The Social Studies Department at Coleman Junior High School is composed of four teachers. They are listed below with the grade(s) and subject(s) taught.

The seventh grade course is Eastern Hemisphere Studies to 1750. Geography is the main focus, but the cultural and historical development in the Eastern Hemisphere are emphasized for Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, and the islands of the Pacific Ocean. The content of the course is stretched to provide a fountain for understanding global affairs. The course is designed to develop skills such as reading and interrupting maps, graphs, chart, political cartoon, and secondary sources. Reading objectives are integrated into the curriculum each grading period to enhance reading skills.

The eighth grade course is United States History to 1877. This course focuses on the deveolpment of the United States from it's discovery to the Reconstruction Period. Students examine events involving the native Americans and the coming of the European settlers. Students also discuss how political ideas lead to the development of a democratic society. The skills taught in the seventh grade course are also emphasized in this course on an advanced level. The Challenge Curriculum for both courses cover the same basic information, but it takes the students to another level of instruction through kinds of cooperative learning at an accelerated pace. The students in both courses are assigned special projects throughout the year to earn additional credit and to carry instruction to a greater level.
