What is the KidHistory Network?
How do we teach history differently?
Why teach history this way?
How do children benefit from this type of learning?
What role does technology have in this type of teaching?

Projects for the network were originally created by students using multimedia software. As multimedia presentations they contain photographs of our students, music and narration. We are sorry that we can not present the projects in this exciting form online. We hope to be able to do so in the future.

The KidHistory Network is children teaching children about critical issues in history. It consists of an oral and written tradition which has been enhanced by the use of technology
over the past five years.

When we say history we do not mean history from a narrow or one-sided perspective. We mean history in the context of the time in which it occurred including all of the peoples and cultures of that time. When we talk about learning history we do not mean memorizing meaningless and unrelated facts. We mean children learning to think critically about history, learning to analyze the causes and effects of historical events, learning to put themselves in the place of historical figures in order to view the world as they might have viewed it, learning to see them as people with strengths and weaknesses, experiencing triumphs and overcoming tragedies.

We teach children about history in this way because we believe that it will help them to become better citizens as adults, citizens who will celebrate our country's rich diversity, who will morally and ethically question what we do as a nation, who will analyze and oppose injustice and imprudence. We believe in essence that critical thinking is at the heart of good citizenship. We believe that learning to think critically and solve problems creatively equips children with valuable tools they will use for the rest of their lives.

The KidHistory Network is based on interdisciplinary curricula which use technology based projects as a vehicle to integrate reading, writing, language arts and social studies.
