Old Shep

Please ... (-: Would you mind ever so much taking a little stroll down memory lane with me ~ ?¿?, while I share just a little piece of my early childood with you. I remember so vividly sitting with my Mom and she would sing so beautifully this song; that I always "unmercifully"; would beg and plead that she sing to me. I remember it touching me in my earliest years of my youth, so much, that I would sit and cry and cry as she sang the song to me. And as I sit today and read the words again it brings so many special memories to my mind and the same salty tears to my eyes, still stream down my face... )-:
I can see you Mama, sitting and holding me ever so lovingly and smiling down at me, gently wiping my childhood tears; singing with your voice like an angel....
~ Old Shep ~

When I was a lad
And old Shep was a pup,
Over hills and meadows we'd stray
Just a boy and his dog
We were both full of fun
And we grew up together that way.
I remember the time at the old swimmin' hole
When I would have drowned beyond doubt
But old Shep was right there
To the rescue he came
He jumped in and helped pull me out.
As the years fast did roll
Old Shep he grew old
His eyes were fast growing dim
And one day the doctor looked at me and said
I can do no more for him Jim.
With hands that were trembling
I picked up my gun
And aimed it at Shep's faithful head
I just couldn't do it
I wanted to run
I wish they would shoot me instead.
He came to my side
And looked up at me
And he laid his old head on my knee
I had struck the best friend that a man ever had
I cried so I scarcely could see.
Old Shep he has gone
Where the good doggies go
And no more with old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven
There's one thing I know
Old Shep has a wonderful home.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

A Dog In Heaven
An old man and his dog were walking down a dirt road with fences on both sides. They came to a gate in the fence and looked in. It was nice, with grassy, woodsy areas...just what a huntin' dog and man would like-but it had a sign saying, "No Trespassing," so they walked on.
They came to a beautiful gate with a person in white robes standing there. "Welcome to Heaven," the robed man said. The old man was happy and started in with his dog following him.
The gatekeeper stopped him. "Dogs aren't allowed. I'm sorry, but he can't come with you."
"What kind of Heaven won't allow dogs?" the old man said. "If he can't come in, then I will stay out with him. He's been my faithful companion all his life. I can't desert him now."
"Suit yourself," the gatekeeper said. "But I have to warn you, the Devil's on this road and he'll try to sweet talk you into his area. He'll promise you anything, but the dog can't go there either. If you won't leave the dog, you'll spend Eternity on this road."
So the old man and dog went on. They came to a rundown fence with a gap in it-no gate, just a hole. Another old man was inside. "'Scuse me, sir. My dog and I are getting mighty tired. Mind if we come in and sit in the shade for awhile?"
"Come on in," the man said. "There's some cold water under that tree over there. Make yourselves comfortable."
"You're sure my dog can come in? The man down the road said dogs weren't allowed anywhere."
"Would you come in if you had to leave the dog?"
"No sir. That's why I didn't go to Heaven. He said the dog couldn't come in. We'll be spending Eternity on this road, and a glass of cold water and some shade would be mighty fine right about now. But I won't come in if my buddy here can't come too, and that's final."
The man smiled a big smile and said, "Welcome to Heaven."
"You mean this is Heaven? Dogs are allowed? How come that fellow down the road said they weren't?"
"That was the Devil, and he gets all the people who are willing to give up a life-long companion for a comfortable place to stay. They soon find out their mistake, but then it's too late. The dogs come here, the fickle people stay there. God wouldn't allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all, He created them to be man's companions in life. Why would he separate them in death?"

A Little Dog Angel
High up in the courts of heaven today
A little dog angel waits;
With the other angels he will not play,
But he sits alone at the gates.
"For I know my master will come" says he,
"And when he comes he will call for me."
The other angels pass him by
As they hurry toward the throne,
And he watches them with a wistful eye
As he sits at the gates alone.
"But I know if I just wait patiently
That someday my master will call for me."
And his master, down on earth below,
As he sits in his easy chair,
Forgets sometimes, and whispers low
To the dog who is not there.
And the little dog angel cocks his ears
And dreams that his master's voice he hears.
And when at last his master waits
Outside in the dark and cold,
For the hand of death to open the door,
That leads to those courts of gold,
He will hear a sound through the gathering dark,
A little dog angel's bark.

And God shall wipe away all tears from
their eyes and there shall be no more death,
neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall
there be any more pain; for the former
things are passed away.
