The eighth grade course is United States History to 1877. This course
focuses on the deveolpment of the United States from it's discovery to
the Reconstruction Period. Students examine events involving the native
Americans and the coming of the European settlers. Students also discuss
how political ideas lead to the development of a democratic society. The
skills taught in the seventh grade course are also emphasized in this course
on an advanced level. The Challenge Curriculum for both courses cover the
same basic information, but it takes the students to another level of instruction
through kinds of cooperative learning at an accelerated pace. The students
in both courses are assigned special projects throughout the year to earn
additional credit and to carry instruction to a greater level.
