MAHATHIR telah mati! Hanya mayatnya yang berjalan.
    Maka bersedialah untuk membina semula Malaysia dari puing-puing kehancuran yang ditinggalkan oleh Mahathir. Kehancuran ekonomi yang dihasilkan oleh beliau melalui amalan kronisme and nepotisme dapat kita saksikan di mana-mana.
    Ada yang berhujah bahawa Mahathir pernah menghasilkan pertumbuhan ekonomi yang luar biasa dan beliau patut dipuji kerana itu. Hakikatnya ialah beliau menyemai benih-benih kehancuran sejak awal regimnya. Beliau menggasir perlembagaan, menghakis kebebasan kehakiman, merosakkan pasukan polis dan menjahit mulut wartawan. Hampir dua dekad rakyat Malaysia membiarkan Mahathir itu semua, kononnya ia adalah harga yang harus dibayar untuk pertumbuhan ekonomi yang luar biasa. Jelas itu semua adalah satu penipuan. Apabila krisis ekonomi tiba, Mahathir menyalahkan orang lain. Dan sebahagian besar dari krisis itu berpunca dari dasar-dasar ekonomi yang laksanakan oleh Mahathir.
    Rakyat telah sedar dan Malaysia telah bersedia untuk memasuki zaman baru. Bahkan belum pernah dalam sejarah Malaysia berlaku satu gelombang kesesadaran seperti yang disaksikan sekarang. Dan manifestasi kesedaran itu adalah perhimpunan rakyat di Dataran Merdeka pada 20 September 1998 dan protes rakyat yang berterusan terhadap regim Mahathir.
    Persoalannya sekarang apakah wahana atau vehicle rakyat Malaysia untuk memasuki zaman baru tersebut. Rakyat tertanya-tanya apakah bahtera yang akan digunakan oleh Anwar Ibrahim dan Gerakan Reformasi untuk membawa rakyat ke pantai masyarakat madani.
    Selama ini Reformasi adalah gerakan rakyat. Reformasi telah menggerakkan rakyat untuk menuntut keadilan dan pembinaan semula Malaysia di atas prinsip-prisip keadilan, demokrasi dan masyarakat madani. Perobahan sosial dan sikap telah berlaku. Yang diperlukan sekarang adalah perubahan dan transformasi politik. Segala cita-cita Reformasi tidak akan berjaya tanpa perubahan politik. Dan untuk menjayakan itu Gerakan Reformasi memerlukan bahtera politik.
    Saya masih teringat sebagai anak remaja yang baru tamat sekolah tingkatan enam menghadiri muktamar Abim buat pertama kalinya, tahun 1975. Anwar Ibahim ketika itu dalam tahanan ISA di Kemunting. Ucapan dasar beliau sebagai presiden Abim di baca oleh Ustaz Fadzil Noor. Dan tema ucapan tersebut adalah "Perteguh Tekad, Perjelas Wadah."
    Nah sekarang Anwar Ibrahim perlu mengemukakan wadah yang jelas. Rakyat dan singa-singa reformasi sedang menunggu-menunggu isyarat dari beliau.--24 Feb 1999

MAHATHIR is dead. Only his corpse is walking.
    So be ready to rebuild Malaysia from the ruins Mahathir has left in his wake. Everywhere we turn, we see economic wreckage, the consequence of his cronyism and nepotism.
    Some argue that Mahathir ought to be praised, crediting him for the extraordinary economic growth Malaysia has experienced. But the reality is that he had begun to plant the seeds of destruction even in the early days of his regime. He has lacerated the constitution, whittled away at judicial independence, mangled the police force and gagged journalists. For two decades the people listened to his excuses and gave in. He told them these were the necessary costs of economic development. It turns out now that he is a cheat. When economic crisis came, he started pointing his finger at others. The truth is that most of the blame must fall on the policies he has followed.
    The people have woken up and Malaysia is ready to enter a new phase in its history. In fact, never have Malaysians been so roused by a consciousness of the need for change. Witness the multitudinous gathering at Dataran Merdeka on September 20, 1998, and the continuing protest against Mahathir's regime.
    But how will Malaysia transport itself into the new age? The people are asking what mode of conveyance will Anwar Ibrahim and the Reform Movement use to carry them to the land of civil society.
    Reformasi, as it stands now, is a people's movement. It has moved the hearts of the people so that they are now demanding justice and the rebuilding of Malaysia on the principles of justice, democracy and civil society. Social and attitudinal changes have happened. The need now is for political transformation. None of the aspirations of reformasi will be attained without political change. And in order to bring that about, the movement needs a political vehicle.
    I was a teenager fresh from Form Six when I attended my first Abim convention in 1975. Anwar Ibrahim was then an ISA detainee at Kemunting. His policy speech as Abim president was read by Ustaz Fadzil Noor. The theme of that speech was "Strengthen the Resolve, Show the Platform."
    Anwar Ibrahim must now declare his platform. The lions of reformasi and the rest of the people await his signal.
