Dear Eleanor:
About a year ago,  my fiance of six years revealed
that he doesn’t think homosexuality  is  normal  or
right.   I  was  shocked  because he had never men-
tioned it before,  nor  did  I  see  any  signs  that  he
thought that way. We’ve gone to Pride celebrations,
and we both have gay relatives and friends.

When we discuss how we will raise our children, it
always winds up in an argument.  He doesn’t want
our future children to be influenced by gay people
on TV and doesn’t want me to "encourage" it.  He
did say that,  after the child turns 18,  he would ac-
cept what they "choose."  I would like to teach my
children to accept people’s true selves

I have tried reasoning with him and using logic as
to why there’s nothing wrong with gay people and
begged him to think about it from their perspective.
Nothing I can say changes his mind.  He was raised
by a very "macho" father who thinks the same way.
What should I do?  Do you think a marriage would
survive this kind of disagreement?   Would therapy
                            help?

exactly as it appears above €“ without quotation marks,  and  without  that
redundant  "Re: "  that  appears in so many subject lines  or  you'll  keep

I became aware I was not actually black  but was a-
dopted by a black family.  Even  after  becoming a-
ware I was white I hated white people.

I have an uncle from my adopting family who is ra-
cist.   He is blind and,  although Negro,  hates "Nig-
gers."  He married a white woman when young and,
after years of marriage and becoming aware he was
actually a "Negro," he divorced her because she was
                            a "Nigger lover."

I'm stuck.   Why'd Uncle Buck be amuck that white
                            people suck?

What a burden to learn I'm white.  My "uncle" loves
me because he's been  told  so,  but I am troubled by
his racism. What's a Nigger to do?
                                                                                        Ebony & Ivory
Dear Piano Man:

                                    Nothing, fer yew,
                                    'cause you're not the hue!

                                    As fer Uncle Buck,
                                    Just let him go suck

                                    The stew from the loo . . . .

Dear Eleanor:
My  ex-husband  continues to be less than cordial to
me after our divorce.  Since  we have two wonderful
                            adult children,
I would like to remain on polite terms.
But that issue is for another time.   The  problem  I'd
like  your  advice  on  is that my ex has forbidden his
sister and mother to have  any  contact  with me since
                            I moved out.

I have known my in-laws for a very long time,  and  it
has been difficult to no longer have a relationship with
them.  If we make plans for coffee,  they  become wor-
ried and feel disloyal to him.

My ex has now remarried and he seems to have moved
on.  However,  my in -laws continue to feel guilty visit-
ing with me.  Should I ask them to tell my ex about how
they feel about "sneaking" around to visit me or should
I just move on and not see them any more?

Dear Di:
You're still part of their family.  Ann Landers said, "Once an in-
law,  always an in-law."  Maybe one of us could  find  that  old
column and send it to them.
