While it may seem impossible that the hard rock noise of Naked City and the subtle interplay Masada were products of the same mind, Zayin seems to bridge the two.  The juxtapositions of frantic melodies to deconstructed atonality in "Hath-Arob", the brief saccharine track "Bacharach", and the shifting rhythms of "Nevuah" show signs of Zorn's earlier work. This album seems to be breaking new ground for the Masada, exploring new grooves in Shevet, Otiot and Tekuhah, new sounds in Hath-Arob and Nevuah, and odd new songs formats in Bacharach and Zemer.
