called nightshade, Belladonna is a shrub-like perennial herb growing about
3 feet tall (up to 6) with a leafy, smooth, slightly purplish branched stem.
They have dull or dusky green, fuzzy leaves are alternate and unequal in
size on the upper parts of the stem and solitary bell-shaped five lobed
purplish-brown or white flowers. The flowers are followed by berries which
begin green and turn deep purple to glossy black with inky purple juice in
September.

A Black Myrtle Berry (A Bag of Myrtle Berries) - The berries of a
common evergreen bushy shrub of southern Europe with lance-shaped, shiny
leaves and fragrant white or rosy flowers. Myrtle is used to treat
bronchitis, bruises, bad breath, wounds, colds, sinusitis, and coughs.
Myrtle is also burned as an incense to bring beauty, to honor Aphrodite,
and is a symbol of glory and happy love. Grown on each side of a house is
said to preserve and protect the love within. They symbolize true love, goodness,
and chastity.

A Bright Red Poppy (A Bouquet of Red Poppies) - Any of chiefly annual
or perennial herbs with milky juice, showy regular flowers, and capsule-shaped
fruits including the opium poppy. The extract of a poppy is used as
a medicine, mostly as a sleeping agent. To find the answer to a question,
write it in blue ink on a piece of white paper. Place the paper inside a
poppy seed pod and put it beneath your pillow. The answer will come to you

A Bright Red Rowan Tree Pome (A Sack of Rowan Tree Pomes) - A pome
is the swollen floral tube of the flower on a Rowan tree. The Rowan,
in the Celtic tree calendar, is associated with the second moon after Samhain.
This normally means that it has Yule, Christmas and the New year in it. At
this time of the year, the Rowan is an outstanding tree full of berries.
It was planted especially around churches, to keep out the fey folk,
and to turn evil magic, it is said to weaken physically and mentally those
who are of the wise kin, or witches. Also called mountain ashes, these
trees grow to 30 feet high and have leaves divied into 11 to 17 leaflets
with flat-topped clusters of whitish flowers that develop into small, red,
sour, apple-like fruits.

A Bright Yellow Dandelion (A Crown of Yellow Dandelions) - A
yellow-flowered plant, sometimes grown as a leafy herb that is cooked for
use as greens but almost always found in the wild as a weed. The dandelion
benefits all aspects of the liver and promots healthy circulation. The
juice from the broken stem is used to heal warts and clear the skin. It
is a sign of rain when the seeds of a dry dandelion fall without the help
of the wind, blowing the seeds off a dandelion carries your thoughts to a
loved one.

of some unknown plant that cause paralysis when ingested.

from old campfires burning the wood of an elm, a large tree with large leaves
and small flowers with no petals. Externally elm is an excellent healer for
burns, skin cancers, poison ivy, and wounds. It is also used to neutralize
stomach acid, draw out impurities and heal all parts of the body. Elm
wood is also burned to stop gossip.

A Chip of Charred Oak (A Bag of Oak Chips) - A chip of wood retrieved
from old campfires burning the wood of an oak, a tree or shrub of the beech
family that produce acorns. The oak is the most sacred of all trees
and the most powerful misteltoe grows in them. The branches are said
to make powerful wands and the leaves are burned for purification. It
is also said that carrying the wood of an oak will protect you from harm,
carrying an acorn from an oak tree is supposed to make you more attractive
and promote fertility, and planting an acorn in the dark of the moon will
supposedly bring you money.

A Chip of Charred Witchwood (A Bag of Witchwood Chips) - Also known
as "The Blood of Hephaestus", this is a chip of burned witchwood that
appears to be similair to the wormwood which has silvery-grey foliage and
seems to glow in the moonlight, hence it's connection with Artemis. It symbolizes
absence. Or it could be the wood from a witch hazel tree, a shrub or
small tree that grows up to 15 feet high. It is used externally for
insect bites, burns, and bleeding while it can be used internally for treating
flus, colds, and internal bleeding. The forked twigs of the witch hazel
tree are used for divining and it is said that carrying one will heal broken
hearts and cool passions.

