Onions are one of the oldest known cultivated plants and believed native to Western Asia. They do best in Hawaii in the bread-basket community of Kula (Upcountry Maui) between 2000-4000' ASL. Maui is reknown for the so-called "sweet" onion, which has been included in some dessert recipes.
