Naupaka Kuahiwi

Scaevola chamissoniana

From the Goodeniaceae Family comes about a dozen plants found in Hawaii. Many stories surround two lovers who were later embodied in the plants, hence the common name "lover's plant". This species has the toothed leaves and the purplish rays that one doesn't find in the more common mountain or shoreline types. The photos were taken from thick rain-forest in Puna, Hawaii (Big-Island) only a few miles from the still active volcanic vent Pu`u O`o on Kilauea volcano.
