The Round Robin stage # 1 :[ playing :12 ; next stage : 6 ]
The 12 participating nations have been grouped into 2 pools of 6 teams
each .Each team plays every other team in the pool once ,thus each team plays
5 matches in the league stage. This means there are 30 exciting matches
in the group stage.
The Super Sixes : [ playing : 6 ; next stage : 4 ]
The top 3 teams from each pool qualify for this next round.Thus , 6 teams
have to pack their bags and go home (except England as they are the hosts.)
This second round is also a sort of a round robin with 9 matches.
Each of the 3 teams from pool A play each team of pool B once . This is
explained as follows:
Suppose teams from pool A are : team P , team Q and team R and that from
pool B are : team 1 , team 2 , team 3 .Now team P plays 3 matches in this round.
It plays with team 1 ,team 2 and team 3 .Similarly , teams Q and R play 3
matches each against teams 1 , 2 and 3.
Now, 4 of the best placed teams make it to the semi -final stage.
This means that 4 teams from P , Q , R , 1 , 2 , 3 qualify. Two teams
are out now. Thus it could be 3 from 1 group or 2 from each group .
Unlike world cup 96 , 4 teams from 1 group will not make the semis
(India,Srilanka , Australia , West Indies made it in 96.)
This system has been adopted instead of the quarter final format to avoid
the knock out of a good team on account of one bad day as happened in 96
(S.Africa v/s W.Indies).Here each team has a chance to come back as it
plays 3 matches . Here Run Rates could well decide the semi finalists.

THE SEMI -FINALS :[ playing : 4 ; finals : 2 ]
This is obviuosly a knock -out stage . There are 2 matches at this stage and
only 2 teams can go through to the finale of the World Cup 99.
Here the team that tops the super six group plays the team that ended 4th ,
and the 2nd and 3rd placed teams make up the 2nd semi final.
THE FINALS :
There can be only 1 champion side . So it's gonna be a few runs and wkts here
and there that will make the difference .
Thus , totally there are 42 matches to be played in the world cup 99 .
