Labs personify the adage of unconditional
love and loyalty.
If only we humans could do that well,
the world would be a far better place.
This is a salute to labbies everywhere and to
my Heart Dog:F.B.
F.B. is now at The Bridge.
(If you've never heard of the Rainbow Bridge then click on the
link below. Take a kleenex with you on your visit.)
F.B. was a big Black lab (I mean big, weighing in at 122 lbs.)
He was such a gentle giant, when children or tiny dogs
were around, he would hold perfectly still.
My cousins raised labs but I never had one of my own.
F.B. belonged to my second husband, but the first time
I met him he came to my side and never left it again.
This change of loyalty should have signaled me that
something was wrong. Labs are known for their loyalty and
temperment.
It was not long after the wedding that my husband beat me
breaking my back as well as my pride.
When we got divorced I signed off on three houses to keep F.B.
We had a great life together for many years.
We lived a mile from the beach on the Gulf of Mexico
He ,like most labs adored the water and could have retrieved
all day if I didn't make him take breaks.
Once a large group of teenage boy dolphins came out to play
and tease him out by the bouys, his cut off area.
They would swim close to him then race beyond the bouys
and "stand" on their tail and laugh.
This drew quite a crowd and me with no camera!! Waaaah!
Whe I got cancer he saw me through all the surgery, the chemo,
etc. then passed gently over to The Rainbow Bridge where
I will see him again.
A Dog’s Prayer _______by Beth Norman Harris Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music. as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear. When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though you had no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow then rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I might stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready to protect you with my life should your life be in danger. And beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest ---- and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was always safest in your hands.
