LEAVING WITH THE ADVANCE PARTY FOR MALAYSIA.!!!

Does anyone remember leaving Brisbane airport in August, 1967 in the QANTAS 707 and arriving in Singapore on a balmy evening, being transferred by bus to a stopover camp somewhere in Singapore, sneaking out of camp early the next morning to exchange some Aussie $ with the Locals, then a bus?? or truck?? ride to TERENDAK.

WHO REMEMBERS?? ----- MAJOR PECK and his ambushes and what about LT. LAUDER and his preoccupation with the Stockmarket & Share prices. There were also the shared experiences, GOOD, BAD & HORRIBLE with 8 RAR. and the "GINGER BEERs", not to mention RON MEAGHER.

EXERCISE SAFE HAVEN AT SHOALWATER BAY 1980

WHO REMEMBERS??--- The Transport Sergeant who crashed his Army Motorcycle at Shoalwater during the exercise and being Medivaced back to Brisbane.

Spending 4 months as a "Guest" at 1 Mil. Hospital.

GOING ON CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS IN 1966 AND BEING TOLD YOU'R NO LONGER WITH 8 RAR.

WHO REMEMBERS ??. The 8 RAR formation member of Support Co. and the other Diggers who went on holidays in December 1966 , only to be told that after the break that they were to join 7 RAR and to "Front up" at CANUNGRA.

The Dog at the opening ceremony at 0800 hrs. on 8th.AUGUST 1966.

MARCHING INTO C COY. AFTER O.C.S. GRADUATION, NOT HAVING TIME TO UNPACK, AND BEING AIRLIFTED IN A C130 TO THE KIMBERLEY'S

Who remembers ??.. Exercise APPIAN WAY in '73 and 8 RAR's efforts against the SASR and other Specialist units.

Returning from a "full on" combat readiness course on the day 8 and 9 RAR amalgamated.

CHRISTMAS 1973 and no leave credits... Copping Battalion DUTY OFFICER 1DAY IN 3.

The Battalion's assistance to residents during the Brisbane floods of 1974, the rotting substances and all that mud.

Last but not least the Battle Hardened NCO's who were of great assistance during my career.

THE LARGE "D" LINK BELONGING TO THE ANCHOR CHAIN GOING MISSING DURING THE TRIP FROM AUS. TO SINGAPORE.

WHO REMEMBERS ??.. Arriving in SINGAPORE harbour on the "SIR WANKALOT" and being quizzed by the officers about the missing item. The crew of the ship blaming 8 RAR diggers for its disappearance .

The 2 Digs (who shall remain nameless) who actually saw some of the crew throw it overboard into about three miles of water off the coast of TIMOR 4 nights earlier. A diary entry reads " D hook in 3 miles of water 27/9/1967 "

Standing outside the RAP with 100 others on the day we were to go bush and the Sergeant dressing us down and calling us wimps for trying to get out of going into the scrubb , when, one bloke spewed on the Sgt's boots, one bolted for the toilets and another simply fainted.

Food poisoning was to blame ,but the investigating officer could find nothing wrong in the Mess.

A diary entry of 15/3/1968.. Got back from the pictures to find "Danzie" walking around the canteen with only his dog-tags for company, his mates had disappeared.

SPENDING YOUR 21st. BIRTHDAY IN THE BUSH IN SOUTH VIETNAM

Who Remembers ??.. Celebrating their 21st 4 or 5 days late after a re-supply and the first lot of mail since commencing the Op. The birthday cake sent from AUS. in a tin and someone declaring " You cant celebrate a 21st without having a proper toast". Sgt. Bob Hunter was strict on no booze in the bush, but some enterprising person managed to find a bottle of Bacardi. No-one knows where it came from, but it couldn't have been from 8 RAR, because they would not have parted with it. The appropriate toasts were performed with warm water mixed with Bacardi and pieces of cake.

TWO PLATOONS OF REGS. MARCHING OUT OF INGLEBURN AND BEING FIRST TO ARRIVE AT 8 RAR

Who Remembers ?? Arriving at Enoggera in July 1966 only to find we were the only ones there, No officers ,No NCOs ,just us.

A week or two later a Second Lt. arrived and then Lt. Col. Langtry, so then 8RAR had a Commanding Officer, a Platoon Commander and somewhere in between two platoons of diggers.

Gradually the battalion was strengthened by ex 1 RAR blokes and hoardes of National Servicemen to fill the ranks.

Who Remembers ?? Exercise BARRA WINGA at Shoalwater Bay and how the platoon from 8 RAR was picked to go.. .. The person (Nameless)on Orderly room duty one night just happened to come across the list and noticed most of his mates were on the list but not him,so he simply wrote in his and another diggers name and thats how we got to go on exercise Barra Winga.

Who remembers some of the names from those days?.

Clive Mitchell-Taylor.Barry Canton. Ross Murie. "Jack" Hammer. Hans Vanswol. "Zac" Sady.

Being transferred to 3 RAR but never forgetting the time spent with the "GREY EIGHT.

Who remembers ..Coming back off "Barra Winga" going to the Club & being told it was shut.

Seeing Lt Cox standing on a chair with a rope around his neck in the foyer.

He had closed the Bar because three ,old WW11 & Korean Veterans from 1 BOD , who were standing at the bar refused to salute him.

He was saved by the Adjutant, who told the crowd to, "hang him". They let him down after that.

He must hold the record for the most amount of "Duty Officer" ever to be accumulated by any Subby in the Australian Army.
