The 8th. Battalion was formed in Brisbane on the 8th August 1966 and only 9RAR was to follow later.

The VIETNAM war was barely 2 years old as far as Australia sending full Battalions to assist South Vietnam and the Government of the day had committed more troops to this war.

The writer of this page would like to consider himself as a formation member of 8RAR as I joined the battalion in September 1966 before the units actually moved to the new ENOGGERA barracks.

The Battalion left for MALAYSIA in 1967 and returned in 1969 and then to VIETNAM in late 1969 to late 1970. Later 8RAR & 9RAR combined to form 8/9 BATTALION ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT and continued this way untill it was disbanded on 30 JUNE 1997, over 30 years later.

This page is not meant to be the history of the battalion and may never will be, however, PAGE 3 is dedicated to those of you "WHO REMEMBER".
Anyone who was a member of 8 RAR , 8/9 RAR or who was attached to, or supported the battalion during it's time is invited to submit their memories.
