FUNCTIONAL DIVISIONS OF THE LIVER - SURGICAL ANATOMY

Anatomical and surgical divisions of the liver vary.Anatomically the liver is divided into the right and left lobes by a line (the principal plane) passing thro' the bed of the gallbladder projecting posteriorly towards the inferior venacava. The caudate lobe is equally shared between the right and the left lobes of the liver. Each lobe is divided into two segments;the right lobe into anterior and posterior by an oblique line running anteroposteriorly and the left lobe into medial and lateral segments by the insertion of the ligamentum teres and ligamentum venosum.

Depicted in this picture is a functional division (not anatomical) useful in segmental resections and liver reconstruction following transplants.Accordingly the liver is divided into eight segments (I-VIII) each with it's own vascular supply, biliary & venous drainage.
