Dear Eleanor:
My  husband  and I live in the house where I  was
raised.   I feel fortunate that most of my neighbors
are people I grew up with.  One neighbor is a very
good friend.  We've known each other since child-
hood.  She's in bad shape physically and financial-
ly, and does not drive.  The  grandkids  she  raised
still live with her.  Neither of them has a car.

The 21-year-old grandson walks three miles  to and
from work every day, rain or shine. On some days I
drop my grandson off at school,  within
half a mile
of where my neighbor's son works. I offered to give
the young man a ride on those days when I'm going
that direction anyway. My husband finds this wrong.
He says no one would approve if  he  offered to give
                           the 18-year-old granddaughter a ride.

This young man is  the  same  age  as  my  grandkids
(who I wish had the  oomph to  walk  anywhere).   I
don't  know  why  it's any different from when I take
his grandmother shopping or to the bank.    My  hus-
band and I have been married for 30 years  and have
no trust issues.  He says  it  has  nothing  to  do  with
trust.  It's just not right.  I'm confused.  What do you
                            say?
                                                                                                            M

Dear M:
                  Huh?  Wha'?

By the way, it's "reared," not "raised."  Corn  and hogs  are
                  "raised."

HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE:

Remember, if you don't want to receive any more of this inane crap,
just hit your "Reply" button and type in the subject line, "GET THESE
TABLOID HEADLINES OUT OF MY LIFE AND FUCK OFF!"

But remember also, you have to spell and punctuate the message
exactly as it appears above €“ without quotation marks, and without
that redundant "Re: " that appears in so many subject lines €“ or you
will keep getting this shit!  ("Cut and paste" won't work, either.  We
have a special filter to detect that.)

Don't forget!  Readers interested in intellectual dissection of

Dear! Eleanor!
Something's amiss with your culinary advice  regarding boil-
ed peanuts. To the true Southern gourmet palate, "berled goo-
bers" are a delight,  and your description needs further expla-
nation.  The  shells  do not fall off in the boiling  unless  they
are already cracked or split.  Shelling them while rocking on
the porch with a friend or two is part of the sloppy, salty fun
as one tosses the shells out in the yard  (or  into the compost
bin,  if you must).  And the skins are simply part  of  the  en-
joyment to consume,  neither tough  nor  particularly  chewy.
Methinks your boiled peanut dining was with shamefully un-
dercooked legumes. Come further South for a superior snack
experience,  although, sadly,  fresh cob corn is nowhere to be
                            found here.
                                                              Connie Harbeson, Pascagoula, Florida
Dear Connie:
Thank you.  Perhaps my Editor and I did experience "shameful
undercooking"  at a fast foodery  in Bowling Green, Ky.   All  I
can add is his later report to me:  "I gave them to my wife,  and
she wouldn't have them.  So I gave them to  my  secretary,  and
she wouldn't have them.  So I gave them  to  my  cats  and  dog,
                          and they wouldn't have them."

The sports:
American League baseball's Cleveland Indians de-
cided to change their name  –  but  to  what?   The
Naps? . . . President Frump called the move the la-
test example of "cancel culture." . . . Vanderbilt U-
niversity's Sarah Fuller, 21,  became the first girl/-
woman to score in a "Power Five"  (whatever that
is)   college  football  game  by  kicking two extra
points in her team's 42-17 loss to Tennessee  – but
what does that 17 tell you?   That's  right!   Vandy
had a field goal; and it was kicked by one Pierson
Cooke, not by Sarah; the 38 yards was "out of her
range" (and she was not the first girl or woman to
score in a college football game).
. . . College foot-
ball's Rose Bowl next New Year's Day was mov-
ed from Pasadena,  California,  to  Dallas,  Texas.
. . . The National Football League will invite vac-
cinated health care workers to the Super Bowl.

Dear Eleanor:
I've heard that boiled peanuts are healthful and
really good for you.  What about it?

Fast Food Fanatic in Bowling Green, Ky.
Dear Fastfan:
The problem with boiled peanuts  is  that  you
cannot  eat  them.  In the cooking, nearly half
the shells are cooked off.  The skins of the un-
derlying beans are  so  tough  that they cannot
be  chewed.  And so are the skins of the beans
left in shells even though the shells themselves
have been softened to edible. You want health-
y,  go back to corn on the cob  (hard to find  at

Quotation of the week:

Quotations of the Wheat (Simon said):

"Dear Eleanor  last week  asked me to answer a letter from a 60-year-

old man 'Embarassed' by his 'inadequate endowment.'  My first ques-

tion to the guy is, do you have a tongue?  Next I would direct him to

Marcy Sugar & Kathy Mitchell's answer,  in  their  'Annie's Mailbox'

column, in which they pointed out that the organ that matters most to

women is 'the one between the ears.' Finally just imagine yourself  as

a young, powerful, good-looking, rich white boy,  like  me.  It's all in

 the self-confidence."

Dog of the weekcollie
Though Lassie  and most famous collie
dogs are orangish in color,  the name is
said to derive from colly black,  an  an-
cient English spelling  of  "coal  black";
and  the black-and-white  Welsh  sheep-
dog is considered a collie. It's a herding
dog.  Subbreeds include also the border
collie and the toy collie.

Borf 's weekly BONUS:
Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com declared  "pandemic"  the word of
the year. . . .
Oxford Languages, publisher of the Oxford English Diction-
ary,
declined to choose a word of the year, citing overwhelming changes
to the way people use English amid the pandemic  –  a word whose use is
up 57,000 per cent this year  (it's an old word, but what's wrong with "epi-
demic"?). . . .
But Oxford did  choose "bushfire,"  "acquittal,"  "covid-19,"
"lockdown,"  "social distancing,"  "Black Lives Matter,"  "cancel culture,"
"BIPOC,"  "mail-in,"  "Belarusian,"  "moonshot,"  "net zero"  and  "super-
spreader"  as  words  of the year. . . .  Donald Trump was reported to have
raised $170 million in campaign funds since Election Day. . . .
The Austri-
an town  Fucking,  across the border from Germany's Petting,  changed its
name  to  Fugging. . . .  California Governor Gavin Newsom again denied
parole to Leslie Van Houten,  who has been in jail and prison for 51 years
now. .  .  .  Actor Elliot Page,  formerly known as Ellen Page,  came out as
"trans." .  .  .  Kamala Harris confirmed that her husband will take the title
"Second Gentleman"  if and when she becomes the country's  first  female
Vice President.

DISCUSSION GROUP:

Don't forget!  Readers interested in intellectual dissection of
important current events are invited to attend the  Weekly  World
News Round Table at the offices of Borf Books  outside Browns-
ville, Kentucky,  just after church every Sunday.   Guest speakers
lined up for meetings in the near future will include
Georgia Gov-
ernor Brian Kemp.
