A haunting human voice spoke, a voice from a man who was no longer of this universe. As the sounds came, the words filled the screen.

Mission day 11204

I must apologise for this entry, I doubt anyone will read it, but should they do they will realise the reason for the lack of coherence. This is my fault, I am sorry. I don't know why but I have made a big decision, I feel the need to explore. I have decided to enter the hole, I must do it. With no family alive on Earth when I return, no close friends on board, and only a desire for adventure all arrows point to this conclusion. Perhaps deep down I want to prove that my namesake was right. I don't know I haven't really been thinking straight. I just woke up with the idea.

But I have decided. I will take the escape pod. It has medical supplies and enough glucose for nearly forty years of coma. I doubt I'll need it, I doubt I'll last forty minutes, but should there be some other universe able to be reached from that hidden singularity in the centre, then I should find it. If I do, the supplies will be essential to travel to any planet close by. The navigation systems should home in on an Earth-like planet. I might live again.

I have decided not to tell the crew, they will find out soon enough. But a note of explanation should cover the important facts.

It was all beginning to make sense. That was where he had gone. Into the hole. He wanted to prove Martin wrong. Wanted to find another place, another time.

Now they knew where he was, where he'd vanished to. Only one question remained. How did they get the 'book'. It was Simon who first voiced this question. 'If he did travel through the hole to another place, then he took the book with him. It's been in Jayne's company's possession for two hundred and forty years. Which seems to imply that he travelled back in time and returned to Earth. God knows what harm he could have done to time.' Exasperatedly he added, 'Jesus, what happens if he hurt someone or killed him. You've read the stories. Imagine what danger he could do.'

'Wait, wait, wait' repeated Kate. 'There are more entries to go. Perhaps you should read them before you condemn him.'

Simon was unsure but did eventually agree.