A Chunk of Charred Mistletoe (A Bag of Mistletoe Chips) - A chip of
burnt mistletoe, a European green shrub with thick leaves, small yellowish
flowers, and waxy-white berries. On an interesting side-note mistletoe
is well-known as a sacred plant. The druids of old considered it sacred because
in the dead of winter, when the branches of the oak tree were bare, and all
of nature seemed dead, the mistletoe high in the trees was still green, and
flourished without having roots in the earth. To them, it represented the
life and spirit of the tree. It symbolizes the ability to surmount
diffucult situations.

Hemlock is a tall, much branched and gracefully growing plant, with elegantly-cut
foliage and white flowers. Country people very generally call by the name
of Hemlock many species of umbelliferous plants, but the real Hemlock may
be distinguished by its slender growth, perfectly smooth stem which is marked
with red, and its finely-divided leaves which are also smooth. The poisonous
property occurs in all parts of the plant, though it is stated to be less
strong in the root.

from the clouds as rain, forms streams, lakes, and seas, and is a major
constituent of all living matter and that when pure is an odorless, tasteless,

to have originated in either India or Thailand, the cucumber has been cultivated
for thousands of years. This long, cylindrical, green-skinned fruit of the
gourd family has edible seeds surrounded by a mild, crisp flesh. The thin
skin, unless waxed, does not require peeling. Cucumbers are usually eaten
raw, as in salads. The smaller cucumber varieties are used for pickles.

A Garlic Clove (A Handful of Garlic Cloves) - Garlic has long been
credited with providing and prolonging physical strength and is fed to the
Egyptian slaves building the giant pyramids. Throughout the centuries, its
medicinal claims have included cures for toothaches, consumption, open wounds
and evil demons. A member of the lily family, garlic is a cousin to leeks,
chives, onions and shallots. The edible bulb or "head" grows beneath the
ground. This bulb is made up of sections called cloves, each encased in its
own parchmentlike membrane.

perennial herb having 5-parted leaves, scarlet berries, and an aromatic root

of illness. It's also used to lower blood pressure, increase endurance,
and relieve depression. Ginseng may also be carried to protect your
health and attract love.

built by honeybees in their nests to contain their brood and stores of honey,
a sweet sticky material taken out of the nectar of flowers in the honey sac
of various bees. It symbolizes generous and devoted affection.

A Hypericum Blossom (A Bouquet of Hypericum Blossoms) - Hypericum
is a short, yellow-flowering, wild-growing plant, healing herb to some,
troublesome weed to others. It has a history of safe and effective usage
in folk, herbal, and ancient medicine. Hypericum is prescribed as medicine
by Dioscorides, the foremost physician of ancient Greece, as well as Pliny
in Rome, and Hippocrates the father of medicine himself. Its Latin
name, Hypericum perforatum, is derived from Greek and means "over an apparition,"
a reference to the belief that the herb was so obnoxious to evil spirits
that a whiff of it would cause them to depart.

A Leaf of Stink Cabbage (A Bunch of Stink Cabbage Leaves) - Either
of two herbs of the arum family that occur in shaded wet to swampy areas
and have a fetid odor suggestive of a skunk. Associated with the circle

early spring the plant generates enough heat to thaw the ground so the plant
can push up through last years growth.

family whose leaves are usually cultivated for tobacco prepared for use in
smoking or chewing or as snuff.

A Mandrake Root (A Bunch of Mandrake Roots) - A Mediterranean herb
of the nightshade family with egg-shaped leaves, yellowish or purple flowers,
and a large forked root. On an interesting side-note the twisted, elaborate
root was thought to look like a man, and people thought it screamed when
it was pulled out of the ground. Dogs were used to pull roots up, because
supposedly the dog always died afterwards. This root has a narcotic effect.
While it is used to treat skin problems, digestion, and liver diseases
it can be very toxic if used improperly. It is carried to promote
conception and men carry it to ensure fertility.

Ladyslippers) - A large flower with a long stem and a single cream-colored
petal curved around into a shape similar to a lady's slipper.

and trees of warm regions with leaves that resemble feathers with white or

irregular and coarsely fibrous. Its powerful binding qualities causes it

faster. It is also a blood purifier, and an infection preventer. Burned
in incense, cinnamon will promote high spirituality and help with healing.

