Limit Breaks
How Limit Breaks Work, How to Gain new ones, And where the 4th Limit break is located

character has 3 levels of limit breaks, each with 2 breaks. Each player starts with their level 1 1st break. To get the level 1 2nd break you must use the level 1 1st break 8 times.
To get the level 2 1st break you have to kill 80 enemies. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER OR NOT YOU'VE LEARNED OR EVEN USED YOUR LEVEL 1 2ND BREAK!!!! This is what screws people up, it is possible to get the level 2 1st break without having learned the level 1 2nd, but to use the character's level 4 manual you have to have learned every break. If you're having trouble using a character's level 4 manual go back and check to see that you've learned BOTH limit breaks for all 3 levels--if one is missing you have to set your limit break back to that level and learn it.
To register a kill the character has to be the one to deliver the blow that kills the enemy. For example, if it's Cloud's hit that causes the enemy to die then, even if the other characters had caused damage to the creature first, Cloud will be the one who gets the kill. It does not matter how you kill the enemy, limit breaks, spells, summons, or good old physical violence.

To get the level 2 2nd break you have to use the level 2 1st break 8 times.

To get the level 3 1st break you have to have killed 80 enemies since gaining the level 2 1st break--again it doesn't matter if you've even learned the level 2 2nd break.

To get the level 3 2nd break you need to use the level 3 1st break 8 times.

Once you've learned your level 3 2nd break (and all others before it) you can go to your item list and use the character's level 4 manual on him or her--you do not have to ever have used the level 3 2nd break--I've never used any of mine.

 Here are some examples

Vincent: only has one break per level--he starts with level 1, to get to level 2 Vincent has to kill 60 enemies, to get to level 3 he has to kill another 60--as soon as he gets to level 3 you can use his level 4 manual.

Cait Sith:only has two limit levels--he begins with level one and he needs to kill 80 enemies to get to level 2.

Limit Break Manuals
To learn Level 4 limit breaks you'll need to find the manuals. Here's how to find them.

  • Cloud Strife: Trade  32,000 Battle points for the Omnislash, at the Gold Saucer.
  • Tifa Lockheart: Go to Nibleheim (Tifa's house) and play these piano notes: X, square, triangle, L1/R1 + triangle, L1/R1 + square, X, square, triangle, L1/R1 + X, circle, X, square, X, Then press START & search the music sheet to find Final Heaven, Tifa's 4th Limit break. NOTE: if you do this trick in disc 1 you will get one gil, you can only get Final Heaven from Disc 2 .
  • Barret Wallace:A lady will give it to you in North Corel.
  • Aeris Gainsbrough: Southeast of Midger there is a small cave with a man living there. Talk to him when you have battled a certain number of battles that end in the same number, such as 122, 133, 144. He will then give you a Mithril orb. Take the Mithril to the Blacksmith's house on the south peninsula near Gonga. Give him the Orb & then you can open one of two boxes the one on the 2nd Floor contains Great Gospel, Aeris 4th limit break. The box on the 1st floor contains a Gold Bracelet.
  • REDXIII: In Nibleheim there is a Mansion & on the second floor of this Mansion their is a safe. To crack this code turn RIGHT 36, LEFT 10, RIGHT 59, & RIGHT 97. Then the safe will open to reveal a miny boss & you will recieve Cosmo Memory Red's 4th Limit break, you will also get the summon Odin & the key to basement to get Vincent.
  • Vincent Valentine: Land near the waterfall & use the green, black, or gold chocobo to pass through the mountains. Then enter the waterfall. (you must have Vincent in your group & must be done first in Disc 2) go forward & and it will show vincent's past. Then leave. Return If you are already in Disc 3  and you'll not only get Chaos (Vincents 4th limit), but Vincent's best weapon.
  • Cid Highwind:Cid's manual is in one of the chests in the sunken plane.
  • Yuffie Kisaragi: Go to Wutai and enter the tower with Yuffie & let Yuffie beat all the bosses  including her father and you'll get her 4th Limit manual "All Creation" & Leviathan summon materia.
  • Cait Sith: NOTE: he only has two Limits, this is probably because he is a robot.
