Description - The City of Galharren is a huge, walled, free trade city at the
mouth of a great river. The ruler of Galharren, Windmace the Fist, and all
of his predecessors have built the city defenses on the assumption that
attacks will come from the water. The natural defenses around the city are
formidable. The river itself is too wide and deep to bridge or ford. The
Great Scar, a one hundred foot high cliff at the base of the southern city
wall, nearly eliminates any possibility of a threat from the south. The
mountains of the west serve the same purpose. Sixty miles to the north, the
river cuts a deep gorge through the western mountains closing off this little
valley.
There is little farming or ranching done in the small valley claimed by the
city as Galharren’s economy is in trade . Though patrols of it’s borders are
frequent and well armed, the freehold simply doesn’t have much use for the
small tract of land it holds. Because of this, most of the valley is still
wild oak and holly forest populated by all manner of beasts and savage races.
The forest encompasses most of the valley including the foothills. This is
seen as an asset by the ruler. Moving an army overland to capture of the city
would be a fool’s errand.
At the bottom of the Great Scar in a large brackish swamp is an inn, known as
the Slasher’s Rest. This great wooden building rests comfortably on an island
in the swamp, roughly a mile from the cliff. This is the home of the scum of
Galharren. Outlaws, adventurers, and others who don’t belong in respectable
society, gather here to hatch dark plans or simply to live free of the laws of
Galharren. The Slasher’s Rest boasts it’s own forge and craftsmen always
ready to repair all manor of goods, particularly armor, swords, and leather
goods. Flat boats and guides are available for hire in the inn. These
wretched swamp dwellers know the marsh well. The scum of Galharren have never
posed a threat to the city. Subsequently, the rulers of Galharren do their
best to ignore them.
