A 10-men Omonia Nicosia side
only managed to salvage a point from a very determined Ethnikos Achnas side as
the current league leaders dropped two crucial points in Achnas.
The first half shot off with both sides going for the early goal with the slight
majority of the best chances falling to the league leaders, Omonia Nicosia.
After one of many dangerous bursts by Ethnikos Achnas, Omonia Nicosia eventually
took the lead against the run of play after some good work by Vesko Mihajlovic
found Rauffmann who saw his shot clatter off the post but was happy to see Akis
Joachim racing in to swoop in the rebound in the 44th minute to give Omonia a
1-0 half time lead.
The second half saw both sides again in search of the goal with chances being
missed at both ends. In the 72nd minute, Omonia Nicosia were reduced to 10-men
after the goal scorer, Akis Joachim, was sent off for a second bookable offense
after he brought down Georgiou and the referee, Michael, didn’t hesitate to
send the Omonia player off. Ethnikos with the one man advantage stepped up the
tempo and eventually equalized after some great work from Georgiou lead to
Christos Poyiatzis grabbing the equalizer with a sweetly struck shot that gave
the Omonia keeper, Yiallouris, no chance.
Since the equalizing goal, Ethnikos missed the best chances although Rauffmann
always looked dangerous for the visitors as he forced Marios Kyriakou into some
life saving saves for his side.
After 11 minutes injury time the game finished 1-1 with Omonia Nicosia now
having to see what AEL Limassol and Anorthosis Famagusta are going to do in
their games.
