The words "Battle Born" appear on this flag because the state was admitted to the Union during the Civil War. Gold and silver from the famous Comstock Lode, near Virginia City, supplied the Union Government with the much needed resources to finance it's cause during the Civil War. The large star in the seal stands for the state metal, silver, and it's statehood. Louis Shellback III, won $25.00 for his design of the flag during a contest in 1929. Nevada is the Spanish word meaning "Snowclad". The state flower is also seen in the seal. |
