Directions: Mt. Desert Campground is located near the end of Somes Sound, Many of its campsites are right next to the water. There is a tar boat launch area there, and it's a great from which to launch or to land in high tide. In low tide, there is quite a mud flat in front of the landing.
Paddling Information: From Mt. Desert Campground, you have access to Somes Sound. The area immediately around the campground has a few islands which protect you from the wind. There are also a few boats moored nearby which make it picturesque. Part way down the western shore of Somes Sound there is a quarry which is no longer operated. Toward the mouth of the sound, Man of War Brook splashes into the sound. For centuries, ships pulled up to Man of War Book to renew their supply of fresh water. Beyond the brook, there is a little beach which lies below Flying Mountain. On the eastern shore of Somes Sound, you'll see some of the larger summer homes of Mt. Desert's more prosperous visitors.
