wouldn't be able to take much more of this. He tried to indicate to her to pull back, but she just kept sliding those luscious lips up and down.

He cried out to her in desperation "Beverly..please.."

She decided that she had "tortured" him enough, and pulled back enough to look up at him from her prone position with an impish smile on her face. He pulled her up by the hands, and kissed her hard on the mouth as his hand grabbed her breast. Then in one swift movement, he lifted her up into his arms, and carried her into the bedroom.

He placed her on the bed, and made short work of the rest of his clothes. He laid half way on top of her, his mouth kissing its way across her shoulder down to her bare breasts. Once there, he spent equal time sucking, kissing, biting, and kneading them. He tongue continued its journey south, trailing over the curves of her abdomen, through the forrest of auburn curls, til it found the folds of moisture between the long muscled legs.

Beverly arched herself up against the object of her joy, but Jean Luc held her in place as he licked. He was going to make her squirm with just as much pleasure as she had given him. He placed one finger, then two inside her. Beverly moaned in pleasure, and again tried to move in a grinding rhythm. Jean Luc prevented her again. Frustrated at not being able to move, "Jean Luc..please."

He looked up at her from his position between her legs, and smiled. "Please... Please what Beverly?"

She hooked her leg around him, and with a weighted maneuver (courtesy of Worf's Mok Bar classes) she rolled him over to where he was beneath her. His member was pressing against the inside of her leg, and she moved slightly to where it was at the entrance of her heat. With a swift move, she drove herself down onto him. Both gasped at the same time. He from the shear pleasure of being where had wanted to be for a very long time. Her from the fact that it had been quite awhile since she had been with someone. And the last time she had had someone this large was him all those years ago.

She moved slowly at first, not wanting to go too fast. Jean Luc reached up, and placed his hands on her waist, helping to lift her with each thrust. Beverly leaned down to kiss him, her breasts pressing against his chest. Jean Luc took the opportunity to roll her over. Inside her still, he began to thrust hard and deep. He could feel the need to release becoming strong, and hoped that he could last. When he got to the point where he thought he was going to explode, Beverly cried out to him as her insides tightened around him rhythmically. With her orgasm, he made one last deep thrust, spilling himself into her.

He collapsed on top of her, and rested for what seemed like an eternity before he came to some sort of consciousness. He slid off her, and enfolded her into his arms. Beverly laid her head on his chest, and listened to the slightly elevated heart rate. She ran her hand through the soft hairs found there.

There were so many things he wanted to say, but wasn't sure how. Then he remembered that night 25 years before. "You will be here in the morning"

It was part command, part question. Beverly knew why he had asked. "Yes, I'll be here in the morning." And she placed a kiss on his chest.

He placed a finger under her chin and lifted her face. "What about the morning after that?"

She smiled at him, "Are you making me and offer Captain?"

"Yes, it seems that we are in need of a new Chief Medical Officer, and I hear that you come highly recommended. And..."

Her eyes grew wide, and she interrupted him . "What about John?"

"He has been re-assigned to head a research team at Star Fleet Medical. Something to do with neuron regeneration. I hear he has wanted that for a long time."

He didn't finish what he was about to ask earlier until she had a chance to absorb what he had already said.

"Oh, that's great. He's been interested in neuron regeneration since medical school, and..." She looked at him, and cocked her eyebrow. "And what Jean Luc?"

Innocently, "What?"

She rolled on top of him, and gave his shoulders a short push with her hands. "You were about to ask me something else before I interrupted you? Out with it Jean Luc."

"Oh that. I was just going to say that there was an opening in my bed at the moment, and I was wondering..."

Beverly hit him in the arm "What! Jean Luc Picard you can go to..."

He quickly cut her off by pulling her down to him, and kissing her. He released her briefly. "I love you Beverly. I have for a very long time. And the position I'm offering is a permanent one."

Her eyes widened at his admission. And the implication of the offer...this time she pulled him to her, and kissed him. Releasing him briefly, "I love you, Jean Luc. I have ever since San Francisco all those years ago. And I accept your offer."

This time neither one released the other.
