July, 1990, 3 Lost Cats!

My life changed in 1990. I had 3 cats(Kit, Callie, & Boo), 2 dogs (Buffy & Barney), & 1 husband(Bob).

Bob decided to clean windows for me, he forgot to put the screen back in one window. The window was left open and that is all it took. My 3 cats went for a walk.

Searching

I searched and found Kit & Boo within 7 weeks, but Callie took an agonizing 7 months to find.

I walked the neighborhood around me, had the police help me with spotlights (they're friends), and went to the local SPCA(Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)every single day.

Local Shelter

The shelter was the worst part of the search. They wouldn't even call if they found a cat matching my descriptions.

I had to go there everyday. I would see all kinds of cats but not my babies. After a month of seeing me, one of the workers asked me if I would foster a couple of mom cats & their kittens. She informed me that if I could not do this, the moms & kittens would be killed!!! Of course, I had no choice but to say YES!

Kittens, Kittens, & More Kittens

I came home with 6 mother cats & 57 kittens! Bob was with me & he was a very big help (he still is). 23 of these kittens were orphans. I had to bottle feed these tiny babies.

I had no cages, litterboxes, feed bowls, water bowls, bottles, & assorted other items. We rushed to the local PAWS store to buy all of these things. We also needed to buy formula & vitamins for all of the orphaned kittens.

Foster Homes to New Homes

I found good, loving, indoor homes for all of my kittens and the moms. The SPCA started giving my phone number to people who had unwanted pregnant cats and/or kittens. I couldn't say no and this started my animal shelter.

Cat Ladies

I now have several other women helping with the shelter and other activities. We are known in the area as the Cat Ladies.
