In 1878, paper money finally achieved parity with gold.
Gold coins began to circulate again, as it was no longer
foolish to pay with gold coin rather than Federal paper
money. This meant much higher mintages for gold coins.
Although there would be a few more low-mintage issues, they
were now the exception rather than the rule.
