Former Chicago Pastor succumbs to injuries in Belfast fire. BELFAST, July 31 - The pastors of all the Presbyterian churches here today expressed deep regret at the death last night of Rev. William John McCaughan.
Mr. McCaughan was pastor of the Main Street Church. He was at one time a pastor in Chicago. In a fire in the Hotel Kelvin here on the night of July 26 Mr. McCaughan and his wife were caught on an upper floor. They were badly burned and finally jumped from a window. Mr McCaughan's skull was fractured. His wife suffered severely from the fall, but, it is thought, will recover.

ALEXANDER McCAUGHN, of Lodi, Columbia County, was born in Antrim, Ireland, July, 1822, where his parents, Charles and Sarah (Christie) McCaughn were also born, and where the former died in 1837, age sixty years. After her husband's death, Mrs. McCaughn came in 1841 with her family, to New York. After a short stay in the city, Alexander came with his mother to Delaware County, N.Y., where she died in 1857. The son continued his residence there for fourteen years. In 1855 he removed to West Point, Columbia county, Wis., and two years later changed his residence to Dane county, and settled on the farm now owned by Mrs McCaughn. It consisted originally of one hundred and twenty acres, but Mr. McCaughn subsequently increased it by the purchase of eighty acres more, thus owning at the time of his death, a farm of two hundred acres. The farm was uncultivated at the time of his first occupancy, and it was his energy and industry that all of its improvements are due. The property is operated for stock raising and general farming. Mr. McCaughn was a Republican, but did not care for active participation in political affairs. He and his family were associated with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Lodi. He was twice married, but had no children by his first wife, Margaret Steele, daughter of Robert Steele. She was born in Delaware County, N.Y. and died in 1874, aged fifty years. In 1875, Mr. McCaughan married Mary Steele, daughter of Samuel Steele and granddaughter of Robert Steele, who was born in Iowa county, in 1855. Samuel Steele, who was born in Delaware county, N.Y. in 1824, and his wife, Ruth Farwell, was born in Ashtabula county, Ohio, in 1833. He came to Iowa county, Wis., in 1848, where he married and resided a number of years. He afterward lived for a time in Illinois, later in Minnesota, and finally, in 1871, returned to Wisconsin and settled in Baraboo. His wife died in 1885, but he remained in his home until his death in 1901. He was a farmer by occupation, a Democrat, and later a Prohibitionist in Politics, and both he and his wife were members of the Congregational church in Baraboo. Of their seven children there are still three living. Mrs McCaughn's maternal grandfather, Isaac Farwell, was born in Charleston, Cheshire county, N.H., May 14, 1804, and his wife, Mahala (Daniels) Farwell, was born in Rutland county, VT, Dec. 30, 1801. They married Jan. 10, 1825, at New Fane, Niagara County, N.Y. and came to Rochester, N.Y. They were afterwards among the early settlers of Ashtabula County, Ohio.and later came to Iowa county, Wis., where they both died, Mrs. Farwell in 1873 and her husband in 1883.
Five children were the issue of the marriage of Alexander McCaughn and his second wife, Mary Steele: CHARLES, born May 13, 1876; WILLIAM, born Jan. 21, 1887; ROLLO, born July 17, 1880; EMERY S., born February 1884, HOWARD, born August 2, 1887. Of these, the eldest died in infancy. The others were educated in the common and high school of Lodi, Wis, and William resides at present in that town. Rollo and Emery S. occupy farms in the vicinity of their former home, and the youngest, with his family, lives upon the homestead. Besides the children born into the family, Lura West, daughter of Iola West, a niece of Mrs McCaughn, who was born in Baraboo, February 7, 1883, was adopted when she was two years old, and has made her home with Mrs. McCaughn since that time.

ALEXANDER McCAUGHN, a farmer of Dane Township,was born in County Antrim, Ireland, July 12, 1822, son of Charles and Sarah Christi McCaughn, natives of that county. The father followed the blacksmith's trade during his entire life,a nd his death occured in Ireland in 1837, at the age of sixty years. The mother survived her husband many years, dying in Delaware county, New York, ar or about eighty years. They were parents of five sons and three daughters, of whom our subject is the youngest child.
The latter came to America in the spring of 1841, at the age of nineteen years. He came on the sail vessel Francis D. Paul, and American three master in the cotton trade, and they were six weeks from Liverpool to New York City, having been driven out of their course by a heavy storm of three weeks. Mr. McCaughn immediately joined his brother William in Delaware County, who had come to this country two years previously, and soon found work in the hay fields. He spent fourteen years in that county, and thirteen years of that time was employed by the same man, formerly a sailor. He succeeded in saving $1,000 from his monthly earnings, but afterwards lost $200. In the fall of 1855, he purchased 120 acres of land in West Point Township, Columbia county, Wis., for which he paid $800.. Two years afterwards, he sold that place for $1,700. to be paid for in wheat at seventy-five cents per bushel, and at the rate of $2.00 to $2.75 per bushel. After selling his land, Mr. McCaughan immediately came to this place and he bought 120 acres of his sister -in- law, for which he paid $2,000. He bought the place mostly for its timberland but when he got there, most of the timber had been stolen. He was obligated to go into debt, paying seven per cent interest. The first year, he had to borrow money to pay the interest, paying ten per cent on the latter. Our subject now owns 200 acres of fine land, but for the past year, he was rented his entire place. When he came to this state there were no regular laid roads, and his dwelling was a small frame cabin. He erected his present frame house in 1861, at the beginning of the late war. Although Mr. McCaughn took no part in that struggle, he aided materially with his means. Politically, he affiliated with the Republican party.
In 1856, our subject was united in marriage with Margaret Steele, a native of Delaware County, New York, and a daughter of Robert Steele, a farmer by occupation. She departed this life in 1874, at the age of fifty years, and three years afterwards Mr. McCaughn married Miss Mahala Steele, a native of Baraboo, and the daughter of Samuel Steele who was born in Delaware County, New York. The latter was a brother of Mr. McCaughn's first wife. To this union has been five sons: CHARLES, deceased in infancy; WILLIAM A., aged fourteen years; ROLLO, age twelve years; EMERY, nine years; and HOWARD, five years.

In l870, William James McCahan (1) founded the W. J. McCAHAN and Company of Philadelphia, a sugar refinery and dealer in molasses and syrups which through the years has become a very lucitive business. The child of William James (1) and Sarah was (there could have been more):

Decendants of this line do not know for sure who their immigrant ancestor was., or which English version of the spelling he used. From this report, it looks as if John McKoin was the immigrant since his son was born in Kentuckly. They also do not know when they started using the McKoin spelling of the name. I suspect that it was after they got to America for that is an American way of spelling the name, as is McCoin, McConn and McCann. For the sake of this report, I will say thar John McKoin, the son of Archibald, is the immigrant.
