Fads    of    the    Fifties

- Some popular hairstyles of the 50's were "The Poodle" which Lucille Ball wore hers in. For the guys, the "Ducktail" or "Apache" was common.

-The ducktail was the hairstyle worn in "Grease" by the guys, and the Apache was a shaved head with spikes on the side.

-Hula Hoops became popular in 1958.

-The frisbee appeared in 1957.

-College students stuffed themselves into phonebooths and Volkswagons for fun.

-They also swallowed whole live goldfish.

-Some lawn games were croquet, badminton, horseshoes, and tetherball.

-For the first time people had Polaroid photos.

-T.V. became very popular for people who could afford it.

-Some popular shows in the 50's were Davy Crockett (which brought in $100 million in coonskin caps), Mickey Mouse, Howdy Doody, and Hopalong Cassidy.

-Scrabble became popular along with Slinky, Silly Putty, and Tonka Toys.

-In 1959 Barbie was introduced.

-Disneyland opened in 1955.

-3-D Comics with special glasses became a must-have for kids.

-Dear Abby and Amy Vanderbilt appeared in the 50's to help you solve your problems.

-The idea of UFOs and aliens caught on.

-Some commen slang terms:
"Drag Race"- Standing Start
"Grounded"-can't go out
"Hot Rod"- Souped up car
"Square"- Someone really out of it
"Passion Pit"- Drive in Movies
"Wheels"- Car
