La`au `Eha....Number Four Plant
Kalo or Taro
Colocasia esculenta
Also known as dasheen and kalinga, taro
is considered the staple food of the Hawaiian
polynesian. The roots and leaves are eaten only
after considerable cooking which removes the toxic
calcium oxalate crystals that are in the plant.
Taro is believed to be native to Africa and was used
in first-aid and other medical treatments. Much
lore surrounds this Arum as it is thought to have
given birth to all mankind in Hawaiian genesis stories.
