Article Title: AW's Joe Barbara Shares His Diet & Exercise Plan

Joe Barbara(Joe,AW)wasn't born beautiful-he works hard to maintain his well-sculpted body.

The 6-ft. 3-in.,20-year-old actor keeps hos muscular, 195-lb. physique fit and trim by sticking to a sensible diet and spending five to six days a week in the gym.

"When you start losing weight and you start seeing a difference in your body, that's your motovation," Joe points out. "You don't want that to stop-you want to see the improvements continue. Plus, you feel that if you stop, you've wasted all that time working so hard, and you don't feel as good about yourself."

On those days when he'd rather loaf than clock reps, Joe says he quickly gets his motivation back by imagining the multitude of shirtless scenes, I was pretty nervous-and you're never totally comfortable with it," he admits.

Joe weight-trains at the Mid-City Gym in Manhattan with the help of his personal trainer(and good friend)Paul Sampson.

"I can bench press up to 225 lbs. and curl up to 110 lbs.," he says proudly.

Joe trains with Pail both for safety and motivation. "It's good to have someone to 'spot' you at all times, so you don't have to worry about dropping something on your neck, "he explains. "And if someone is there with you, you can work each muscle to the point of exhaustion. It's those last few reps that really help you make the gains. If you don't have someone with you, you can't do that, and you don't get the most out of your workout.

"I do three to four exercises per body part, three to four sets of excercise and the eight to 12 reps each set, "he says. "I mostly use free weights, but there's one shoulder press that I do on a machine. And sometimes I'll get bored with, say tricep extensions, so I'll it and go to a machine where there;s a pulley.

I also do about 50 or 60 pushups before a scene, "he reveals. "I eveb do some curls at the side of the set. It's a temporary blood pump to look huge."

His washboard abs don't come from traditional sit-ups. Instead, Joe does what he coins, "hanging knee raises." He hangs from a bar and lifts his legs parallel to the ground. For his legs, Joe usually has Paul spot him while he does squats with the free weights. Occasionally he varies that by using a leg press machine. And he runs on a treadmill to improve his cardiovascular strength.

But Joe got "off the treadmill" while he was staring on Broadway in the musical Grease! "All I had to do was the Born to Hand Jive number and that's enough cardio for one day," he laughs, adding that he was actually appearing six days a week with two shows on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Joe follows a low-fat diet, beginning with a large bowl of wheaties in the mroning. He eats a lot of tuna fish, chicken, turkey, and pasta, and occasionally treats himslef to beef, but he steers away from junk foods. "I've also been drinking one bottle of Ultra Fuel," he adds. "It's one of those drinks that give you a boost of energy before a workout.

"I know that I'm big enough now," says the actor, who has been weight-training seriously for the past seven years. "So it's just a matter of staying in shape. You just need to maintain the good and healthy balance between excercise and diet."

Article Title:

Bye-Bye, Broadway

For Joseph Barbara, Grease! isn't the word

S

ure he'll miss the bright lights, the screaming fans and the private dressing room. But then again, admits Joseph Barbara, "Sleep is good."

Sleep is pretty hard to come by when you spend long days as a soap star and long nights as a Broadway star. That's just what Barbara did for five months beginning in April. The ambitious actor, whose day job is playing Joe on ANOTHER WORLD, sacrificed his beauty rest (not that you need any, Joe) and his social life to meet the grueling demands of both a frontburner soap storyline and the lead role in the hit Broadway musical Grease!.

But after a while, as you might imagine, the schedule began to get to him. "I knew it would be tough," he says, "but I never really thought about how it hard it was going to be."

So last month-much to the dismay of the show's producers-box-office friendly Barbara turned in his leather Danny Zuko jacket and climbed back full-time into the sensible suspenders and smart loafers favored by his police-detective alter ego.

"I'm looking forward to living a normal life again, Barbara says, smiling. He's just come back from a vacation in Aruba and, at the moment, isn't thinking about the future: "I haven't really given much thought to what I am going to do next."

Not that he lacks options. The producers of the musical have left the doors open for his return, and he's already bucking for a chance to audition for a role in Grease 3, the movie-if it ever gets made. No matter what comes about, he'll surely be ready to take it on. After all, having moonlighted on Broadway, he's learned more than just how to belt out a killer rendition of "Summer Nights."

"You can fit a lot in your life when you have to," Barbara says. "I should use my time that wisely always."

This Article I just received, from Cathy. Thank You Very Much, Cathy!

This Article is from Soap Opera Digest

When Joseph Barbara landed the role of private eye Joe Carlino on AW the thought of being in the same room with his co-star gave him hives.

Originally, Carlino was supposed to share his scenes-and apartment space-with a cat called Serpico. "The name Serpico was perfect for Joe's cat," Head writer Carolyn Culliton relates,"because the character in the film Serpico was an honest cop just like Joe was before he went into the P.I. business."

But a cat-trasrophe emerged: Barbara is allergic to felines. "I was willing to try out certain cats, "Barbara laughs, though other atempts to share air space with a four-legged furball were disatrous. "I've been to people's houses who have cats, and my eyes water and my nose runs."

The solution: An invisible Sepico will be playing a perpetual game of cat-and-mouse in Joe's apartment."Serpico is always going to be under the couch,"Quips Culliton. "He's there, but he's just hiding. He's an anti-social cat."
