Chapter One

For as long as I can remember I’ve been friends with Amanda, ok, not as long as I can remember but ever since high school, in fact she had been my very first friend in high school. I mean don’t get me wrong we had lots of other friends, but we were just always around for each other, that’s the way we were. High school was definitely the best years of my life; me and Amanda hung out all the time with 3 other girlfriends, Lisa, Christine and Cassie all the time, talk about fun. But after college, Cassie had married her high school sweetheart, Tony, and we spoke to her often but we hardly ever saw her. As for Christine, her program had forced her to stay another year in school, but we still talked her a lot and she still switched boyfriends every week. And then Lisa, we hadn’t talked or seen her in ages, she had switched crowds our senior year and since then things between her and us had never been the same.

Me and Amanda lived in a condo downtown, but Amanda seriously wanted to move away, far away, like another country, but so far I’ve managed to make her feel so guilty about leaving me that it hadn’t happened yet….

Anyways, on this particular day, we were just bumming around in the apartment reminiscing on our younger days…

“Oh my god, do you remember how obsessed we were with all those boy bands?” Amanda said laughing.

“Yeah, they were so many Backstreet Boys, Five, N Sync, Boyzone, but no one was as bad as you and that total loser from No Authority. What was his name again?”

“Hey! He was cute and his name was Eric.”

“Total loser!!! I mean that hair, what were you thinking? I mean no wonder you don’t have a boyfriend.”

Amanda threw a pillow at me laughing “Hey! Last time I checked you didn’t have one either.”

“That’s totally by choice.”

“Yeah, right.”

Ok, so the truth was I didn’t have a boyfriend. But the truth was I didn’t want one, and I didn’t think Amanda wanted one either, I mean here I was with an image of the perfect guy and every time I met one he turned out to be a jerk, it’s not like I had turned of men completely, it’s just that I was way tired of being hurt. And Amanda, she was waiting for her Prince Charming, she dated a lot but never seriously.

“What ever happened to those guys?”

“I dunno, I heard some of them were like still famous back in Europe. Remember we were always like talking about liking them forever?”

“Man, we were just losers.” We could have gone on about ourselves being losers forever, but the phone rang.

“I got it.” We both yelled and made a mad dash for the phone, I know pretty childish stuff. As usual I got it first.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Caro? It’s Chris. How are you?”

“Chris! Hey, how are you? Long time no chat, huh?”

“Seriously, well that’s why I call I’m downtown right now.”

“You are?? Well, we have to get together.”

“How about the McDonalds in like 10 minutes?”

“You said the magic word, we’re there. See you soon.”

“Bye.”

Amanda was patiently (ok, not so patiently) waiting, trying to figure out where we were going.

“So, where did you assume I was going?”

“McDonalds.”

“Oh great, like we don’t go there enough.”

“Hey, it was Chris’ choice, anyways you ready?”

“Let’s go.”

Me and Amanda never really bothered with clothes, she wore baggy pants and small tops like all the time and I was practically always in track pants, I mean comfortable was the key word here. So, we headed out to MickeeDees, anxious to see Chris.

We got there and quickly spotted Chris, I mean with her long blond hair she’s easy to spot anywhere. We obviously ran to her and hugged each other as if it had been ages since we hadn’t seen her; ok it had actually been like 3 weeks.

So we ordered, and picked a table upstairs. As we ate we obviously gossiped, I mean we haven’t change that much since high school.

“You guys will never guess who I ran into the other day.”

“Who?”

“Yeah, Chris who?”

“Lisa, she was at the mall and we bumped into each other.”

“No way, what did she say?” I was curious to see what she was up to these days, I mean we use to be really close friends.

“Oh, nothing, really just that she was seeing someone and she asked about you guys.”

“I’m coming to the bathroom.” Amanda suddenly announced and quickly got up and left the table.

“What’s with her?” Christine asked surprised by Amanda sudden leaving.

“I don’t really know, I mean she’s always like that when Lisa is mentioned. They were best friend, we both know she took it harder then any of us when Lisa left us hanging.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right.”

Just then Amanda came running back to the table.

“Oh my God, you guys will mot believe – Oh my God- he was right there, oh man I can’t breathe, this is too much.”

“Amanda, calm down, you’re not making any sense.”

“Don’t worry Chris, she’s always like this.”

“No, you guys listen!! He’s here.”

“Who is, Manda, breathe.”

“Brian’s here, I bumped into him on my way on of the bathroom.”

“Brian, Brian who?”

“Yeah, Manda, I’m with Caro, Brian who?”

“Duh, Brian Littrell. He’s here!”

Christine burst out laughing “Brian from the Backstreet Boys? Oh God you have lost it.”

“Yeah, Amanda, I think we reminisced a little too much for your own good.”

“No, really. It was him.”

This time we were both laughing, I mean Amanda was always weird, but this weird?

