Song rehearsed by the Hillbilly Blues Band tobe sung at the memorial
service for Marshall Hornback at Nolin Dam:
C-H-I-C-K-E-N

In a little country schoolhouse where the children used to go,
There went a little fellow that they all called Ragtime Joe;
One day the teacher asked the class to spell a certain bird;
The bird, it was a chicken, and they could not spell the word.

So the teacher called on Ragtime Joe to spell the word for them;
He did not hesitate a bit; this is how that he began:
C - That's the way to begin;
H - That's the next letter in;
 I  - That is the third;
C -  Season up the bird;
K -  Fill it in;
E  -  Gettin' near the end:
C - H - I - C - K - E -N,  that 'ere's the way to spell CHICKEN.

Here's how the Red Clay Ramblers sang it (you can hear this one).

And here's how the McGee Brothers sang it (hear this, too).

You will note that the McGee Brothers called  the  schoolchildren
darkies, and Ragtime Joe, in particular, a nigger.   Here is another
version written by a listener.

N - That's the first letter, N;
 I -  It fits right in;
G -  Sounds good to me;
G -  Another G for free;
E  -  You've got this far;
R  -  Now SuperStar . . .

N-I-G-, G-E-R:  That 'ere's the way ta spell NIGGER.
                                                                                            [Tabloid Headlines]

The name comes from a travelers' hospice  on  the

Dear Eleanor:

                            I came home early from work Friday to the unexpected
                            sound of the vacuum cleaner running in my 12-year-old
                            son’s room. Thinking that perhaps this was a  sign of the
                            apocalypse  – my son cleaning his room without my nag-
                            ging – I burst in and caught him with his pants down and
                            the hose attached to his, well, you know.   He froze like a
                            deer  in the headlights;  and,  after picking my jaw up off
                            the floor, I mumbled something stupid like  "Excuse  me"
                            and walked out and hid in my room.   He left to go to his
                            dad's for the weekend.  He'll be home tomorrow night af-
                            ter school and I don't know what to say to him.  Actually
                            do I have to say anything to him,  or can I just act as if it
                            never happened?
                                                                                                            Hosed

Dear readers:
                            The letter above actually was written to Dear Prudence at
                            Slate,  and I cannot improve on Pru's reply.  Here it is!

                            I am sincerely hoping  the  Dyson  company  doesn't  see
                            your  letter  and come  up  with  a  new  line  of  vacuums
                            guaranteed  to  suck  the  living  daylights  out of the user.
                            First,  you may want to pick up a copy of  Portnoy’s Com-
                            plaint.    Let’s just say the liver scene should reassure you
                            that young men have always been creative  when it comes
                            to relief.   Normally I agree with you,  Mom,  that backing
                            away quickly is the right path to take when  stumbling  up-
                            on such an uplifting scene.   But  I'm  worried  about the a-
                            mount of suction your son could be applying to his private
                            parts  and the potential for gunking up the machine’s filter.
                            I think this situation calls for  a  man-to-man  talk.  I  hope
                            you have the kind of relationship  where  you can tell your
                            ex about this and you both can laugh. Then your  son's  fa-
                            ther can have a good-humored talk  in  which  he  explains
                            that  there are lots of ways to accomplish his goal,  but  it's
                            a good idea to keep the household appliances out of it.

LETTERS to the EDITOR:
Renée Monet, who carefully spells her first name with an accent aigu
(that's French for "acute") over the second "e," wrote to point out:
W. C. Fields' character Egbert Sousé erroneously called it an  "ac-
cent  grave
"  in the movie  The Bank Dick  –  and niggers seem to
think it's  an apostrophe  (see this recent obituary in the Louisville
Courier-Journal):

donteket.jpg Dont'e Keaton, 1985-2021 (age 35), Louisville, KY, Courier-Journal May 4-9 2021
The accent grave turns in the opposite direction, and gives the vowel
the "short e" sound ("eh"),  not the "long a" sound
("ay") given by the
accent aigu – e.g., "crème de la
crème."    – Editor

Dear Eleanor:
                            My brother Frank passed away last month. He didn't
                            have any underlying medical conditions;  so it was a
                            shock.  My problem is,  when I was 9 and he was 14,
                            he molested me while my mother was working.   For
                            years I never told anyone;  but when I was 40,  I told
                            my mom and my big brother.  Both of them believed
                            me.  For the past five years I was there for Frank and
                            his daughter but I was always waiting for an apology
                            that never came.  Now it's all I dwell on.   How can I
                            move past this and try to remember the good times?

You are still wrong and are confusing breeds of cats with the
individual personalities and characteristics of those uniquely
individual cats.

I beg your pardon!  My Tippy is highly affectionate.  She loves
curling up with me in bed and snuggling.   And  s
he's  not  lazy.
She's  retired  and doesn't have to do a lot of  kitten  type  antics
any more.

While she is independent, that just means she's an  adult,  mature
cat with a lot of experience in the matters of the world.  She's not
proud, self-absorbed and self-satisfied, either.  She's just self-con-
fident and carries herself in a regal manner.

When I grow up, I want to be Tippy.
OK, OK; we'll do it.  Here are the cats of the week, all in one issue:    – Editor

What does the H in "Jesus H. Christ" stand for?   I  submit  that
it does not stand for anything.

My grandfather's story will illustrate:
Born  Nathan  Goldstick,
he worked as a loan officer.   Loan applications were to be mark-
ed "OK" or "NG" (for "no good"),  followed by the loan officer's
initials.  So, Grandpa approved loans with "OK NG."

The clerks got confused.  Wonder why.

So Grandpa changed his name  (legally!)  to  "Nathan H. Gold-
stick" (and no more!) and then approved loans "OK NHG."
Good thing he chose H and not F.    – Editor

HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE:

      Remember, if you don't want to receive any more of this inane crap,
just hit your "Reply" button and type in the subject line, "GET THESE
TABLOID HEADLINES OUT OF MY LIFE AND FUCK OFF!"

      But remember also, you have to spell and punctuate the message
exactly as it appears above €“ without quotation marks, and without
that redundant "Re: " that appears in so many subject lines €“ or you
will keep getting this shit!  ("Cut and paste" won't work, either.  We
have a special filter to detect that.)
