Tales of Alvin Maker
The Tales of Alvin Maker is a series that I'll never forget. It isn't sci-fi, like the Ender Saga, and is not really fantasy, either. I would classify this series as historical fiction. The Tales of Alvin Maker makes you look back at American history in a completely different light. An underlying message pervades throughout the series: History is made of humans, and humans make history.
Seventh Son:
This story takes place around the end of 18th century America. It's
set in the time when magic is at work in the world. Beseeches, charms, and hexes are everyday things. Everyone has their special knack. Dousers find water, blacksmiths can speak to their iron, sparks set fires, second sights forwarn coming dangers, and a torch can read the heartfire of one who is nearby. And then there's the greatest knack of all, a Maker. But no Maker has been born for a century or so, and no one knows of what a Maker can do. But Alvin, the seventh son of a seventh son, is born. At the age of six, Alvin seems to have many special ablities, like his abilities to talk to animals, his way of getting twigs to bend just the right way, his ability to paint the perfect hex...and more... But something is after Alvin. Thrice already he has nearly been killed, but was saved by a seemingly miracle. A strange force is at work against him and is slowing aquiring dark followers. Something doesn't want Alvin to survive...
Red Prophet:
In this time of white man's knacks, the red men have an even greater gift, the green music. The red man's green music enables him to run through the forest without tiring and catch rabbits soundlessly. Everything in nature sings of the green music, and the red man runs with the green music. Long ago, all of America sung with the green music, but white man has shut it off. The white man has stopped the green music in all of the east already. Lolla-Wossiky has been an undignified drunk since he was eleven. Ever since he heard his father shot, the black noise has drowned out the green music in his ears. Lolla-Wossiky tries to use alcohol to still the black noise without losing the green music. Then, he meets Alvin. At the touch of Alvin, Lolla-Wossiky is a changed man. The black noise is gone, and Lolla-Wossiky has been transformed into the Red Prophet, whose job is to convince the red men and white men that they can live together peacefully. However, Lolla-Wossiky's brother, Ta-Kumsaw, belives that the only way the red men can survive is to kill off the white men. He knows that White Murderer Harrison (William Henry Harrison), governor of the rough frontier town of Carthage City, does not care about the lives of red men. Ta-Kumsaw prepares for the last battle...
Prentice Alvin:
Slavery has been abolished everywhere except for the nearby Crown Colonies. Young Peggy's life is changed when her father brings a runaway slave and her infant to her house. Alvin is coming to Hatrack River to be the apprentice of Makepeace Smith and learn the art of being a blacksmith. Not wanting to face Alvin, Peggy leaves Hatrack River before he arrives. Alvin has met his great opponent, the Unmaker. Alvin is becoming stronger; water is no longer against him. But the Unmaker has found more hands to help him. The Unmaker's people are slowly devising a plan to trap Alvin. At the same time, Alvin and the Prophet try to help the red men in any way possible. White Murderer Harrison is about to launch his great offense, and there's no one who can stop him...
Alvin Journeyman:
Alvin is now a grown man and a journey smith. He has returned to the town of Vigor Church to teach people how to "make". He sees a vision of a Crystal City in the future and is preparing the people for building it. However, the Unmaker is at work again. The Unmaker has found many people to do his bidding. Lies, deceptions, and sneaky tricks cause Alvin to return to Hatrack River. This time, for the trial of his life. To complicate matters, Alvin's younger brother, Calvin, is doing his utmost to thwart Alvin's good intentions. Calvin is also a seventh son, a Maker, and is resentful of Alvin because of his superior abilities. Calvin's hatred of Alvin is most likely also due to the fact that he was constantly overshadowed by Alvin in the past, and was never praised for his own abilities. Alvin now must handle his toughest opponents: the Unmaker, and his own brother, another Maker...
