In their world of 'make pretend'
And happy ever after
Children seem to have a way
To fill each day with laughter.
Have you ever made the time,
To watch a child play?
If you do and listen, too,
You just could hear them say:
"Make pretend that I'm a daddy,
And you're my 'growed up' wife.
Make pretend you love me,
And we have a happy life.
Make pretend that war's a word
That no one ever heard of.
And everyone is friendly,
With no one to be ascared of.
Make pretend that you 'got dead'
And I made you all well.
And all there is heaven
And no such place like Hell.
Make pretend the starving children
Aren't hungry any more.
'Caus everyone shared everything,
Throughout the whole wide world!"
Peace on earth for everyone!
Only good will towards men!
Wouldn't it be just wonderful,
If they didn't have to 'make pretend?'
"I know that I'll get married,"
Little David said.
"But I won't have any kids
I'll adopt them all instead."
Adopt? That's nice, but why?
I asked him as we sat.
"Well, I know how you make babies
And I don't wanna do THAT"
Debbie ran in from the game
And said excitedly:
"Jimmy John was at the game
And he put the chest protector on me!"
She was out of breath, spoke too fast,
Her words were not too clear.
Jimmy who? Put the what?
Just where did you say dear?
"You know! The thing that protects,
The little things I don't got yet?"
E.J. ran into the house,
The child was terrified!
And running right behind him
Was some kid twice his size!
I placed myself between the two
And restrained the kid.
"Let me go! I'll beat him up!"
NO! Just tell me what he did!
"E.J. called my mom a dog!"
E.J. shook and twitched!
"Honest! I didn't call his mom nothin'
I called HIM A son of a #@&%&!!"
Dad was trying to catch a nap,
Early one afternoon.
He knew it wouldn't last too long,
The kids would be home soon.
He was dozing peacefully
When he woke up with a scare!
His son had lifted s eyelid up
Shouting. . "Dad! Are you in there!"
"A big fat monster took my doll,
And threw it way up high!"
Little Debbie said to me,
As she began to cry.
There are no big fat monsters dear.
"Oh yes there are!" she said,
"It had thirteen green 'co co dots'
All sprinkled on his head!"
She took my hand and said to me;
"C'mon, I'll show you where!
There he is! I told you so! "
Pointing into thin air!
What was it that she thought she saw?
I found it quite frustrating!
'Till E.J. solved the mystery,
"AHH MA! SHE'S JUST 'AMAGINATING!"
Little Tommy disobeyed,
He knew he was in trouble!
He though Dad won't be so mad,
If he 'fessed up' on the double!
"Do you know the story
'bout George Washington as a kid?
He was bad, but told the truth,
And not punished 'cause he did?"
"Yes,"His father answered,
"It's a favorite story of mine."
"Well," Tommy said, as he took a breath.
"PLEASE! Keep that in mind!!"
David said "When I'm growed up,
I'm gunna be a preacher and a cop!
'cause if I can't help the bad guys,
Then I can just lock 'em up!"
"LOOK! God turned off the rain today!
I think that I'll go out and play!
I'll run and jump and have such fun!
As soon as God turns on the sun!"