A Spine of Aloe (Some Spines of Aloe) - Aloe is a succulent perennial
whose fleshly leaves contain a clear gelatinous juice used in cosmetics and
ointments for insect bites and sunburn. The thick, leathery, straplike green
leaves grow to a length of 6 to 24 inches. They are usually edged with soft
spines and, when young, are dotted with white spots.

A Sprig of Baby's Breath (A Bouquet of Baby's Breath) - A plant with
delicate, white, single flowers on multi-branched, and slender stems. The
flowers are 3/4 inches across with 6-8 overlaping petals. They prefer full
sun and soil that dries out before watering and grow 18-30 inches high.
Appropriately named for its small, softly-scented blossoms. The botanical
name, gypsophila, means love chalk, referring to its preference for chalky
soil.

A Sprig of Green Mint (A Bunch of Green Mint) - Any of a family of
aromatic plants that have white, purple, or pink circularly arranged flowers
that can be used for flavoring and cooking. It is also used to cure
mouth sores, whiten teeth, heal dog bites and wasp stings and used in preventing
milk from curdling. It repels mice and rats, too. The Romans believe that
by eating mint, you have have an increased intelligence level and have relief
from headaches. They rub tabletops with mint for it symbolizes hospitality
and virtue.

A Stalk of Lemongrass (A Bunch of Lemongrass) - One of the most important
flavorings in Thai cooking, this herb has long, thin, gray-green leaves and
a scallionlike base. Citral, an essential oil also found in lemon peel, gives
lemon grass its sour-lemon flavor and fragrance. Lemon grass is available
fresh or dried and is used to make tea and to flavor soups and other dishes.

A Stalk of Milkweed (A Bunch of Milkweed) - Milkweed is a tall plant
with big leaves and little purple flowers at the top of it. Inside
their leaves, there is a white, milky fluid that is poisonous for most insects.
When you rip a milkweed leaf the milky fluid flows out as if the leaf were
bleeding. Various parts of the plant are edible, including the flowers,
young sprouts, and buds. People have long used this plant for food and used
its extract as a medicine for coughs.

A Stalk of Wild Eyebright (A Bouquet of Wild Eyebright) - An herb
similar to the snapdragon with opposite toothed leaves, the stalk of which
tastes amazingly like watercress. Eyebright stimulates the liver to remove
toxins from the body and it has been used internally and externally to treat
eye infections and afflictions, such as pink-eye. The herb strengthens the
eye, and helps to repair damage. It is also used to make a simple tea to
rub on the eyelids to induce and enhance clairvoyant visions.

A Wild Carrot (A Bunch of Wild Carrots) - A wild carrot is another
name for Queen Anne's Lace which is a European herb that has a bitter root
from which the carrots we know came from. It's obvious though that
the wild carrots we can forage for are carrots, an herb with an orange,
spindle-shaped root, and not Queen Anne's Lace...

A Wild Chickory Root (A Bunch of Wild Chickory Roots) - A thick-rooted
usually blue-flowered European perennial herb widely grown for its roots
and for use in salads. The dried ground roasted root of chickory is
used to flavor coffee. It symbolizes the removing of obsticles and
frugality.

A Withered Black Mushroom (Some Withered Black Mushrooms) - These
mushrooms seem to fit in a category known as "little brown mushrooms" which
is basically just a group of dark brownish to black mushrooms that range
from harmless to deadly. The innocent-looking little mushrooms
of the genus Galerina are probably the most dangerous of the LBMs. They contain
the same toxin as amanitas and have caused a number of deaths.

Foraging for Fishing
Cypress Stick - A stick from the cypress tree, a coniferous tree that
is mostly evergreen, and has wood remarkable for its durability.Cypress,
was dedicated to Pluto, and was a common planting in cemeteries all along
the Mediterranean. Called the mourning tree, folks like to plant
cypress on graves and use its wood for coffins. Cypress is one of many
plants that are considered unlucky if you dream about them. A cypress
tree near the tomb of the Persian Cyrus leaked blood every Friday. It was
an object of veneration, especially since Friday is the sabbath for Mahometans.
Cypresses were held sacred by the Persians because they thought it was the
first tree planted in their Paradise and was brought to earth by Zarathustra
himself.

