For a long time the only product that White Wolf were famous for was the excellent Ars Magica, the Medieval game of high magic and sorcery. All that changed, as did the face of the roleplaying industry in 1991 when White Wolf launched Vampire the Masquerade the first in its hugely successful range of Storyteller games! Vampire set a new precedence for the rest of the industry to follow and is still one of the best selling roleplaying games of all time. Moving away from the sword and sorcery style of games, Vampire took a long needed adult look at the hobby and addressed themes that other companies where either to timid to try or afraid of doing.

Vampire placed the un-living characters in a much darker world than our own, where politics and deceit are among the order of the day, and where other supernatural creatures roam the Earth, in short a World of Darkness which became the standard for the companies products.

Vampire was an instant hit and won many awards at both Gen Con and Origins and would be followed by a string of other Storyteller games over the following few years, and even had the distinction of have the first ever television program based on a roleplaying system , ‘Kindred the Embraced’.

Using a very simple system based around the D10, the storyteller games had more emphasis on real life and current affairs than most and a lot of political intrigue seems to follow the games where ever they go. Players get to assign attributes, skills, merits and flaws to make their character a cut above the rest. The simple yet highly affective combat system made a lot of other games companies sit up and pay attention, and it was little wonder that the Storyteller system was such a hit. Look below for reviews and synopsis of the base games.

But the World of Darkness (the Storyteller setting for the games!) didn't stop with Vampire! The following year White Wolf released the second in the range, Werewolf the Apocalypse again to rave reviews and over the following years the system grew to allow the players to chose from Mages, Ghosts, and even Fairies! Many of the early prints of the WOD system are now highly sought after and often command high prices.

Earlier this year White Wolf left the supernatural genre and began a new fray into the realms of science fiction gaming with its system Trinity. Trinity is set in the far future and welds expertly all the trappings of the genre, combining fast paced action with cutting edge game play.

Vampire is about to be re-launched in an all new format for the new millennium and looks likely to be at the very top of the heap for a long time yet to come.
