Directions: From Route 3. bear right onto Route 102. After passing through Somesville, take a right at the fire station continuing to follow Route 102. (Be sure to turn right. Route 102 also continues straight through Somesville). You'll pass Somes Pond on your left, and it a short distance, you'll see a pond with a small beach area on your left, and a canoe rental on your right. There is only a small parking area. You may need to find a parking place along the road next to the canoe rental.
Paddling Information: Long Pond is, as the name indicates, the longest pond on the island. It is about four miles long and there is an arm which swings out to the right from the main body. It does not appear to be that large when you first see it from the launch area. Long Pond has more motor boats and paddled boats in general than any of the other lakes or ponds, but it is still a fun place to paddle. Swimming is allowed on much of the lake, but it is not at the far south end. That end has a water filtration plant which serves the public water supply. Don't ask me for the logic behind the no swimming rule.
Each October, there is a triathlon on Saturday starting at the canoe rental. On Sunday, there is a canoe and kayak race. Both are well attended and exciting events.
