Brotherhood Cathedral? Violent Nuns Vs Swampthing.

What can I say, never played Warzone, Warhammer 40K a few times but Warzone, never. So when Marc asked me to review Warzones’ campaign pack "The Brotherhood Cathedral" I thought why not. I’m a man who likes to expand my horizons and any type of game is worth trying at least once. So here is a review from a beginner to Warzone, on a campaign pack that looks good on the face of it.

Lets start at the beginning. The packaging looks good. I’m a sucker for nuns with guns (uh er missus) so this pack should get a 10 out of 10 before I start. But looking past base desires what else is there. A glossy, but black and white book, two decent looking figures, and a flimsy building that would be a brickies nightmare (but looks cool when assembled). Younger gamers should persist with the pack, as the overall result s worth waiting for.

The campaign rules do justice to a game that is heavily overshadowed by the Games Workshop empire, but Workshop have nothing to match this campaign pack for shear feeling. Let me explain. Games Workshops campaigns are linear in design, battles are fought in a series one after another with no join except a small amount of narrative text. Each army is separate and only at the end of the campaign that thing come together. To put it simply the first battle doesn't affect the second and so on.

However this Warzone campaign pack is different. Each battles outcome affects which scenario is played next, it allows a proper campaign to develop and also the feeling of being involved. Ever played one of those fighting fantasy books? If you win go to 3 if not go to 7 if you get my drift.

The reinforcements rules that come into affect after each battle are wonderfully designed. No longer do you have to buy full units if one trooper falls. Basically what ever troops you have left after the previous battle are added to or reinforced by getting extra points to spend. So if you are very good by the end of the campaign you could have a huge army.

Well what’s the fighting all about? Why are the forces of good and evil trying to kick the living s##t of each other? Well because they always do, its the natural order of things, where would we be if they didn't. Probably down the gin shop. But no, there is a background. The Dark Legion are on the offensive again, in order to bring down the human race they have decided to attack one of its focuses of power and resistance, a Brotherhood Cathedral. This will hopefully be the beginning of the end of the Brotherhood, the only faction that has the capability to unite humanity and repulse the Dark Legion. The Brotherhood though, know that the Dark Legion is coming and are prepared to fight to the death to stop the Legion from desecrating the temple and using it for their own foul deeds. Exciting stuff.

The narrative is well written, giving a feeling of desperation from the good guys and cooly evil intent from the bad guys. I mean who do you play, some wicked looking sister superior or a big guy with a meat cleaver? I cannot recommend this campaign pack enough, with a bit of support for the building, and if you can look past the uncoloured book, then this kicks the ass of any other campaign pack I have ever played. Second Opinion.

Unlike Chris I am not new to Warzone having played the system since it first game out and put many display games on at games shows for a number of stores and companies. I found that the Cathedral was nice to look at and the two miniatures the Brotherhoods Pilgrim and the Dark Legion’s Angel of Mercy both quite nice miniatures if not up to the usual standards of Target. I must agree with Chris on the campaign rules as they are far superior to anything that anyone else (Target included) has come up with as of yet. My biggest gripe as with the other packs in the range from Target is that the building is not pre-cut or scored, and takes a lot of time to cut out and assemble and could cause problems for younger gamers. If a little more was spent on the design then this would truly be the best of its kind on the market. Target please pay attention! John if you read this mate, Pre –cut next time please. Overall though its a really nice addition to Warzone and looks damn fine as a centre piece.

Marc.
