1878

Mintage: 73,800 Proof: 20

Type: 6e

Recommended Grade: AU58

In 1878, paper money finally achieved parity with gold. Gold coins began to circulate again, as it was no longer foolish to pay with gold coin rather than Federal paper money. This meant much higher mintages for gold coins. Although there would be a few more low-mintage issues, they were now the exception rather than the rule.