“Sure, it was Amanda, sure it was.” Chris said in between giggles.

“Fine, don’t take my word for it. Take a look for yourself, he went downstairs.”

“And I bet he’s gonna have mysteriously disappeared, right?”

“C’mom, look over the railing.”

“Chris, are you gonna give credit to this hallucinations?”

“I might as well try.” And so Chris leaned over the railing, and looked around, scanning the tables. When she turned around, the expression on her face was priceless.

“Oh my God, I think she’s right, and he’s not alone either, he’s with Kevin.”

“Okay, so what are you two trying to put me on, did you plan this?”

“No, Caro, I’m serious, take a look. I swear on our friendship.”

“Okay, okay. I’m looking.” And I leaned over the railing, “Holy shit! It’s him, do you really think it’s him? I mean really? Could it be?” I mean, it’s not everyday you see a Backstreet Boys, but they are easy to spot. I mean they had been our obsession for like years.

“Caro slow down, you’re talking even faster then usual.” It’s not like I talk that fast….

We sat back down, trying to decide whether or to approach the guys. Then finally, Christine took action.

“Look, Amanda all through high school, you talked about meeting Brian, well I’m about to do you a big favor.” And Christine got up & walked down the stairs.

“No, Kiki come back where are you going?” This is Kiki for you, all or nothing.

Me & Amanda leaned over the railing to see Christine walk over to the guys, talked to them, write something down, and then the guys got up and left as Chris walked back upstairs.

“Chris, what did you do?” Amanda asked.

“Just gave Brian your phone number, that’s all.”

“Yeah, right. Way to go Kiki.” I said, giving her a high five.

“I can’t believe you did that, he probably thinks it’s your number.”

“Nope, I told him, it was a hot friend of mine named Amanda.”

“As if he’s gonna call.”

“C’mom, Amanda think positive, don’t let the man get you down, and besides Caroline Richardson sounds pretty damn good, huh?” It does, doesn’t it?

The girls started laughing. “I can’t believe we saw them for real, I mean even if they aren’t stars anymore, that’s pretty cool. And they still look good.”

“Doesn’t that make you feel like we’re back in high school?”

“Oh God, don’t go there, please.” I mean it was cool, but enough reliving for a day

“Anyways, as usual I’m still the daredevil here, that’s obvious.”

“I can’t believe you just went up to them like that. That’s guts, Chris. I’m proud.”

“Yeah, well I figure once you guys get them you could hook me up with AJ.”

“Sounds good to me.” And went back to eating and talking (well, ok gossiping.)

After eating we Amanda and I headed back to the apartment and Christine wanted to go spend some time with her family. As soon as we walked in the door, the phone rang.

“You don’t think, do you?” Amanda asked me.

“I don’t know.”

“Well.”

“Well, somebody is gonna have to get it.” I said.

“You get it.”

“Fine, you big baby.” I said as I grabbed the receiver. “Hello?…Oh hi…Now?…Yeah ok…I’ll be there, give me like 20 minutes…Alright, bye.”

“Who was that?”

“Work. They want me to be there when they present a certain case, they want me to learn sometime.”

“Oh, overtime. You must really be making a good impression.”

“I hope so. I’m gonna get changed.”

I work as an intern in a law firm downtown, I love my job, only problem is it’s really weird hours. Amanda gives singing lesson, she has an amazing voice. But of course to her this is only temporary until she gets enough money to leave and go some place else.

“Alright, I’m gone.” I said grabbing my purse. “I don’t know when I’ll be back, probably in like a few hours, if anything beep me, kay?”

“Sure, have fun.”

“Yeah….Hey if Brian calls, get me a date with Kevin ok?” I said laughing,

“For sure.” I heard her say as I headed out the door.

I got home really late, sorting out this case took forever. When I walked in I was surprised to see Amanda still up watching TV.

“What are you still doing up?”

“Nothing.” She said with a big smile. “How was work?”

“Forget work, what’s with that huge grim on your face?”

“Well…”

“Well what?

“Guess who called?”

“Yeah, right.”

“I swear.”

“If Brian had actually called you’d be going crazy, you’d be out of your mind.:”

“ I was the neighbors had to ask me to shut up.”

“You’re kidding right?”

“Nope.”

“Well, what did he say, details.”

“Just that he wanted to know if I wanted to go out Saturday night.”

“Oh my God, what did you say? I mean obviously you said yes, right?”

“Duh, but I also did just what you asked.”

“What?”

“I got you a date with Kevin.”

“No way, you’re full of shit, you didn’t.”

“Did do.”

“When did you stop being so shy?”

“Well, it was now or never, and I couldn’t go with Brian alone, that would of being suicide. So, I asked if Kevin was busy, cause I has an interested friend.”

“Oh my God. I can’t believe you.”

“C’mom, you know you’re happy.”

“Well..Ok I can’t wait. This is so cool.”