Walnut Stick - A stick from a walnut tree. Walnut has a reputation
as a sinister tree as it is thought to kill any vegetation near it, they
seem to especially dislike oaks. It is said that in the evening, if you walk
underneath a walnut tree, you can hear the devil's servants whispering up
in the branches. The belief that walnuts harbor evil spirits is
long-standing; Paschall II once cut down a walnut tree in Rome because he
thought Nero's evil soul was living it. European folklore also tells us that
a heavy crop of walnuts indicates a harsh winter and to dream of walnuts
implies unfaithfulness in relationships. Carrying a spider in a walnut
shell is supposed to prevent fevers.

Maple Stick - A stick from a maple tree. Maples comprise one
of the largest, most diverse, and most important groups of broadleaved trees
in the world. Maples are noted for their leaves--which grow opposite
one another and have palmately arranged lobes and veins--and their propeller-like
seeds, called samaras. These trees are used as ornamental trees in
gardens and such because of the great amount of shade they provide, their
leaves sometimes reaching up to a foot in diameter.

Bamboo - The common name for any species of perennial, woody,
usually shrubby or treelike plants of the grass family. Bamboos occur mostly
in tropical and subtropical areas. The plants range from about 3 to
164 ft in height. Bamboos have woody, jointed stems called culms. The
culms consist of hollow sections called internodes, which are interrupted
by regularly spaced solid partitions called nodes. At each node a sheath
protects a bud, which may develop into either a branch or a flower cluster.
Young shoots are eaten as a vegetable.

Mayfly - The adult Mayfly is fragile, soft-bodied and elongate with
two or three long, many-jointed, threadlike tails. Antennae are short
inconspicuous bristles on its large head with with round prominent eyes.
Forelegs are quite long and stout. Front wings are large, triangular, membranous
with numerous longitudinal veins and cross veins and held upright and together
over the body when at rest. Different mayfly species range from about 1/4
to 1-inch long.

Leaf Worm - A soft-bodied, usually small and often elongated animal
lacking limbs. The term is applied to many unrelated invertebrates or their
larvae and to a few vertebrates. Flatworms are simpler animals that
are free-living and occur in the sea, fresh water, and moist land areas.
Others, such as the tapeworm and fluke, are parasites that live inside other
animals. These are leaf worms...they live in trees and eat leaves,
imagine that.

Earthworm - Earthworms are used by fishermen more than any other bait.
They are the top choice for fish bait and will catch just about anything
from bass and walleyes to channel catfish and bluegills. Unfortunately,
earthworms are plentiful only in the spring and late autumn when the soil
is moist. Fishermen favor native nightcrawlers because of their large
size, which is up to 8 to 10 inches long. Garden worms are found in damp
soils and are about 5 to 7 inches long.

Cricket (black brown) - Crickets get their name from the high-pitched
sound or "chirp" produced when the male rubs his front wings together to
attract a female. Different kinds of crickets can be identified by listening
to their song. They resemble longhorned grasshoppers in having long
tapering antennae, striculating (singing) organs on the front wings and auditory
(hearing) organs on the front leg. Adults range in size from 1/2 to
1-1/4 inches long depending on the species, are usually black-colored (sometimes
brown), have long, slender antennae, and a typical stout body with large
"jumping" hind legs.

Small Frog - Frogs are usually small, with smooth, moist skin; bulging
eyes; and external eardrums behind the eyes. Frogs have long hind legs, and
most species can take long leaps. Many species also have webbed feet, making
them excellent swimmers. Most frogs, especially males, are quite vocal and
have a tongue covered with a sticky substance, making it an efficient trap.
As with all amphibians, a frog's body temperature depends on its surroundings.
Frogs eat mostly insects, worms, spiders, and centipedes.

Locust - The common name for a number of jumping insects, especially
the true locusts, which are migratory grasshoppers. True locusts damage crops
severely wherever they swarm. Control measures include spreading poison bait,
plowing under locust eggs, and spraying insecticides on plants. The cicada
is also called locust.

metamorphosis during development into adults. Grubs, which are usually wormlike
