Many think that Zel is an over-serious golem. And many other think Zelgadiss as a really cute shaminist, golem, dude. (That's what I think) Zelgadiss is an extremely popular character in Slayers being next to Lina. Most fans are girls. There are boys also.^_^.
Zelgadiss is a chimera being one-third human, one-third golem, and one-third demon. This happened long time ago, before he met Lina, Zelgadiss was training to become more powerful and stronger. One day, Rezo the Red Priest, Zel's great grandfather and grandfather and the villian of the show for the first couple of episode, confronted Zel.
He told Zel that if he joined up with him and helped him look for the Philosipher Stone, Rezo would in turn, grant his wish of being more powerful and stronger. There is always a catch. The priest said that he would "be completely changed." Zel, at the time, didn't understand the true meaning of these words, and he agreed to help Rezo. This is when Rezo transformed him into a Chimera.
Zel can be easily blush in the subject of romance. His weakness is the sword of light in which that is one of the little way of being killed. Because he is 1/3 golem his body is hard as a rock or shall I say, is a rock. 1/3 golem makes him move faster.
